I deleted the old ones on accident so I decided to start over, and do it a little different.
Our New Life
I entered our small home . It was small in size but we only really used it for sleeping and eating. Most of the time we were out working. Or in my case getting away from town. My sister and I are known as the “Witch Twins”. Because my Mother and Father only wanted one of us; Jane. I was an outcast. But, she is my best friend and would never turn against me in any way. We were always together. She is what has kept me stable all these years.
I entered the main room to be greeted with a smack to the face. My hands went to my face trying to suppress the stinging that was given to me by my Father. “Boy! You have kept us waiting! Go into the field and get the crops!” My father yelled. My Father is a large man. He was thick with muscles and has anger lines covering his face. His piercing blue eyes glared at me from under his curly brown hair.
“You heard your Father, Go on!” My Mother interjected from the kitchen. I sighed and walked out the door rolling my eyes as I step out.
“What up! I’m coming too!” I didn’t have to even turn around for me to know that it was my sister; Jane. I turned around and smiled. We walked to the fields together hand in hand. “So, what did you do today?” she asked me, her eyes searching mine.
“Same old, Same old, went into the woods to practice my voodoo magic!” I said sarcastically. We both laughed and continued on to the fields chatting.
As we were walking back with fresh crop in our baskets my sister turned to me, “Do you think we could run away?” I kept my poker face. She often talks about us running away to a different town and starting over. To get away from neighbors with their sideways glances and the whispering and the jeering. Most of all our parents who treated us cruelly. I smiled.
“ I would go anywhere. Just as long as your by my side. I would do anything to protect you.” I smiled at her knowing my words were true. We rounded the bend and stopped right where we stood. In front of our house was an angry mob. Our eyes widened in fear.
“There they are!”
“ The witches!”
I turned on my heel instantly grabbing my sisters arm and half pulling her half dragging her away from the mob and trying to escape into the forest. Jane pulled up her dress and ran with me. Hand in hand running away from certain death.
I feel her hand drop. I stop and look back. She was on the ground, she had tripped over a log. I ran back getting her up but, her dress was stuck. I ripped it from the log and pulled her onto my back. She was petite enough for me to run with for a little while but not for long. felt my legs burning, My lungs aching, My heart pounding.
Just then, I was pulled from behind. We both feel to the ground. We were surrounded by the mob. I looked around for any escape. It was useless we were trapped.
I looked to my sister. Her eyes were huge and scared she was breathing frantically and looking for a way out. I grabbed her hand. She looked at me and I saw her acceptance. Together we were dragged back to the town.
We were tied to poles in the center of town. There a crowd surrounded us. I looked through the faces. Faces that I have known since I was a baby looking at me in disgust. I wasn’t surprised. I looked to Jane and gave her a little nod. She did a half hearted smile then looked back to the crowd.
“Move aside!” Said a large man whom held a torch. My eyes widened. I struggled with my ropes trying to get free, but, it was useless there was no escaping this. I looked into the crowd again and saw my parents.
“ Help us!” I yelled to them. My mother looked down in shame, my Father just glared at us.
The large man came to me first with a group. Together they drenched me in some liquid that was foreign to me. Another group did the same to my sister. I could start to hear her scream. “ Jane! Jane, look at me! Look at me, Jane!” I yelled at her. She looked to me scared. I nodded. “ It’s ok Jane. I’ll get us out of this” I lied. She calmed a little. “Just look at me Jane. Nothing else is here.” I said with a smile.
I comforted my sister. Showing her smiled and telling her I would get us out of this. I would so anything just to calm her down. I could hear in the background a man talking and the crowd cheering. That was in a different part of my mind, a part I didn’t want to recognize. All that mattered was Jane.
The man came at me throwing his torch in the pile of wood at my feet. I could feel the flames lap at me clothes. The heat burned my skin. Distantly I hear screaming. It took my a second to realize it was mine. I looked at Jane she was screaming with me. Her eyes widened in horror. I looked at her group coming towards her with their torch. It fell into her pile in slow motion then took flame. I screamed. Not just for my pain but for my sisters. I promised I would protect her. I promised I would do anything to save her…. I failed.
