I could already infer that he had been through something of the sort, from his behavior (not only that but... no offense, but in the beginning, Alois was shown naked, bruised, and getting up from a bed in which an elderly man had been lying next to him, and he was talking about being "enveloped in darkness". Again, not to be rude, but we were given a little more than simple hints). Honestly, I've found him to be an interesting, complex character from the start, and despite some of his considerably cruel actions, I could not help but sympathize with him.
He actually became my favorite character after the first few seconds of his introduction. I could tell the kind of character he would be and, well, I always love the tragic characters. ^ ^
