Although he went about them the wrong way entirely and went to extents that I don't particularly agree with, he had good, strong morals and stuck by them until the end. He became power hungry and fairly evil, yes, but that was the power of the Death Note and the fearless power that the insanity of the Death Note gave him playing with his life.
He had good intent and went about them strongly, even if it was wrong. He was a strong and intelligent character all the way through.
