One of the most possible reasons why Ugly Betty is loved by viewers is because of the fact that the show tells us that we are capable of anything for as long as we believe in ourselves. That aside, the show also serves a great advocacy against stereotypes -something most of the viewers could possibly relate to, whether it happened to them or not.
Stereotyping is the less hurtful term for 'discrimination' and 'being prejudiced', but it leads to the same frame of mind. It goes like this: if you're prejudice, you discriminate, which means you victimize other people because of your stereotyping and you do this because you are narrow-minded.
Now did I post this article because I'm cheering for Betty despite her being 'ugly' as the show supposedly portrays her?
NO.
Believe me, I think everyone knows about how the plot of the show goes. I wrote this article simply to show all the anti-Detty people out there that say that Betty is too good for Daniel, fall under the category of the 'narrow-minded' people I'm talking about.
I know no one probably cares of my sentiments, but I am so sick of people saying that Betty and Daniel ending up together will destroy the essence of the show.
Look here, bozos. The mere fact that you think that Daniel is not 'good enough' for Betty is YOU STEREOTYPING him. You box Daniel's character (and probably everyone else in the real world who tries to change and fails at it, but tries again anyway)into something that society has classified him into, that he's the selfish playboy who'd never change. Sure, Daniel could be a jerk now and then, but hey, no one's perfect. Daniel should not be stereotyped as much as everyone claims Betty should not be either.
And who should be good enough for Betty? Your stereotyped version of the 'good boy next door'? The thing is, all is fair in love and war. It's either your hurt someone or you don't.
Instead, we should believe in Daniel like Betty believes in him. Betty's love for him, after all, is a tough kind of love. This is where her heart shines out, that she, out of everyone else, believes in him the most -the same way every viewer believes in Betty, that she will one day end at the top of the chain.
If you don't believe in Detty, don't give me the lame excuse you just find the production wonderful why you're watching the show. If you claim that you watch Ugly Betty because you truly understand it and the message it conveys, I'm not saying you should be a Detty fan, but don't ever suggest that you would find it preposterous to have Detty end up together.
Duh. Betty loves Daniel (as he does her), so why can't you?
