As you know, on the wall, I said that BTR was one of the best shows to come on Nick in a long time and is a show that remains good and has even gotten better over time. But in this article, I think I should take the time to explain why.
First, let's start with the characters.
We have our main characters, James, Carlos, Logan, and Kendall.
Kendall is the leader of the group. He's a down-to-earth kinda guy and is the less shallow of the group. He's the guy who usually gives pep talks and comes up with the ideas.
Logan is the brains of the group. He serves as the voice of reason and usually comes up with ways for him and the guys to get out of tight spots.
James is the pretty boy of the group. He's the ladies man. He's full of himself at times and can be egotistical, but overall does have a good heart.
Carlos is the wild child of the group. He loves corndogs and wearing a hockey helmet, is good hearted, loyal and friendly.
BTR work off of each other perfectly. You wouldn't expect a group of pretty boys in a band to be so comical, but they are. These guys are super funny. Their gags, their jokes, their antics and how their personalities clash off of each other is brilliant and makes for some comical, slapstick moments.
Now onto the manager of BTR, Gustavo Rocque. This guy is arguably one of the best band manager characters of all time. He's loud, he's abnoxious and at times, you can understand why he's like this. This is a guy who is trying to take four nobodies and make them into stars and in the beginning, that's what he does. And it doesn't help that his boss, Griffin (whom I'll get to in a moment) is constantly pressuring him. But as the series progressed and BTR becomes more famous, he's more patient towards them and while the guys still think of him as loud, they also begin to think of him as more than just a manager and possibly a friend. I like how he refers to the guys as 'dogs,' and how you can never tell when he's gonna just explode and scream to the top of his lungs. Plus, his facial expressions are hilarious.
Kendall's Mom is OK. She's funny at times and can be aggressive. She's the typical nice mother and I do like her relationship with Katie, at times like a big and little sister thing.
On the subject of Katie, she is great. I like how such a little kid has so much knowledge of stock investments and money and is so clever and at times, she's more smart then most of the grownups.
Now onto Griffin. Griffin is weird, he's bizarre and his methods for testing BTR are equally as weird. Not much to take on his characters except for him being weird.
But I'm digressing. I should be talking about what makes this show good. With that being said, let's talk about another great character, Gustavo's assistant, Kelly.
Kelly is great. She stands as a foil to Gustavo's temper tantrums and overbearingness. She's there to calm him down when he's at his most stressful and calls him out on his true feelings about the boys. There are times when she doesn't agree with him, but there are times when she does and that one of the things that makes her great. She realizes that there are times when Gustavo needs to be assertive. And the way she and Gustavo work off of each other is great too. Sometimes, they're like a married couple, sometimes they argue, sometimes they agree and they make some great comical moments.
The supporting characters are great too.
First we have Budha Bob who is the janitor of the Palm Woods who is very funny and helps the guys out with a lot of their problems.
In season 1, there was this kid named Tyler who doesn't want to be an actor and is constantly hiding from his star crazed mother.
There's Guitar Dude (who hasn't been seen for a while) who plays guitar.
We have the Jennifers who like to walk in slow motion, have their own theme music, and serve somewhat as Carlos' love interests.
Then we have Mr. Bitters, the hotel manager. He serves as both a friend and foe for BTR and mostly Katie. Bitters and Katie's rivalry is pretty good and I like how their relationship was explored a bit more in the episode, "Big Time Christmas." Bitters does have his moments of character development and is a pretty funny character and his evil laugh is not bad either. Overall, I enjoy him pretty well.
Now let's talk about the three main girls of the series, starting with Kendall's sweetheart, Jo. I admit that when I first saw Jo, I thought she was gonna be one of those typical love interests with no real character, but in her debut episode, I was proven wrong. She's not the typical love interest; she's comical, clever, witty, sarcastic, and her relationship with Kendall is not all lovey-dovey. She's is one of the best female characters I've ever seen in a Nickcom.
Next, there's Camille, Logan's main squeeze. She is another gem in this series. She starts off as an eccentric method actress with the hots for Logan. As the series progressed, her and Logan's relationship develops greatly. I also love how she tackles Logan and slaps him, but out of love, her own way of expressing affection.
Finally, there's newcomer, Lucy Stone, a rocker girl. She's a great character. She's cute, sarcastic, funny and I liked how a relationship was starting to develop between her and Kendall and I kinda wish they had a chance to have a real relationship before Jo just suddenly came back.
With the characters out of the way, it's time to talk about what I believe is the most important factor for a show: the episodes and the theming of them.
One of the main reasons that Big Time Rush has remained good is the episodes. In terms of comedy and theming, the episodes are done really well.
One of the reasons that iCarly and Victorious started sucking is that the episodes were not really that good or fit the theme of the show. Big time Rush's episodes, however have remained funny and good and have mostly stuck to the plot of the show. This is a show about four guys who move to L.A. to become a band and exploring their journey to becoming a band and dealing with the issues to becoming a band. The episode follow that really well.
In the first season, the episodes follow the guys' becoming a band and starting out. The first episode is about them becoming a band and the others episodes are about them going through the ups and down of trying to become a band.
In the next season, they've become a bit famous and most of the episodes involves them dealing their new found popularity as well as Kendall's relationship with Jo and Logan's relationship with Camille.
In the next season, the guys have finished their tour and have reached superstardom and now they deal with being big time celebrities.
This season is great as well with greatly themed episodes that stay true to the formula that has made Big time Rush so awesome.
Overall, Big Time Rush is an incredible show with great episodes, memorable characters, and great comedy. It captures the spirit of the original 90's Nick shows like Rugrats, Doug, and Ren and Stimpy. It has remained a good show because it has stuck to what has made it great in the first place. The stories haven't changed, the characters haven't changed, the comedy, nothing has changed at all and that is a good thing. Nothing needs to be changed in this series unlike iCarly and Victorious who have changed most of their characters and stories. With how series has gone in the nearly five years it's been on the air, I hope there will be more seasons to come, big time!
