Joffrey is the eldest of Queen Cersei Lannister's children and bastard heir to King Robert Baratheon. He is described as a strong-willed child with a vicious temper and an unchecked sadistic streak. Like his siblings, he is the son of Cersei's brother Jaime, but he is unaware of this and believes he is Robert's son. Robert never questioned Joffrey's parentage, but he was never fond of Joffrey and often ignored him. In A Game of Thrones, Joffrey is betrothed to Sansa Stark. After Robert's death, he is crowned king. He takes as his personal coat of arms the Baratheon black-and-gold crowned stag and the Lannister red-and-gold lion combatant. Shortly after, he refuses to exile Eddard Stark as Sansa and Cersei ask. Instead, he orders Eddard publicly beheaded. Joffrey rules with cruelty and caprice, often ignoring his advisors, including his own mother. This behavior is often attributed to Cersei's and Robert's parenting. He frequently orders his Kingsguard to beat Sansa and once shot several refugees with a crossbow when they begged for bread at the castle gates. His cruelty makes him unpopular, and he is nearly killed in a riot.
