Remember tonight, for it is the beginning of always. A promise. Like a reward for persisting through life so long; alone. The belief in each other and the possibility of love. A decision, to ignore or simply rise above the pain of the past. The covenant, which at once binds two souls and yet severs prior ties. The celebration, of the chance… for two will always be stronger than one. Like a team, braced against the tempest’s of the world. And love... will always be the guiding force in our lives. For tonight is mere formality, only an announcement to the world for feelings long held. Promises made long ago -- in the sacred space of our hearts. –Lucas Scott

From the speech he prepared for Keith and Jule’s wedding, shared only between Brucas; in a moment so profound that it still has precedence even today, the stage for the reality of Brucas was set. I distinctly remember Lucas explaining to Brooke the reason why weddings are so great…“two people come together, and even if it is just for one night they make us believe in love again.” Those two people that day were not Keith and Jules, nor Lucas and Peyton, but Brooke and Lucas…and in the sacred space of their hearts, one in the same, their belief in each other, and in the possibility of love, was expressed so beautifully that as a viewer you couldn’t help but fall in love right along with them. Fast-forward to now, in times such as these, where morale is suffering… today, “believing in the possibility even when life has given you every reason not to believe,” seems a foreign concept. Therefore, I give to you words of inspiration and wisdom… built upon decades, even centuries, of lovers… these expressions define the essence of a truly epic love and remind us why the journey of Brooke & Lucas, and their love for each other, is truly timeless…

We need not think alike to love alike. – Francis David

Brooke and Lucas are in so many ways opposites. They do not share the same mind, therefore they may not think, or act, alike. They do, however, share the same heart and therefore love alike. Because of this they are not so opposite after all. They both save people…they both save each other…that is sacrifice…and that is love in its most genuine state.

One of the attributes of love, like art, is to bring harmony and order out of chaos, to introduce meaning and affect where before there was none, to give rhythmic variations, highs and lows, to a landscape that was previously flat. – Molly Haskell

Peyton and Lucas share many common traits; one being a talent for art. Her art originally inspired Lucas to pursue playing basketball for the Ravens, subsequently colliding the worlds’ of Lucas, Peyton and Brooke. In season one we find all three characters essentially in chaos, for one reason or another. Before Lucas, Brooke had never given a rat’s ass about anyone. Her life had consisted of monotonous partying, sex and money. Lucas brought to her a sense of greater meaning. Though tumultuous at times their relationship provided a much needed, previously non-existent element of fun to Lucas’s life. IMO Leyton’s affair in S1 is a fraud, in terms of both love and art. Love does not flourish in secrecy, and deceit only brings further chaos. It isn’t until well into the second season where we find a sense of balance or order emerging. Thus, season 2 is paramount for many reasons. Most of all we experience the harmony reached between the unions of Brooke and Lucas and Peyton and Jake. It is at this point when Lucas uncovered how foolish he had been to have ever believed he was truly “in love” with Peyton. He realized he had been denying his true feelings…that Brooke was a part of his history… that he needed to be with her…that he couldn’t wait any longer because she was slipping away…that a year prior he barely even knew her, but now he couldn’t imagine life without her…that he wasn’t ready to lose her… and most importantly, if he ever got a second chance, he’d never let her go again.

Love, like truth and beauty, is concrete. Love is not fundamentally a sweet feeling; not, at heart, a matter of sentiment, attachment, or being "drawn toward." Love is active, effective, and a matter of making a reciprocal and mutually beneficial relation. – Carter Heyward

Aside from the fruitless efforts, of creator Mark Schwann, to portray LP as the epic love of OTH, this depiction was only a surmise, based on limited evidence, to the greater story of Brucas. BL proves to possess the qualities of love described above, while LP fits the definition of what it is NOT to be so perfectly that a picture of them could be displayed next to it in a dictionary! To expand, as distinctly pointed out: love is not an underlying feeling, distinct from the action that it brings about, nor an opinion prevailing among a group of people. Hmm…who does that sound like? I don’t even think I have to say it. In retrospect, the relationship of Leyton has, on many occasions been compared to that of an ideal, much like a sentiment, even by its heroine herself, Peyton (to Haley in S5: loving the idea of she and Lucas). Furthermore, it is mentioned that love must go beyond the need for a basic level of happiness, attachment to or emotional bond, as well as the notion of being “drawn toward.” Finally, both lovers must share a common regard for the benefit of their partner and the relationship at hand. In other words the existence of the couple must produce a benefit to both. I have stressed before my belief that Peyton and Lucas are “drawn together” based on an inherent flaw in their emotional capacity; one that attributes their relationship, or togetherness, with a false sense of happiness, when in actuality it is a debilitating fear of being alone. Simply said…Brucas complete each other and bring out the best in the other, while Leyton do the exact opposite.

Infantile love follows the principle, “I love because I am loved.” Mature love follows the principle, “I am loved because I love.” Immature love says, “I love you because I need you.” Mature love says, ‘” need you because I love you.” – Erich Fromm

Lucas and Peyton’s issues of abandonment, stemming from childhood, bind them together and elicit an unhealthy response, much like what is described above as infantile, immature love. They use each other, and their relationship as a crutch to ignore individual holes in their heart. Thus, their love is based on need. Though Brooke too has experienced emotional stressors, commonly associated with her mother’s lack of involvement in her life, I feel she has matured more than any character on the show, much in part to her relationship with Lucas, both during and after. As for Brooke’s involvement in Lucas’s life, the examples are immeasurable. Likewise, Brucas have been a constant source of strength for one another. In love, we are vulnerable, and Brooke doesn’t like anyone to see her like that. Fortunately, that’s how Lucas always sees her, that and her beauty. Those two have been through a lot together, both good and bad, but nonetheless they made it through because they had each other and most of all they never ceased to love one another (S5, I love you’s). As so, we realize that Brooke and Lucas’s love is unconditional and therefore, mature.

The love we give away is the only love we keep. –Elbert Hubbard

From Pascal we know that, “the heart has its reasons which reason knows not of.” Yet, I have always believed that “everything happens for a reason.” Sacrifice is the ultimate expression of love. There by, in her great sacrifice, letting Lucas go, I must believe that it is for a larger purpose that he too understands.

Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime…therefore, we are saved by hope. Nothing true, or beautiful, or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history… therefore, we are saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone….therefore, we are saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own…therefore, we are saved by the final form of love, which is forgiveness. –Reinhold Niebuhr

The love Brucas share, and the love in which we share for Brucas, is one that has shown the world hope, faith and forgiveness in its truest sense. Their love surpassed the usual and ordinary, thus by definition, Brucas is epic. Lucas Scott was, and still is, the guy for Brooke Davis; the one guy she might have lost it all for. And Brooke Davis was and still is the ONE for him; the one person on the planet that’s right for him. One of these nights they’re both gonna realize it; they are each other’s destiny… you’ll see.

It was more than just a comet, because of what it brought to his life. Direction. Beauty. Meaning. There were many who didn't understand, and sometimes he walked among them, but even in his darkest hours he knew in his heart that someday it would return to him. And his world would be whole again. His belief in God, and love, and art, would be reawakened in his heart. – Lucas Scott.

Listen to how closely his words parallel with his feelings for Brooke throughout the series…how similar it seems to the speech he would have made at Keith’s wedding. Though he walks among them, in darkness, at this moment, a promise was made, in the sacred space of their hearts, along with his and her belief in love …and it remains. For that reason I know that my beloved Brucas will find their way back in the end, as those who are meant to be always do. You know, there was once a time, not long ago, when she was the biggest part of his world… when she returns to him that world will be whole again…and while we may never witness this journey personally, we mustn’t lose our faith that “someday” will arrive. I know I won’t…so join me and go down with this ship!
