Castiel Question

Real strange question, I know, but yet...

So I've looked up the name Castiel, because I was curious where they got all the names from (uriEL, castiEL, gabriEL, etc.) So I found out that Castiel means; My cover is God.

What do they mean with; "my cover is God"?
Does the "cover" means like shield, a blanket, or what? I'm really curious so... ah well thanks anyways :)

Well Castiel is the Angel of Thursday, in much lore, but never specifically mentioned in the Bible, but as such I would assume it means my shield, my protector or something along the lines of that sort of thing.

And Gabriel is widely accepted as an Arch Angel that is well known in the Bible (he led the shepherds to Mary/Joseph and the baby Jesus). While the only angel that is directly stated to be an Arch Angel is Michael, many people choose to believe because of the importance of the tasks given to him that he held that high position as well...anyway I'm pretty sure that was the purpose of including him.

Raphael is also speculated to be an Arch Angel, mostly in Catholic lore because of the Book of Tobit, and in fact oddly enough Uriel is an Arch Angel in many Catholic versions as well because of the Book of Enoch (like Enochian)...so that's interesting that they chose not to make him one.

Anyway, that is probably way more than you even wanted of an answer, but I thought it worth mentioning.

um interesting but idk. i really don't think Cas is God.
Because he said he was not and why would he be so determined to find himself??

That's true. I saw Castiel's name was blue on wikipedia so I clicked it and Castiel turns out to be a Thursday angel in the occult lore or something like that! :)

Wow learn something new everyday! ha! So (this may be a dumb question) is he a real angel or is he just made up for Supernatural?

I think Misha's Castiel is based on the real Castiel :)

I think they chose a really obscure angel name so that they could make him their own character without stepping on too much lore.

The angel Castiel is actually never mentioned in the Bible. But Gabriel does mean messanger of God, which is why he was chosen to relay the message of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. I didn't know that Castiel also means angel of solitude and tears, that's interesting.

castiel is the guardian of thursday, in occult lore, but cassiel is one of the guardians of saturday, along with machatan, and uriel. he is the angel of solitudes and tears, he is one of the rulers of saturn, and is a ruling prince of the seventh heaven, hes also one of the princes of the order of powers, some know him as the angel of temperance, hes known as cassiel mocoton, and his picture is of a bearded jinn, riding a dragon. he is NOT an arch angel as some think, nether is catsiel, the differences i found were mostly in the spelling of the name and the day they guard, but alot of people think their the same angel but their not, cassiel is a fairly well known angel, while castiel is known more from what people have heard on supernaturel ;). hope this helps alittle, info was found in "a dictionary of angels" by gustav davidson
