I wait impatiently on the neon green couch in the middle of the luxurious living room that belongs to the Capitol. The Capitol pleases me but only for a second. I forget that the Hunger Games is just a way of killing us. A crazy scam that is planning to murder us in some form or fashion.
Tonight, I’m wearing a short orange dress that goes down to my thighs. My brown hair is in a messy-yet-casual ponytail. I come from District 2 which provides the masonry for Panem. We are as loyal as those kiss-up tributes of District 1, which is a pain since we are the District after them in the interview.
It’s important to be able to look good at your interview because then you win over the generous sponsors. They will help give us supplies in order to survive the Hunger Games.
“Clove? What are you doing? We have to go to our interview.” My partner and former friend Cato states as he enters the living room.
I admire his steel gray tuxedo and purple tie. Surprisingly, it matches his personality very well. The way he always wants to beat someone up. But when Cato’s around me, it’s like he’s a whole other person. He’s… kinder. Cato treats me like a princess but he doesn’t act all in love with me because of District 12. Peeta and Katniss. They took our spotlight.
I didn’t plan on falling in love with Cato. I met him when I was at the Reaping. Peacekeepers were drawing blood out of me by pricking my index finger with a needle with sharp teeth and Cato was behind me.
When he and I were chosen as tributes for District 2, an idea went through my head. We could become allies so then we wouldn’t be able to kill each other in the end.
On the train with our mentor, Cadence, we made small talk and got to know each other a little better. At first, Cato didn’t want to speak to me. But I got him to get his mouth open.
It was the night of the opening ceremony that our relationship grew stronger. My stylist, Gavin, suggested that he would take a picture of us just so he could remember us both in case we die. Sure, why not? I said to him. Gavin told us to kiss. I was frozen. My heart stopped and I swear Cato almost fainted. I’m very short, almost a foot shorter than Cato. But we accepted the fact that height wouldn’t matter in a silly picture that Gavin would spill to the tabloids.
That kiss. His soft lips. Somehow, I felt something when we kissed for the first time. It wasn’t hatred or regret. It was… love. I was unsure if Cato felt the same about me but he confessed right after we ate dinner alone. Gavin was going out to fetch our mentor Cadence who was probably looking for new shoes to match her perfect blueberry smile. To think that she won the Hunger Games.
Cato and I share a quick kiss before we flee the living room and head for the waiting room for our interview.
A/N: This was a fanfiction project for my Language Arts class. ^^
