Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Question

Do you find people automatically think the original movie is better than this one?

I've had quite a few discussions with mainly older people about whether this movie is better than the original. They seem to like the original better which just gets up my goat. It seems like they've known it for so long they're not willing to think a later adaptation is better. Roald Dahl himself hated the original movie and sure it's got some good songs and it's quite decent but I don't think you could go past Johnny Depp's performance and Tim Burton's direction.

I get the feeling a lot of people compare Johnny Depp with Gene Wilder and conclude that Johnny Depp is nothing like Gene and therefore he's creepy and annoying. Nooo!

I understand that older people would prefer the older because it was what they were used to. However, this new one is actually much more like the book and to me its more enjoyable and I have seen both!!!

ive had that problem too. i have read the book before so when i see the old version and the new version, u know that tim burton's version is actually the closest to the book. for example, the songs in the 2005 movie were written by Roald Dahl himself(from the book)compared to that annoying oompa-loompa song sung over so many times. and both willy wonkas r different. the two actors, i guess, had a different vision 4 the character.

Well It's hard for me to say since I grow up always watched Willy Wonka and The chocolate Facory when I was younger. Then the new one came out and I found it funny and stupid but its more based on the book. In my opinion I have to say the old one has a better Wonka he is not as creepy but the new one is more like the book except the ending sucked...did he have to see his dad?

It drives me crazy when people say they hate this movie because the original is better. The characters and a good chunk of the story are TOTALLY different, and it kind of feels like they're saying Cinderella is a bad movie because Snow White came first. I think they're both fantastic in their own way, and this arguing over what's better is really kind of ridiculous

Well, one's preference can be distinctly justified; either because people grew up watching the first one and are clearly blinded by nostalgia, or they might not have liked Dahl's tale at the first place. I personally prefer the adaption film. It's more faithful to the original source and the acting was definitely a lot more convincing, not to mention the fact that the film does look cinematic with the conspicuous, vivid visuals it gives. I personally also visualized Willy as how he was portrayed in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory when I first read the book, so I guess the adaptation film give more justice than the first one.
