“It’s gotta be so strange for this guy. He was so in love with Katherine for so many years, working off the naivety of a 23-year-old man.

To be in love with this woman who really broke your heart, and then all of a sudden to find a woman who is identical in every way, shape, and form, who is 160 years his junior,” Ian said.

“What I love about [their relationship this season] is that it’s something the audience has really been wanting to see for a long time. But bear in mind that this is The Vampire Diaries, so people being happy for long doesn’t exist.”

"Damon knelt down, and I rushed toward his side. Katherine was lying on her back, ropes binding her arms and legs. The ropes must have been covered with vervain, because there were terrible burns on the patches of skin that touched the twine. A leather mask covered her face, and her hair was matted with dried blood.

I stood back, not wanting to touch her or even look at her, as Damon set to work untying the muzzle. Once she was free, I couldn’t help but notice her teeth, her fangs, her true nature, obvious in a way I’d never seen before. But Damon was gazing at her as if in a trance. He gently brushed the hair off her face and slowly leaned in to kiss her lips.

“Thank you,” said Katherine simply. That was it. And watching them, the way Katherine’s fingers stroked Damon’s hair, the way Damon cried into her collarbone, I knew that this was true love."

Edward and Bella. He's a brooding predator, who can't help but love his prey
I've often wondered why Damon and Katherine are contested so greatly. I mean, it is without a doubt the most romantic love story of the show. I wont go so far as to tell their story. We all know it by now. I'm no closer to coming up with an answer as to why everybody hates Datherine, but I have come up with an idea. Perhaps it can all be summed up in one word: Katherine. (If you're interested in some of the tropes I mention in the article, I have included links in the headings of each paragraph.)

THE BYRONIC HERO

link

Damon is the ideal hero that women fantasize about. He, along with many many other males (Stefan included) epitomise the trope of the Byronic hero. A Byronic hero is a dark, tortured male character who is tormented by a tragic flaw of some kind, or a past traumatic event that haunts him even today. He is usually intelligent, passionate, a social outcast, ridiculously good looking, socially dominant/imposing, and cannot be put in the category of either good or bad. He most commonly has everything a man could...

Why do I like Damon & Katherine even after all she put him through? No, not because they are 'hot", which seems to the reason that many people tend to pair them up. I always see a constant drag down of DK by the DE's (I am just going by what I have seen)because Katherine has hurt him. Yes, she has, but how many times has Elena done that? Second chances, it's all about second chances. About undoing what you did wrong the first time. Katherine is manipulative. Yes, but what about Elena? She's been playing "innocent" and been stringing along both the brothers but no one says anything to her. -- Datherine -- Because there is so much left unspoken and so many lies. Katherine isn't a person that can be revealed just from the surface, she is like an onion that needs to be peeled, layer by layer to unveil the truth. She is an enigma. The flashbacks -- she COMPELLED AND FED from Stefan. The first night the spent together she fed on him so there is no way she could have possibly slept with him. With Damon, she made love to him, she taught him everything about Vampires, she left him with a /choice/. Damon and Katherine are the real love story, here. The differences in the two...

My preference for DK over DE has astounded many a fan. Which is puzzling to me as for me, its only natural to want to see Damon with the woman he's loved absolutely and beyond reason for 145 years. Its also natural to want to see the same woman, who is damaged beyond repair by her past to finally have the courage to let herself love the man she is (in my opinion) meant to be with. Damon and Katherine share so many blatant similarities that one cannot help but wonder about the writer's intentions:

In their human lives, they were both heavily constricted in a society that disapproved of them. Damon, in his human life was "sweet and polite". He seemed to be a very passionate young man, who loved deeply, impulsively and wholeheartedly. He acted without considering the consequences of his actions (leaving the confederacy), thus earning the scorn of his father, and undoubtedly, the entire town. Damon's father was the source of his anguish, comparing him to Stefan and generally making him feel inferior. His openness to Katherine's evil nature was a very unusual one for such a sweet and innocent man. He helped her commit murder and even wanted to learn the ways of a vampire, so...

A ship, to be romantic needs to be a lot of other things too:

MUTUAL, SELFLESS , REAL, PURE, EXTREME, EXCITING.

Damon/Katherine is all of this.

First of all the 1800 scenario helps a lot, along with Damon’s rebel soul, Katherine’s past and above all her vampire “situation”.

This won’t be pretty for Steferine shippers, but Stefan/Katherine has no bases to be a ralationship like DK

Their bases are: SELFISH REASONS: Stefan wanted her just because of her laugh and olive skin and above all because he knew NOTHING about her, when he saw HER for what she truly was ,he was DISGUSTED and all he does since 1864 is judge her.. All the time they spent together Stefan was compelled. Proof is that HE BETRAYED HER and then helped her just because of Damon. He was killed for the love of his brother (as always) not for his love for Katherine, instead with Damon IT WAS ALWAYS KATHERINE. I believe Stefan wanted to win Katherine because he felt inferior to Damon at that point, even if Damon at the same time was jealous of him, because he was the good one, THE LOVED ONE. Truth is that Katherine brought out Stefan his...

Damon: Katherine!
It seems to be common knowledge that Damon is over Katherine, but a perfect example of Damon still caring about Katherine is 2x17 (Damon being visibly upset over the possibility of Katherine’s death).

Since we all know Damon knows better than to let Katherine know a weakness or wallow in whatever he might feel, what really makes Damon over Katherine? What makes Damon’s hard-found distance anything more than an act?

The tomb scene? Well, yes — “Death would have been too kind” and all that jazz. However, when pushed, Damon has never killed Katherine, and I think that says a lot more than an eternity of misery, ect that Damon tends to use on people when he’s hurt. Someone could actually take that as a way of Damon not completely letting go.

ALSO — Damon gave Katherine vervain, when he knows she’s an unreliable ally (and would more than likey not care if she “owed him”), so why, if he doesn’t care at all?

While the idea that Damon still loves Katherine remains only a slight possibility in my mind - I’m very aware that Delena is the writer’s flavor at this moment, the idea of him not caring it all is...

Look, I’ll say this. Katherine may have said that she loved Damon because it would rattle Elena. But, what seems to confuse people is her behavior in 2x21-2x22 — in comination with these words. Hence, it’s very much a statement like, “I don’t get it! First, Katherine loves Stefan forever (and ever, amen!) and then she loves Damon. Katherine’s confusing!” that tends to circulate around the fandom.

But, I’ll agree there.

She’s an enigma, and I don’t deny that.

That said, I think that what you’re pointing out is actually pretty simple, and just wasn’t told to you throughout the season…which brings me to my first point: people do not always mean what they say, or say what they mean. It’s a fact of life that television tends to neglect.

Katherine admitted, in the finale, that she didn’t let love get in the way. We can assume from that that Katherine knows what love is, and has to dodge away from caring about people. But why? My personal opinion is that years of running from Klaus and having her family killed forced her to have a stiff upper lip when it comes to people, and it’s spread to...

Here is my problem with the idea that Katherine is indifferent to Damon; you (used as a generalization) might be able to say that Katherine plays games with him just because she likes his reactions and lusts after him because she can’t have him, but if you compare her relationships with Mason/Stefan to hers with Damon, you can see obvious differences – ones that say more about what Kat’s feeling.

Because SK and DK are compared to death, I’ll start with Mason.

Like her relationship with Damon, Katherine doesn’t (well, can’t) compel Mason, so his love for her seems legitimate. However, Katherine is just using him/their relationship to prepare for the sacrifice. (With Damon, there is no clear reason to use him, so…that’s out of the question. The most she could have used him for was sex…and I wouldn’t blame her.) When Damon tells Katherine that Mason is dead, Katherine is miffed. And, that’s not an exaggeration either, because she comes right back with Plans B, C, and D. She didn’t really care, IMO. Whereas, with Damon, the idea of him dying has Katherine looking shocked, trying to explain herself to him, and basically asking for...

I’ve heard quite a bit about Katherine only wanting Damon for the challenge – and, I’ll admit, Katherine likes playing games with Damon a lot more now that he gives as good as he’s getting – but I see some…not-so-crackfic changes in Katherine’s behavior that, to me, say a bit more.

Looking at Katherine in 2x01 – 2x17, you can easily see that Katherine always has a plan to save herself, and that plan comes before anything and everything. She taunts Damon, insults him, mocks him – anything she can do to get a bad reaction and get him to believe she’s telling the truth. Now, a few of us, as DK shippers, have had our own (sometimes far-fetched) theories as to why she does this and what, logically speaking, these behaviors might be motivated from, but, in all truth, the illogical aspects of a character’s motivations are never really clear until fans pick them apart until there’s nothing left.

The most we can do is work with what we know is factual, and can be proven. Anything else is theory.
