cassie-1-2-3 said:
Nigger was an informal slang term used by slave owners, in reference to their slaves. I don't think it was necessarily "coined" by anyone, but it was adopted by slave owners.

It derived from the neutral verb, "negro", which means black. Slave owners took the word, changed it into "nigger", and used the word to refer to their slaves because they didn't want to dignify them with a real name.

It's insulting to black people because it can signify that you are undeserving of a birth-given name, simply because your skin is dark.

In recent day, the term has been altered into a term of endearment of sorts. Some black people have taken a hurtful word and turned it into something they can use to lessen it's original meaning. It can still be offensive, depending on who you are and how you use it.
It's a touchy issue that I wish everyone would just drop. i'd rather nobody called anyone a nigger, in a good or bad way. It would eliminate a lot of tension.

To be honest. No word in itself is bad... it's just the associations we make with it. You can have a word that sounds the same in different languages and has a different meaning in each language. So it's not the word that's intrinsically bad, it's what we make it mean. But, If you have to type it with hyphens and asterisks, the answer should be obvious. The "N" word, I believe, was originally used in a derogotory sense toward any ignorant person. When there were slaves in the US, the slave owners (mainly white families) started to use the word against their slaves. The word just stuck. It's considered extremely rude because when it first came into use it was used to describe somebody who was ignorant, stupid, good for nothing other than manual labor. In the end, it just turned into a racist, bigoted term that is looked upon as derogatory and condescending. In other words, and it is not just another word for African American. Whoever said that was seriously mistaken and probably missing a few thousand brain cells.

It used to mean a black person.

But personally, I like the term "Negro" better than "Nigger" because "Nigger" sounds offensive. "Negro" does too, but it's the Spanish word for black.

I don't find the term "nigger" offensive. I've become desensitized to its frequent usage. Where once it was offensive, it is now apart of our colloquial conversation.

In all technicalities nigger means one who cannot support their family or is simply too lazy to be of any worth. I find it ironic that whites like me called slaves niggers yet we were the lazy ones. Hmmm.

It is only a bad word, if the person hearing decides to let themself be offended by it. I mean, if you call me a moron, I'm not going to blink an eye. You call me a honky-white boy, I'm still not going to give a shit. The fact is... 'black' people were oppressed fro many years by 'white' people and considered 'nigger' to be a word that described them as a white man's slave, at least that is what I think it is. It is probably fair enough for them to be offended, though I don't know why they even bother to allow themselves to be offended by it these days. It no longer has the same meaning that it once had.

Forgive me for answering a question with a question, but what does 'coined' mean?

Oh and the word 'nigger' was used by the people who enslaved black people long ago (well, not THAT long ago). That's what they called the slaves. Therefore black people have hated the word ever since.

what i believe is, you shouldnt even ues a term to describe black people. they are PEOPLE just like us. and i like to just call them people. and using the word "NIGGER"? it can be really offensive depending on your purpose and tone of using it. "Black" is the official term, so if you call them something other than people, call them "blacks".

What about Negroes, or African-Americans? I'm pretty certain that there are better words for classifying someone of that race than just 'black'.

The term "Negro," like the term "colored" has fallen into disrepute, as the are remnants of a very difficult and divided time. African American is still acceptable, as is black, although most prefer black, as many don't identify as African American unless they are recent immigrants. I had a long conversation about this with black PCVs concerning the racism that exists in my current country of service. Everyone is black here, because they are all African, but it's disturbing how they still find reasons to be prejudicial. Based on language especially, but also based on how BLACK you actually are, with lighter shades of black being in higher favor. Yeah. It's even happening in Africa, and in a country that was never colonized by Europeans to boot.

I haven't been able to research it, but from what I've heard it started off as a perfectly harmless word, a corrupted form of negro not nee-grow but nay-gro. As for the word nigger itself, no word is a bad word. Words are just collections of sounds that we give meaning to. Unfortunately, this word has been given a very bad connotation over time, so if you want to know, no word is bad, but the connotation is. Even still, if everyone would quit bitching about who can and can't say it, if nobody cared about anyone saying it, I don't know what would happen. Just my two cents, hope it helps.

No, it is unacceptable to call anyone a racial slur. Black people just made a bigger deal of it. Pretty sure Chinese dont like to be called Chink, Vietnamese dont like to be called Jungle Bunny, and Mexicans dont like to be be called Beaners or Gatehoppers. In america being Prejudice to anyone can end up with Charges on you.

Because it makes a significant number of people angry when used. Really though, no one should use the word. Also, it is learned behavior and it can be un-learned. There should be one word that everyone agrees on. Honestly, I find it a little confusing. I say black or African-American but really don't know if those are correct. It is not black vs. white or vice versa. It is good vs. evil.

I have always understood "nigger" to derive from the southern USA pronunciation of "negro" - something like "negre" - a convenient and contemptuous way of referring to slaves. Therefore, its use has been offensive for more than 150 years. For example, Frank Richards, in a story in a popular boy's weekly in 1908 in the UK, refers to "the objectionable word nigger". So, there is no excuse for using it now. The best way to treat it is as equal to the most objectionable swear word you can think of. Not a word to use with people you want to respect you.
