How to make a Crossover Picture

I just decided to share on how I make my crossovers. This is also to help others who want to learn how to make crossovers. :)

Now making crossovers is a fun hobby, especially if you're pairing up your favorite characters.

So here's what you need to make a crossover:
1. Photo Editing Program - this is the main thing that you need in making crossovers. You can use any program you like. I use Pixlr. It's an online editing website and you don't need to pay or register. Just get in there. xD
2. Your favored pictures. You can merge numerous characters in one picture, your choice.

Tip#1: Use picture with great quality for better result.
=====================================================================
Tip#2: Here's a great site to use screencaps of animated films. -- DisneyScreencaps.com
=====================================================================

Now you've got what you need, let's start with the editing.

Step 1: Choose the images that you want to edit.
In my sample, I used a picture of Jasmine and Sinbad (with Marina).

Step 2: The next thing you need to do is to remove the background of the picture that you want to move. The easiest way to do this is to click the magic wand tool found at the toolbar.

Step 3: Once you've clicked that, click anywhere on the background as dotted lines will soon appear. Press the 'delete' button to remove this. Continue clicking & deleting on any leftovers of background.

Note: Just make sure you don't delete any part of the picture. If the magic wand would delete some part, then use the eraser found at the toolbar.

Step 4: Duplicate the layer by right-clicking the "Background" layer then 'duplicate layer'. Then click delete again to remove the white background. The duplicated layer will now have a checkered background. Hold Ctrl + D to remove the dotted lines.

Step 5: Next, drag the 'Background copy' to the 2nd picture.

And you're basically done here. Adding effects is optional. Just discover some of the buttons there, especially the "Filter" tab.
Here's my final result:

There are also other methods in extracting the picture:
In the Toolbox, there is also the Lasso tool. It's the one that looks like a rope.

There are 2 kinds of Lasso tool, the Freehand and the Polygon Lasso tool.

In the Freehand, all you need to do is just click and hold the mouse and drag it on the picture that you want to keep. The only difficult thing there is that you have to be really careful not to hit any part of the picture that you want to keep.

In the Polygon, it's very similar to the Freehand, just click and click on the edges of the picture.

Note: On both tools, make sure you complete the whole cycle. I mean, you should end your point from where you've started.

To know that you've done this, dotted lines would appear again. Now here's what's different from the magic wand tool. When the dotted line appears, hold Ctrl + X to cut then Ctrl + V to paste the desired picture that you want to keep.

Note: Now mostly there would be some leftovers of the other parts of the picture, to remove this, use the eraser tool. This may be very time consuming but the result is great.

So this is my tutorial. It's a bit lengthy but it's the best that I could do.

If there are some confusions or clarifications, go ahead and ask. :)

GypsyMarionette, what do you mean? You can't move the image in the picture? Or you can't transfer the first image in the second image?

And yes, just press the delete key on your keyboard to remove the excess.

I think I figured out what it was.
See I'm used to paint where I free select a form then I can move it to wherever I want within the picture. With Pxlr, at least this what I think is happening, the layer lines up with the other picture.
See the character I had in the second picture was on the opposite side of where I wanted him in the other picture.

Oh, you can move the picture by using the 'Move tool', the one with the arrow icon with a small four sided arrow below it. -- http://i.imgur.com/X1YbM.png

Oh and if the image is not facing the right way (if you want to flip the first image, just go to edit<free transform. -- http://i.imgur.com/pWc54.png

This is what would happen. -- http://i.imgur.com/QFUEF.jpg
Just press the Enter button to remove the rectanlge.

Hope this helps again. :)

Ohh, well here's what you have to do:

First, Right click the 'Background' layer. -- http://i.imgur.com/xHMKi.png

Second, choose 'duplicate layer' among the options in the pop-up menu. -- http://i.imgur.com/UlEgo.jpg

It will now look like this -- http://i.imgur.com/YTvqw.png

Third, since it's already duplicated, click anywhere inside the picture then click the 'delete' button found in your keyboard. Just make sure the 'Background layer' is the highlighted layer (it should be blue) -- http://i.imgur.com/zDccN.png

Here's a zoom-in picture of how the checkered background of the layer will look like. -- http://i.imgur.com/ezbF7.jpg

Then after that, drag that layer to the other image that you want to crossover and just follow the other steps. :)

Hope that clears up things. :)

It won't work for me though! I understand what to do, but it won't let me copy the image and it won't let me scroll down! What should I do?

^What do you mean by copy? If you're copying the entire image click Edit > Select All then copy (ctrl+c) and paste (ctrl+v) it.
If you're copying a specific part of the image, make sure the part is highlighted (with dotted lines) then copy and paste it.

You can't scroll down the image? Use the Navigator Window. Just point your mouse in it until it becomes a hand then drag it to the position you want. -- http://i.imgur.com/mmzlg.png

I tried doing one more touch up to my photo, but it wont let me do anything! It keeps saying "The layer must first be rasterized to be editable"!

chesire said:
^You must be editing the font, well you can't edit that (you can only change the font/size/color). To make it editable, right click the layer > click Rasterize layer. Note: when you rasterize the layer, YOU CAN NO LONGER EDIT THE TEXT.

This is a great article, it will defenitley help me in the future, the only difference is that I'm using Gimp, but I think the functions are pretty much the same! I know that it has a magic wand tool!
