Disney Princess Article: What I don't love about each DP

There are many things that I love about each DP but there are certain character traits that aren't as admirable in them. Though, it's because of the mix of good and not-so-good traits that a character becomes interesting. Having said so, I still love all DPs, some more and some less. So, here's my counter-part article on "What I love about each DP".

1. Snow:
Her bossiness is tad bit annoying to me. I mean, why did she have to lecture around dwarfs and act not-so-her-age. I never could fit this in her adorable, cute and chirpy personality. Her lecturing and bossiness on moral grounds are so out of character and her age.

2. Aurora:
Her passiveness has always troubled me. She never questioned anyone even after knowing the truth. Acceptance and forgiveness is great, but not attempting to know the truth of your life is another level of passive behavior. I mean trust the fairies for your well being, but at least ask, find out another solution than to simply resign to your ill-fate.

3. Cinderella:
Tough to say, esp not being in her shoes, but not raising voice against abuse is something I don't really advocate, as per today's time. Not having known her rights or options, especially when she didn't have any kind of backing, it would have been tough, but I think I'd still not put up with so much abuse for this long.

4. Ariel:
My greatest disappointment in her is that she was never shown to deliver an honest, heart-felt apology for putting Atlantica in danger for her personal dreams, even though indirectly. If only there was a beautiful patch-up scene between Triton and Ariel, where they could both realize their own mistakes.

5. Belle:
I found it disappointing that she couldn't admit her love for beast on her own. Only when she found herself running out of time, did she realize her love for him. How sad it was that she decided to let go of her chance of making all things right and like always, put her heart at the backseat followed on rational thing to do, to save her father. She could have asked for help from beast, you know. How I wished she could have trusted her heart then, more than her mind.

6. Jasmine:
A tad bit more assuming and rude, than needed. I mean I totally love her fierceness, but she didn't have to make a scene out of every turn of events, which didn't go down well with her. Just a little reserve at some points of the movie would've made me love her to the fullest.

7. Pocahontas:
Nothing truly wrong with her, except that her personality has no depth. Everything she does is so emotionless that it makes me go blah every time. When she preaches, or have fun, or is scared for the fate of her love, she just doesn't have depth in her expressions and feelings. Come on girl put some heart into things you do.

8. Mulan:
It's really tough for me to point anything negative about this girl. She did what she did, as best as she could. But for the heck of it, to be honest, the only thing that made me go, oh but why Mulan, was her agreeing to follow into a role that her parents/society drew for her and never questioning it or attempting to make them understand that this is not who she is underneath. I mean I understand her dilemma there, but still I was from inside asking, why did you have to be so obedient about it.

9. Rapunzel:
Ok, honestly, a person who hasn't met another person in her lifetime and hadn't dealt with outside world ever, her behavior was tilted more towards idealism than reality. For being a DP movie, it's all great, but in reality, it would hardly be the case. She's got to be much more nervous and skittish and even aloof and reserved than shown in the movie.

10. Tiana:
A little more rude and biting in her words than needed. I mean no one forced her into making her dream a reality, did they? Even her parents wanted her to enjoy life more than obsessing over one ambition in life. I wish she could have enjoyed the journey to her dreams more than the destination itself. She didn't have to be alone in her struggle for her dreams.

11. Merida:
A bit too much aggression. She needs to get down from the high horse she keeps riding on and listen to others carefully before plunging into action. She could have saved everyone a lot of trouble, if only she had a cool head on her.

Now that I have picked on every DP, I hope I haven't hurt any loyalist fans here too much. Let's be nice in arguments. Love to hear from you all, as always.

deedragongirl I have to agree, if Merida is my sister, I would be frighten of her!

wavesurf I agree with some of these. Aggressiveness, bossiness, issuing rude and excessively judgemental comments, being too assuming, and being too carefree or bland are issues, also. I noticed all of these. I don't gloss over them. It's good to see someone else picking up on these things, too. However, I don't consider Aurora and Cinderella completely spineless characters, though. One grew up in ignorance, and didn't have all the information, and was told everything on very short notice ( inducing mental shock), while the other had no supporting figures to back her, and would have only intensified her abuse by mouthing off to her abusers. I also don't consider Mulan being too obedient as her primary flaw. The movie shows Mulan's laziness, her lack of discipline, and her general disorganized approach to life as her flaws-- before she goes in her father's place. Merida is just a prime example of someone being really inconsiderate of others. Merida doesn't really listen to what others say, and that's why the consequences of her choices go so far awry. The primary reason it wasn't included, likely is because Disney Princess movies have an overall short time limit, and also this storyboard version is much more violent for the kiddos. I still think the existing "Daddy, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to--" actually suffices for an apology. Belle bothers me more than Ariel. Belle never officially apologizes to the beast/Adam--for being the reason that an angry mob descended down on his castle, and she doesn't say she is sorry for distracting him, so that he gets stabbed in the back and killed. People say Ariel didn't apologize enough. In my opinion, Belle needed to apologize some more, too. Belle said she was sorry for the beast getting mauled. But Belle endangered the lives of Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, etc., and Adam--- and had much more to apologize for, but saying, "Of course I came back, I couldn't let them... Oh, this is all my fault! If only I'd gotten here sooner!"--- isn't really issuing an apology. Say, "you're sorry" Belle. Don't talk around it and mince words. Eh. ALL of the princesses HAVE WEAK AREAS, imo. To some degree, it's all a subjective analysis. You take the weaknesses you can tolerate more, and that kind of thing. Great analysis, and good article!!

anukriti2409 ^Thanks for reading! I didn't say Aurora and Cinderella are completely spineless characters. In fact Cinderella has more spine than most of them. I said, in one incident, where I expected them to stand more than just follow through like Aurora, esp when you have just known that your whole life was a lie, one must have thousands of questions rather than just crying at that moment and just agreeing to next actions without even asking whys and whats of it. That's a level of passiveness that I find not so admirable in her. Cinderella and Belle are passive too, but not like Aurora, imo. I already said pointed out that Cinderella didn't have the backing and could have been scared of consequences, but then that's the trait I was pointing out, that despite feeling so, some may choose to fight it outward while Cinderella chose to fight it inward - waiting and believing. That's the trait in Cinderella I mind because she never once changes her fight from inward to outward, despite growing abuse. I completely disagree of your analysis of Ariel's and Belle's apology. Belle has nothing to apologize to Beast in any case. It was Beast who kept her captive in the first place, she didn't go there out of free will. Beast was doomed to far worse fate if it wasn't for Belle. Furthermore, there are far less people in Beast's castle than an entire kingdom of Atlantica, so how does Belle owe it more than Ariel, I completely fail to understand. For Mulan, they were minor shortcomings and doesn't bother me as much. What bothers me more is that she would have tried to fit in and become someone she was not just because she thought it would have brought honor to her family. I also completely disagree that Merida is a prime example of someone inconsiderate of others. She just won't let her basic rights be crumpled under the shadow of other's convenience of traditions. She's very much considerate of her brothers and her father. I prefer Merida's approach much more than Aurora in this particular incident. It was way too much of a good coincidence (literally fairytale one) that she had fallen in love with the same person as she was betrothed to, lucky for her. I can't imagine her miserable life if not for this lucky coincidence. I think Merida is a prime example of a role model for youngsters who get married without having the head for it and then wonder what went wrong with their lives. UnholyNoise Great article overall, but I do think your take on Cinderella is a little unfair. There would be no practical reason for her to take a stand against her situation - and actually doing so in that time likely would have made things worse for her. However abusive her family was toward her, they were feeding her and keeping a roof over her head. Speaking up likely would have made the abuse worse or would have gotten her tossed out on the street. So I think it was wise for her to do what she did. And honestly, I don't think Cinderella gets enough credit for her emotional/psychological resilience. There's nothing passive about her way of handling her abuse - she pretty much did all she could to the extent that her circumstances would allow. Just surviving in those circumstances and keeping her humanity and kindness intact is extremely brave -- and proactive.

324anna What you said about Snow, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Tiana and Merida was exactly what I dislike about them. Now about Cinderella, I do see your point, but I generally agree with UnholyNoise, even though I know I wouldn't be able to have her patience and emotional strength. I always thought Belle's only flaws were her curiosity and her special snowflake syndrome, which wasn't even intended to be a flaw imo. I had never thought of the point you made about her inability to tell Adam she loves him before it was too late. It is very interesting, and it makes sense. And while I adore Pocahontas, I always thought something was off about her, and I couldn't understand why I sometimes found her kinda boring, even though she had an amazing personality (| disagree about her character having no depth). The way you explained your point made me realize that she does tend to look apathetic a lot of times in the movie, but I think it mostly has to do with her expressions. I do see your point about Mulan, and I agree, but I never disliked that about her, simply because I often do the exact same thing, so I can relate. Overall, great article, your arguments made sense and you explained them very well!

That's really cool writing, I respect that a lot! :D I disagree with you about Snow, Cinderella and Aurora but I see your point of view. :) I totally agree with what you said about Belle except I don't think she was thinking rationally when saving her father only because I think it would've been more rational to ask Beast for help since she needed his help the first time she went out on her own and encountered the wolves. I also completely agree with everything you said about Jasmine. I think a little bit of reserve with her would've gone a really long way into making her like 10x more likable. :) Great points about Rapunzel, Tiana and Merida. I completely agree with you ,spot on.

Thank you for appreciating my writing style, yes it was challenging to write a negative article about DP without ruffling some feathers but looks like it came out fine. I was saying, for Belle, that she thought she was doing a morally right thing to leave beast and care for her father instead. But the truth was she never had to make the choice if she could only trust her heart enough. Thanks for sharing ur opinions

Okay, I just made this article mainly because I have nothing to do also to show people that the DP's are not negative influences on kids! I'm going to examine my life and say how each princess influenced me in my life.

1. Snow White- Okay, I'm not gonna lie, Snow White actually influenced me to clean up more (lol)- to be fair Whistle While You Work is a damn catchy song so I had to sing it! She also told me to believe in someday and I still am! Don't know what's going to happen but I'll see when I get there :)

Disney Sequels: Good or bad?

I just watched Cinderella III: A Twist In Time..
and I was expecting it to be absolute shit, as everyone makes Disney Sequels out to be really bad because they aren't really necessary, but in all honesty, I loved it!

At times, it was cheesy and the songs weren't as good as the ones in the first movie, but I really enjoyed it. It showed more of Prince Charming and gave him a bit more of a personality...
Example:
The King: I forbid you to take one more step down these stairs!
Prince Charming: *sneaky grin* Okay.... *jumps out the window*

Prince Charming has always been my least favourite prince but after this, idk.. it makes me like him more :)

Which raises the question.. are Disney sequels all that bad?.. I think not xD

Review of " Tangled"

I was pleasantly surprised. I still don't like the title but, you cant judge a movie by its title. The movie as some of you probably already know-was beautifully done and the characters were so memorable. Her two sidekicks " Pascal" and " Maximus" were very entertaining. Both said more with their actions than words could have said. Yes they are part of the few mute but very funny Disney characters. By mute I mean no talking. And Mother Gothel certainly deserves her spot in the Disney Villain line. She was wicked in every sense of the word. Not frightening. Although this little girl was so scared...

Yeah, another interlude, but bear with me. There are often discussions about why some princesses/heroines are included in the line-up and others not. To me, the selection makes mostly sense, although I’m sure that Disney decides mostly based on the success of the movie and marketing strategy.
