To us, these are two very greatly performed songs, but behind each and every songs lies some profound meaning, and this one strikes Amy especially.
If you are unaware, Amy used to have a sister. But when her sister was around four to five years of age, she died. I did some research and found out that her name was Bonnie. She drowned in the bathtub. The age difference was not large, Amy being only six at the time, so of course this was devastating to Amy.
But all things are not bad. This tragic event lead to the makings of two very great songs. Amy has found an outlet to release her inner sorrow and love for her passed sister.
But still, the loss of someone that close hurts people, and many of us know how it feels.
In Like You, the first stanza reads: "Stay low
soft, dark and dreamless
far beneath my nightmares and loneliness.
I hate me for breathing without you.
I don't want to feel anymore for you..."
"Stay low, soft, dark and dreamless far beneath my nightmares and loneliness."= Describes her sisters body, dead and in the ground, leaving Amy alone with the solid memory of her sister.
"I hate me for breathing without you."= I hate being alive without you [breathing/alive].
"I don't want to feel anymore for you..."= I don't want to live for the both of us. (A lot like the line before)
The second stanza reads: "grieving for you
I'm not grieving for you
nothing real love can't undo
and though I may have lost my way
all paths lead straight to you"
"...grieving for you, I'm not grieving for you..."= I guess this line is pretty self explanatory. She doesn't want to feel the pain of loss for her anymore.
"...nothing real love can't undo..." =We're familiar enough with this I don't need to explain.
"...and though I may have lost my way all the paths lead straight to you."= Amy is so confused, she doesn't feel like her self anymore. No matter what Amy does, she can not avoid death, she will eventually die like her sister has.
The third: "I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you"= I want to die, I want to be with you again.
Fourth: "Halo
blinding wall between us
melt away and leave us alone again
humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death"
"Halo blinding wall between us melt away and leave us alone again..."= While I'm alive and you're dead, we can no longer be together. If I die or you (I guess the term would be) resurrect then we can be together, alone and together.
"Humming, haunted somewhere out there..."= I know you still are somewhere, anywhere but here.
"I believe our love can see us through in death."= Self explanatory.
Fifth: "I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you"
"I long to be like you, lie cold in the ground like you..."= We've been over this already
"There's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you..."= I can still join you, even now. I'm not grieving for you
"I'm coming for you."= I'm coming for you (going to die) <- That is what is assumed is meant here
Sixth: "You're not alone
no matter what they told you you're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore"
"(Enter Sixth Stanza Here)"= I will be with you again, [soon]"
Seventh: "I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you did
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
and as we lay in silent bliss

"(1st 4 lines)"= I want to die and be with you. I'm not grieving for you.
"And as we lay in silent bliss I know you remember me."= I know you have not forgotten me (I'm a bit shaky on this particular line).
"(Rest of quote)"= We've covered.
Onto "Hello" (Then I Promise To Be Done...)
The First Stanza Reads: "Playground school bell rings again
Rain clouds come to play again

Hello I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
Hello"
"Playground school bell rings again. Rain clouds come to play again." Describes this refers to a child, someone of younger age. Rain clouds describe sorrow.
"Has no one told you she's not breathing?"= Someone has died. In this case, Bonnie
"Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to. Hello"= I'm the only person left to talk to.
Second: "If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me I'm not broken
Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry"
"If I smile and don't believe. Soon I know I'll wake from this dream."= If I pretend this never happened, everything will return to normal. She thinks it's all a dream, and by not believing, she'll wake up.
"Don't try to fix me I'm not broken."= She's denying the truth, demanding everything is okay. That she doesn't need any help.
"Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide"= I know she's dead, but by saying she isn't or pretending it isn't real, she's lying. By lying she can hide from the truth.
"Don't cry"= She starts realizing the truth, fighting back the tears. She's falling apart.
Third: "Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping
Hello I'm still here
All that's left of yesterday"
"Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping"= She knows, for a fact, that she is not dreaming. This is real. Her little sister has died.
"Hello, I'm still here."= I'm still alive
"All that's left of yesterday"= I'm alone, she's no longer here. (In her mind she's the only one alive... <-Not really, I'm failing at making the point... Hopefully you know what I mean...)
I hope this helps understand the reason behind these two songs and gives you some more information on Amy Lee's history.
