Your article brought tears to my eyes, I know exactly how you feel. I also have two dogs but until 2 years ago I had three. Columbo died of cancer before he was even 9 and I didn't even know he was sick. It was so quick. I have Columbo's puppy Cutey (now nearly 9 years old)from the first little that Cutey's mum had.
It's not lame or silly to grieve over the loss of an animal - it's natural. However many people don't seem to understand this. To be my dogs aren't just pets, they are part of the family.
I'm sure that you and Toby were great mates and your tribute to him is heart-warming and to be commended, J.
