This is a short character review of one of the best Firefly characters, the man they call Jayne!
When I first started watching Firefly, which wasn't too long ago, I fell in love with Jayne immediately. He was like a Firefly version of Spike to me. Kind of. Not only was he very, very, attractive, his character was appealing. He was the joking muscle. Big, tough, and intimidating, but absolutely hilarious. He had all the best lines, along with Wash. His relationships with the members of the crew were interesting, especially with the Tams. For a long time all he did was tease poor Simon and complain about River being a hassle. Overall, he was a very enjoyable character. My opinion soon changed however, in the 8th episode of the show, Ariel.
In this episode Jayne secretly makes a deal with the enemy, agreeing to hand over the Tams for a large portion of money. Jayne, being a money hog, of course would agree to this. When they first showed him secretly communicating with them, I immediately jumped up from the couch and started screaming "NOOOO!!!" My favorite character, BETRAYING Serenity? Betraying Mal, and the Tams? All his friends? I almost felt as if he had betrayed me! In the end the Tams didn't get caught, but Mal finds out about Jayne's betrayal and almost kills him. This whole scene I was scared out of my wits, wondering if he was going to die, and when he didn't, I was relieved. I still hadn't forgiven him though. I didn't until Simon & River found out, and they forgave him. After that he was the same ol' Jayne, goofy and rather idiotic, with his guns and his women. He was never my favorite character in the show again, he was replaced by Wash, but I still love him.
