Who out there's still watching reruns and listening to past songs, awaiting the day that Glee comes on? I know. This sucks. We're all just wondering on what happens next in the chapter of Glee. Here's my input on what'll happen to New Directions member Sugar Motta
As usual, Sugar wants to be a major star. It was her dream prior to the first day of school last year ("The Purple Piano Project"). However she suffers through diagnosed Aspergers, and her singing needs more work. Her training with Shelby Corcoran
didn't turn out as well, and she still stands as a background girl in the Troubletones, singing backup for former New Directions members Mercedes Jones
and Santana Lopez
. She finally realizes that her backup days are over, and decides to get more training for her singing and dancing skills.
She offers her help in getting new members by participating in the group number. Unfortunately, the Glee club gets slushied and humiliated. Sugar reminds this experience to last year ("The Purple Piano Project"), especially when new Glee club member Catherine Mason
tells the Glee club that they need more work, offering to join the Glee club. After hearing Catherine's audition piece, Sugar and the other New Directions members (excluding co-captain, Tina Cohen-Chang
) agree to have Catherine in the group. However, Catherine makes a dance routine practice into a living hell fo the Glee club. Tina steps in and stands up to Catherine, causing her to walk out on New Directions. Tina then leads the group into a group number.
Sugar is in the school's library looking up videos on current artists and idolizes their perfect performances. She decides on being a singer when she graduates out of high school next year. However, she doesn't know how to get there since being tone deaf took a toll on her skills. People in school have even been telling Sugar that she won't make it in the performance world since she sucked so much. Sugar wasn't going to take it from those students. So she seeks a singing tutor for afterschool sessions.
Meanwhile, Sugar tells this news to her current boyfriend, Rory Flanagan
. A part of him was happy for her, but another part of him felt really guilty. He told Sugar that he didn't want her to go around feeling proud for the both of them without telling the real truth. With that, he ends up telling her about how he lied about is visa ("Heart"). Sugar gets furious with him, and then asked if any other past moments they had were lies. Rory replied by saying that he always wanted to be with Sugar, and thinks that he's the sweetest girl he's met since he came from Ireland. Sugar denies this and walks away, leaving Rory upset.
Tina is the first to notice Sugar and Rory in a rocky relationship, and confronts Sugar at lunch. Sugar goes on about how Rory is a liar and that she can't trust him with anything. Tina suggests that Rory may have some real feelings about her that Sugar doesn't realize. Sugar doesn't believe this, and then focuses on her future. She tells Tina that she wants to be a performer, and has hired a tutor to help her. She also adds that she doesn't need Rory to make her life happy. Sugar walks out of the room and goes to a classroom to study.
Sugar is at home with the tutor, practicing runs. However, she gets distracted by what happened between her and Rory. But then she snaps out of it and goes back to practicing. Then she suddenly hits a perfect note. The tutor is very pleased with her, and they continue to practice again. Later in the week, Sugar performs a ground-breaking solo in front of the Glee club, and they all applaud her hard work. Unfortunately, Rory is so upset with Sugar breaking up with her, he doesn't respond to her singing. Sugar tells the Glee club that it's good to be an independent woman in the perfoming arts world, and she can't wait to explore it more. Rory doesn't want that to happen, though.
He confronts her in the hallway later on, convincing her to actually listen to his side of the story. Sugar pretends to not hear him, and continues to listen to songs on her IPod that she could practice for later. Rory begs for her sympathy, but Sugar continues not to listen. Then later on, Sugar walks into the counselor's office where Rory and Emma Pillsbury
were waiting. Emma explains that she wants her and Rory to become one and understand each other regardless of differences. Sugar doesn't want to work anything out, though, because she still thinks that Rory lies to her. Then Rory brings up last Valentine's Day when he felt like he was in war with current New Directions member, Artie Abrams
. Rory confessed that he thought Sugar was a very wonderful girl with a lot of passion. He knew that he'll be in high school for another year, but he didn't want to lose Sugar. She has a smile on her face, and Rory smiles back. Unforunately, Sugar doesn't know how to keep up the relationship now that she's practicing with her singing. Rory says that anything will be fine with him at this point, leaving Sugar with a wider smile.
Walking down the hall, Sugar sings a duet with Rory. They both have sweet moments in the auditorium and then share a kiss. Sugar then brings up her improvement in her performance skills. Rory is very proud of her, but he wishes that he and Sugar will still be together after high school. Sugar assures him that they still have another year in high school together, and they can have all the moments they want together. However, Sugar gets a call from an agent that her tutor has a connection with, and he asks her to do a hair commercial featuring her fabulous singing. This also means that Sugar would have to move out of Lima, and head on out to Los Angeles. As much as Sugar wanted to do it, she kept a promise to Rory that she wouldn't leave him. She asks for a few days to think about it.
Sugar turns to the Glee girls for advice on what she should do. Current Glee club member Brittany S. Pierce
says that it's a bad idea since the hair product used in the commercial is terrible anyways. Tina suggests that if she wants to do it, then she should confront Rory on what he thinks. Catherine says that she should do it anyway, knowing that Sugar and Rory will meet up later on in life. Sugar tries to think of a decision, and then thanks the girls before leaving the room.
Sugar and Rory meet up at a park area where they have ice cream. Sugar explains how she got an offer to be in the hair commercial. Rory is somewhat okay with this. However, Sugar tells him that she turned it down because she didn't want to leave all of her close friends behind. Rory spoke up immediately and said that he wanted Sugar to do the hair commercial if it made her happy. Sugar shook her head and then told her honest feelings for Rory. She also adds that she'll have plenty of time to do hair commercials and other things during or after college. Rory lights up, and they both smile and share a hug.
Sugar ends her junior year, feeling as if she accomplished a lot. She won back Rory, found out what she wanted to do, and helped New Directions with some of their conflicts. Now, she's ready to return to McKinley for her senior year of high school.
