This is just a rant of a harmony fanboy, not an actual fan-fiction. However I am writing this to address a very specific point so feel free to read and comment whether you’re a harmony fan or not. However note that I am a Harmony fanboy and will not be being overly sensitive in reference to other ships. Also note I’m addressing harmony fans specifically in this.
Harmony (H/HR) fans have taken their fair share of hits over the years. The most obvious being harmony did not become canon, JKR had a different idea of how romance would occur amongst her characters. I am not here to debate or complain about that (however I am in no way defending it either). But ever since then we have taken our fair share of snide remarks and flames for standing by our pairing. There have been different things over the years, most ridiculous and easily dismissible but there’s always been one single thing that just gets under my skin like nothing else. It’s something heron (R/HR) fans will say to us:
“Harry and Hermione are more like brother and sister”
This statement is nothing less than fucking stupid.
Do any of you have any siblings at all within your age group? Do you? Now think for a minute, how do you act around them? Do you get along? Are you best friends?
Of course you don’t.
Siblings fight like cats and dogs. This isn’t a cliché, it isn’t a generalization, it’s a universal fact. If you’re not bickering then you’re probably ignoring each other. I’m not saying you hate each other or that you never stop fighting, just the majority of the time. And yes, I’m talking about teenagers mostly since that’s what Harry and Hermione are. So if you’re a forty year old and you want to tell me about how great you get along with your siblings, I don’t care. It doesn’t count.
So how do Harry and Hermione act?
Well they generally get along pretty well, occasionally they disagree but they both respect each other enough to come to some sort of agreement. They share a few similar interests, they laugh together, they cry together and they mostly understand each other.
Does that sound like siblings to you?
Don’t believe me yet? You don’t have any siblings yourself to confirm? That’s okay, then let’s look at siblings portrayed in the Harry Potter universe. Meaning Ron and Ginny. Ron and Ginny don’t get along all that well. Most of the time Ron considers his sister to be nothing more than an annoyance and Ginny see Ron as just some idiot. While they keep full out fighting to a minimum most of their dialogue is bickering. While deep down they care for each other, on the surface it’s anything but. Ron’s only signs of caring for Ginny are his overly protective nature for who she’s dating. The only times they’re seen working together is during very serious situations usually where they’re fighting for their lives.
Again, this sounds nothing at all like how Harry and Hermione act. But you know who it does sound like?
Ron and Hermione.
Oh yeah those two are fighting nonstop. What with Ron not respecting Hermione or her interests and Hermione’s disgust at Ron’s table manners you could mistake them for siblings.
Now I’m not going to use this to bash heron, I’m only trying to get my point across. So please if you want to hate HHR (and u shouldn’t) at least have a better reason than that. And to my fellow HHR fans hopefully I’ve been of help to you if you ever get in an argument where someone tries to use this as justification to bash your favorite pairing. I’m open to any comments on the matter.
