Why isn't young Tom Riddle killed by the Slytherin basilisk?

When Tom Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets when he was at Hogwarts,he started interacting with the Slytherin basilisk.Since a human is killed by mere eye contact with a basilisk,why isn't Riddle killed?
