Chapter 1/ Prologue
A rude Awakening
1800 hours. 8-27-10
“Hostile! Hostile! RPG!” That was the first thing I heard before a flash of light hit our LAV. When I awoke, I found myself in a rescue Helicopter being taken from a battlefield. “…What…What happened?” I managed to ask to the first person I could see. The Soldier gave no answer, but he simply continued to press against my chest. I hadn’t even realized it until now, but my entire body was numb. I could barely move my head, and I wanted to see if anyone from my team was with us. There was so much blood, whatever had happened to me was life threatening and now I began to fear for my life. Then a medic turns to me with an IV, which he applied to keep me alive just long enough to get to the base. “Hold on! Five minutes!” He shouts to me as I slowly drift out of consciousness. Then there was white, nothing but the solid color of white.
0900 hours. 2-12-11
They told me I had been pronounced dead for exactly 2 minutes, I don’t remember anything from the time I entered the Military Hospital to the time my CO came to me with some medal. “You are very lucky to be alive” he would tell me, “You’ve been very brave, you should be proud.” I didn’t feel proud, I felt like I wanted yell in rage. But I knew better, I was smarter than that. I spent three months in the hospital recovering from a shrapnel wound to my chest. Then four weeks in a mental recovery center trying to get a grip on what had happened to me.
1600 hours. 8-27-10
My Team had been just picked up by a Heavy Armor Detachment when we got hit. The mission was to Assist SF as they looked for vital Intel to the whereabouts of some Taliban Leader. We were at the center of Zargabad, in the Kumar Province of Afghanistan. My team was positioned at the south Entrance of the target building; we were under fired upon by small arms only, nothing big yet. "any word from the d-boys yet?" I say as I walk up to my CO. who shakes his head no in response. "we're just sitting here!" I exclaim and lean myself against the entrance wall. We had been here for hours, just waiting for SF to finish their search. This building was big, but not massive and I was becoming nervous.
