All My Doctors

Chapter 1: New Head of Cardiology

Dr. Lisa Cuddy sat in her office at eight o’clock Monday morning quietly reviewing over some notes and other paperwork. She was very anxious about seeing her newest employee at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Dr. Mitchell Lewis, her former head of Cardiology had recently been fired due to improper relations with several of the nursing staff. Cuddy had interned at St. Ann’s Memorial Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts with a brilliant doctor by the name of David Hayward. When she was offered the position of Dean of Medicine and Hospital Administrator at PPTH the two colleagues had parted ways and hadn’t spoken since. She heard that he had recently been living in Pine Valley, Pennsylvania and was looking for a new job after quitting his job at the hospital in Pine Valley. She knew the man was a brilliant cardiologist and thought she would hire him as the new Head of Cardiology. He had an interview at nine o’clock but she already knew he had the job he had sort of mentored her at St. Ann’s and took her under his wing. There was nothing about the human heart that the man did not know about or any heart procedure he could not perform. He was almost as brilliant as another doctor employed at PPTH and had just as big of an ego if not bigger which she thought might be impossible. She was just ready for him to arrive so she could see him and get reacquainted with him she was curious about everything that had been going on in his life since they last worked together. She was also anxious to introduce him to Dr. Gregory House her Head of Diagnostic Medicine and her very close friend. She hoped the two would get along and that their enormous egos wouldn’t get in the way.
At 8:45 Dr. Hayward arrived in Cuddy’s office and she could not help but notice how good he looked after all these years. He was about six feet, two inches tall with dark hair, eyes, and skin, muscular but slim build and very easy on the eyes. He was wearing a black button up shirt with black slacks and a red tie the colors accented his skin tone very well. Cuddy couldn’t help but notice that he looked very troubled and broken and was determined to find out every detail about her new employee. It had been about twenty-two years since they had last talked to each other and he was just as stunned at her appearance as she was by his. He wrapped his arms around her and asked how she had been.
“Lisa, it has been too long or would you rather I refer to you as Dr. Cuddy? Looks like you have become very accomplished since our days in Boston that is great to hear.”
“David you may call me Lisa but most of the other doctors around here just call me Cuddy. It has been way too long we have a lot of catching up to do and I intend on grilling you very hard about everything.”
“I will let you in on everything it has been a long time since I had a real friend to talk too and you definitely fit that category. So how about we begin the interview and then perhaps I could take you out to lunch so we can get caught up?”
“That sounds great. So can we discuss why you quit your job at Pine Valley Hospital?”
“I trust you Lisa and I trust you with everything I am about to say and to not let it get out of this room.”
“Of course not was it that serious?”
“Well it turns out that when I was in med. school after several parties and one night stands I conceived twin baby girls with a women who I never heard from again until she showed up in Pine Valley in 2003. She had a daughter named Arabella or Babe as she referred to be called and she was pregnant with my nemesis sons’ baby. I had no idea Babe was mine until a few months later when some unusual events occurred and a DNA test was done to determine who her father was.”
Cuddy noticed he was having a very hard time talking about his daughter and couldn’t help but wondered what had happened and what had him so upset.
“Needless to say I was shocked when I learned that she was my daughter and eventually all the memories of the night she was conceived came flowing back to me. It had been at a frat party and Krystal, Babe’s mother and I had had way too many shots of vodka and became very cozy in an upstairs room. Well one thing led to another and we had sex. After that night though we never saw each other again that was until they showed up in Pine Valley.”
“Wow David I had no idea but what does this have to do with you quitting your job at the hospital?”
“Well around May of 2003 I was married to a woman named Anna Devane and she was pregnant with my child. Lenora.”
Cuddy noticed the tears starting to form in the man’s face and knew what he was about to say would not be pleasant.
“We lost her due to a bad heart defect when she was born she didn’t even live for a month. I did everything I could to save her but it was too late her little body and heart just weren’t strong enough and she succumbed to the defect. Anyway years passed by and Babe gave birth to my grandson Adam Chandler III. Last year there was a bad series of tornadoes that hit Pine Valley and Babe was a casualty. She died in the hospital I worked at and though I tried to walk the halls and not be haunted by her memory it was no use. There were too many ghosts there and I had to get away. I could no longer stay in Pine Valley and that is why I quit my job at the hospital and moved here to Princeton.”
Cuddy’s heart broke for the man who had once been her mentor he had lost two babies a fact Cuddy could sort of relate too despite her desperate attempts to get pregnant she was never successful.
“I am so sorry David” she reached out and caressed his hand which was resting on her desk.
“One thing you didn’t mention though was the fact that you and Krystal had twins? What happened to your other baby?”
“Well she showed up earlier this year in Pine Valley and had no idea she was my daughter butt eventually as always the cat came out of the bag and we met and bonded she’s all I have right now. That’s why I’m relying on you to hire me in this new position so I can start off fresh and start a new life here in Princeton.”
“Well you and I both know you are more than qualified for this job and I will definitely hire you but there is one more thing we need to discuss.”
“I have a feeling I know what that is and it’s my criminal record isn’t it?”
“You’re exactly right. You’re quite the bad boy I would go into you’re full history which I have received a rather lengthy copy of but we will just discuss the past couple of years. I’m going to do this briefly but holding people at gunpoint, poisoning people, and removing evidence from crime scenes are major offenses and I have another doctor already who keeps me on pins and needles when it comes to the law please do not make me regret hiring you Dr. Hayward.”
“I will be on my best behavior all of that I left in Pine Valley I have no intention of screwing up my opportunity for a new life here.”
“As long as we understand each other. I will go ahead and introduce you to some other heads of departments and your staff. You will start tomorrow morning at eight o’clock in the morning. Welcome to Prince Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.”
“Thank you so much Lisa I truly appreciate this.”
“You’re welcome. Well let’s go I want to introduce you to Dr. James Wilson he is my head of Oncology. He’s a great guy hopefully the two of you can become friends.”
“Sounds good not to rush things but I have been curious to meet Dr. Gregory House, I hear the man is certifiably insane but completely brilliant at the same time.”
There it was they had come to House.
“Dr. House is one of if not the best doctor at this hospital and you are right to think of him as a genius he is beyond brilliant and beyond a pain in my ass.”
“So I take it he is the doctor who keeps you on pins and needles when it comes to the law?”
“He would be the one.”
She didn’t dare mention the fact that she was head over heels in love with Dr. House as well it was none of Hayward’s business.
Just as she and Dr. Hayward were about to leave her office House barged in saying he needed her consent to do a brain biopsy on an eleven year old. He stopped dead I his tracks once he noticed Dr. Hayward standing there.
“Oh Cuddles I thought you kept your personal and professional life separate and how did I not know about the new soon to never be Mr. Cuddy?”
Cuddy blushed and Hayward smirked.
“Dr. David Hayward it is nice to meet you Dr…?”
“Dr. Greg House and I should warn you she never puts out trust me I’ve tried.”
“HOUSE!!”
Cuddy was beyond embarrassed and quickly getting pissed off. This was not how she wanted the two men to meet.
“So you’re the infamous Dr. Gregory House, finally I get to meet the legend.”
“House this is my new head of Cardiology he starts tomorrow. Dr. Hayward, Dr. House is the head of Diagnostic Medicine and a specialist in infectious diseases. Any new complicated case that no one else can crack goes to Dr. House and his team of doctors and the expertly figure out the mystery diagnosis. House is very good at his job otherwise he would have been fired years ago.”
“Well since my mom here as officially introduced us to each other I have a patient to get back too welcome to PPTH and it was nice to meet you.”
Hayward extended his hand and shook Houses hand before the crippled doctor returned to his office.”
“Sorry about that it was not how I wanted you to meet House. He is an infant but a very intelligent one who does his job very well and has my utmost respect and admiration.”
“He seems very interesting but the way he looked at you and the way you looked at him not to mention the sparks that went flying when you spoke to him… are the two of you seeing each other?”
Cuddy’s heart skipped a beat and she almost fell over with surprise at how fast Dr. Hayward had caught on to her and Houses whatever it was.
“No. We are friends and colleagues nothing more we just get a kick out of each other.”
“Cool, because I wouldn’t mind asking you out on a date sometime if that’s alright with you.”
Cuddy blushed five shades of red and said she didn’t think that would be a great idea since he worked for her.
“Well how about that lunch then we have tons to talk about and catch up on. I’m ready whenever you are Doc.”
