“Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”

I’m so sorry, Jimmy. I know I’m letting you down. You wanted me to dream big, live big, and be great. I’ve done none of that. I’ve settled for ordinary. I’ve given up on my dreams. I’ve all but stopped living. I don’t know how it happened. Time’s just been flying by, and I don’t know how the days have managed to slip past me so many times without my notice. Before I know it, I’ll be twenty-four, the age you were at your death. Who knows if I’ll get much more than that, or if I’ll even get that far? How can I justify continuing to live like this when I know very well that life is far too short to waste? How can I look at your pictures covering my walls knowing I didn’t live up to your plea? I can’t. I have to make a change. Even if I don’t do it for me, I at least owe it to you. I may not make it to be a great actor or even someone whose name is recognized anywhere, but I know there’s more than this out there for me. I can do great things, and I can be great. I can be who you wanted me to be. I’m starting today. I’m sorry, Jimmy....

So I was online the other day, searching Jimmy (again!) and I came across a page that had a fictionalized story of James Dean surviving the crash and becoming a private detective. It was stupid. Then I read about how someone thought that if James Dean HAD survived and gone into hiding, that it would eventually come out because too many people knew, and not all of them could be trusted to keep their mouths shut for very long. It got me to thinking: I'm going to write a story about James Dean surviving the accident. My theory is, only five people really needed to be in on the "cover-up" - Bill Hickman, Sanford Roth, Dr. Bossert and Mr. Kuehl, the funeral home guy. So far I've got about three and a half pages written. Here are the first few paragraphs:

""That guy's got to stop! He'll see us!"

James Dean quickly moved his foot from the accelerator to the brake. The low-slung Spyder jerked slightly to the right as it slowed to the posted speed limit. But the other car, a behemoth Ford Tudor, did not move. He touched the brake again, then accelerated and turned the wheel sharply to the right.

Now, my daughter thinks I REALLY need help! I have picture frames. Most of them hold photos of my family: kids and grandkids. I had a few that had photos of my ex-husband in them, but after he got remarried last fall, I took them down. Didn't take his pictures out of them, just took them down.

Over the last couple of days though, I have replaced the photos of my ex with photos of James Dean (about damn time, too -- we've been divorced for four years!!)

I now have a mini-gallery of James Dean photos in my bedroom. Here they are! I would have them all over the house, but out of respect for my daughter, I do not force my love of James Dean onto her, even though it IS my house and I have every right to hang pictures anywhere I please.

The only "non-picture" is a framed quote from "The Little Prince", his favorite book. It says: "In one of the stars I shall be living, In one of them I shall be laughing, And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing when you look at the sky at night." I had originally bought that after my sister died two years ago because my mom had decided that my sister should be stars, and she (my mom) liked the book, but...

I wrote this blog on myspace on March 2, about three or four days after I watched "Rebel Without A Cause" for the first time ever. Yeah, I know. Hard to believe that I'm this old and I never once thought to watch a James Dean movie. Gimme a break, okay?

"JAMES DEAN, PART II

Well, then, there, now. It seems I've turned fascination into obsession, This is nothing new to me.

When I found out that "Candle In The Wind" was written about Marilyn Monroe, I had to know everything about her. When ABC showed a movie about Ruffian last year, I downloaded every image I could find of her. This one was particularly important to me because when I was younger, my dad and I used to watch horse racing together an she was our favorite horse. After I bought a poster of the Golden Gate Bridge, I surfed the 'net for weeks!

And now, James Dean. Look at my profile, for Pete's sake! Every time I log onto the internet, I search for anything and everything that is even remotely related to James Dean. I know when and where he was born, where he went to school, how he was discovered; I've watched practically every tribute video for him, read every article. I...

Some people just don't get it. This is a note I found from my daughter on my computer desk as I was preparing to log into yet another James Dean web search:

"Mom -
I think the cup of psycho you have been drinking lately has completely overflowed. Please stop."

I AM psycho, but that is a whole other thing. James Dean once told someone, "I am well aware that there are those who think a net should be dropped over me." I know a few people who feel the same about me, besides my daughter, of course. If I let what people think dictate every move I make, I might as well just stand still and give them an easier target.

Okay. The other day I received "Boulevard of Broken Dreams, The Life, Times and Legend of James Dean" by Paul Alexander in the mail. I really did not want to have this book as part of my collection of James Dean memorabilia, because it supposedly takes the "was James Dean gay?" thing a bit over the edge. And you know how I feel about that!

But, I figured that, at the very least, I could get some new pictures of him that maybe I didn't have. I was not counting on the one I found while flipping through the book. It appears on page 284. My jaw hit the floor as I found myself staring at a fuzzy, somewhat out-of-focus photo of (supposedly) a young James Dean in the branches of a tree, STARK NAKED (!!!) and holding his erect penis!!! I was (and still am) dumbstruck!

Now, I had heard that this photo was floating around out there somewhere, but I was completely unprepared to find it staring back at me from the pages of a book I now owned.

I quickly flipped to the credits at the back of the book to see who had provided the author with this photo, because I had read on other websites that it was in an art gallery for about a minute before someone...

You were something
I was not
You were cool, you were hot
You had talent, you had style
And you had a killer smile!

Mercurial, impolite, a giant, a rebel
A work in progress, an unpolished pebble
A dreamer, a charmer, a restless soul
How much we loved you, you'll never know

You were gone before you had the chance
To prove your worth, to dance the dance
Yes, you were something, everything
Still, time has not erased the sting

The years crawled by
We lived, we cried (some committed suicide)
And I was something you were not
I was 25

Was James Dean gay? He never admitted it, except to say, rather enigmatically, "I am certainly not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back."

Based solely on this statement, and the secret hopes of many a smitten homosexual male, one would have to assume that this was the case. I say, "HOGWASH!" (Actually, I say something much stronger, but this is a family show).

James Dean was NOT gay. Sure, he may have dabbled a bit, but just because you know how to swim, it doesn't make you an Olympic Gold medalist. The only reason gay people say James Dean was gay is that they WISH he was. There is not a true Dean fan on Earth who hasn't looked at him and thought, "I would do him".

Anyone who has done any reading on James Dean's life (I have), most surely know of his unwillingness to conform to anyone's expectations of him. He knew what his goal was and he went after it regardless of the fallout.

Much has been written about this aspect of his life, probably because it was never really resolved. There was no clear "Yes" or "No" answer to the question. Somehow I get the distinct impression that James Dean relished in this...
