Before Voyager - Chapter One: The Ambush

In another time line Janeway and Chakotay met before Voyager.

Summary --This fan fiction takes place during the events that followed Cal Hudson's mission as first attaché to the Federation colonies in the DMZ
Hudson's assignment was to help the Maquis colonists function under the terms of the new treaty. A treaty that was essentially imbalanced in favor of Cardassia.
Soon Cal turned away from Starfleet and led the Maquis. Michael Eddington, Rebecca, Chakotay, Ro Lauren,among others, were part of Hudson's Maquis group.

In the eyes of the Maquis, the Federation had abandoned them. So they decided to stand up to the Cardassians, and the Federation.

Jean- Luc Picard requested a complete investigation after Benjamin Maxwell's incident -- Maxwell attacked and destroyed an unarmed Cardassian science station ---


First science officer Kathryn Janeway was sent there to conduct part of the investigation.




However her shuttlecraft crashed. Luckly she managed to land it. Needless to say she was found by a small group of rebels led by no other than the another time Lt. Commander Calvin Hudson

--------------- Chapter One -----------------






Cal - "Who the hell are you?"

Janeway - "I could ask you the same"



Cal - "Listen.There is no need for arms here. I'm just an old man, and mean no harm. Look I'm unarmed, so you better put that phaser down"

Janeway - " I'll do as you say, but first you have to tell me who you are. I do not trust any strangers... in unfamiliar places"

Carl - "I promise I'll tell you everything, but we'd better be going before the Cardassian patrols find us. We need to reach my hiding place. My people will protect us. Let's move"


It was a route with many turns, hard to remember....

Then they went deep into a cave when suddenly a group of Cardies appeared from nowhere.There was nothing left to do. They were going to be held prisoners...if not executed.

It was then when Cal realized they were not alone. Michael, Rebecca, and other Maquis had been captured as well.



Rebecca (tears in her face)- "The Cardassians ambushed us, Cal. We have lost 3 men."

Cal (whispering)- "Nasty Cardassians.They will pay for their crimes. Some day. You'll see, Becca. "

Rebecca (whispering) - "The Cardies have caught almost everyone: my husband, Elizabeth, Ro, Kenneth...Yeah, everyone except for Chakotay's unit."

Cal - "Then everything is not lost"

Rebecca (whispering) - "Who's the girl?"

Janeway (whispering) - "I'm First Science Officer Kathryn Janeway."

Cal (whispering)- "I saw her shuttlecraft landing, and you know how curious this old man can be..."

Janeway (whispering) - "Starfleet has send me to investigate Maxwell's attack. I was supposed to reach the Cardassian science station Maxwell destroyed, but I lost main power and had no choice but to land here. What Maquis colony is this?"

Rebecca (whispering) - "This is..."

Cardassian guard (pushing back a lock from Rebecca's face) - "Feeling talkative? Need a friend?"

Michael (yelling) - " Keep your hands off her. You have heard me!Bloody Cardassian"

Cardassian guard -"Have you heard that? How you dare, you worm"

Some Cardassians began to beat Michael up.

Blood. Fear. Hate. You could sense the tension.


Chakotay - "You better stop beating my friend like that"

That was the first time Janeway saw Chakotay. He seemed to fear nothing, willing to end his own life right there, for a cause she failed to see.





A fight began, and Chakotay's unit fought like hell.
Michael Eddington and other Maquis managed to pick up some weapons and joined the party.



Meanwhile, Janeway tried to do her best. But nothing had prepared her for a situation like that. All those academy simulations seemed so superficial,forged, and absurd now.
Everthing was dantesque. People dying, bleeding, all was awful. And she got absorbed in such atrocity

"Are you okay?" - Chakotay caught her off guard.

She nodded.

"The Cardies are in retreat. You are safe now" - And then he left

This was the first time in all her Starfleet career that Janeway got paralyzed. Her first time in battle. And she wasn't satisfied with her own reactions.

Rebecca - "Let's go, Janeway"

She simply followed the others, engrossed in her thoughts.

Finally they reached the small Maquis village.
