Demi was mad at Sterling for coming back.
Sterling promised that she was the only one. It was too late for him to apologize. She wanted to tell him that it was over, but somehow she couldn’t bring herself to do this.
She tried to act like everything was okay. But both Sterling and Joe could see the truth in her eyes.
She had the desire to be loved. It was very natural. But she knew Sterling didn’t treat her right, that was the point when things weren’t even worth it anymore.
“Demi, I promise nothing happened. I’d dump Lilly for you in a heartbeat.” He told her in the way the unrealistic protagonist in a soap opera would say it. It was completely untrue. Demi rolled her eyes.
She was taking a break from her tour to have fun, this was all drama. She missed hanging out with the boys. Nick was so intense, but funny, Kevin was like her older brother, and Joe… well he was hilariously funny, sweet, and musically talented and passionate… Demi stopped herself because she was drifting off in front of Sterling. “You’ve promised things before; none of your promises have come true. And you didn't break up with her, I’m guessing the only reason you would is because she’s not a star.”
“No, that’s not why I chose her over you at first.”
“Then what’s the reason? Let me guess, she’s probably hotter than me, she’s got the perfect body and perfect height, and the perfect face. How am I supposed to compete with that?” She asked sarcastically.
“You don’t need to compete with her, She may be perfect… but you’ve got so much more.” He told her. Demi thought about the most special moments in her life, she realized that Sterling wasn’t involved in any of them.
“What?! Okay, you’re right. I don’t need to compete with her. You’re not even worth it.”
“Demi, I’m sorry. I’ll do anything if you would just take me back. You’re the only one for me.”
Demi couldn’t see a hint of honesty in his eyes. But his words seemed sincere. “How come whenever I told you ‘you’re the only one for me’ you wouldn’t take me seriously? Sterling, I want to believe you, but how can you explain why you cheated in the first place?”
Demi hadn’t felt this feeling for a long time - insecurity. She wanted to find the one guy that was actually meant for her. She’d be willing to wait her entire life if she knew the right guy would come along.
“I don’t know why I cheated! But I came back to you, isn’t that all that matters?” Sterling asked harshly.
Demi still didn’t know if Sterling was worth it. “No… I don’t want this to be over, I’ve thought about ending this, but I think about everything we’ve gone through and somehow… that keeps me from ending it. I mean, since the moment I met you, I loved you, but now-”
“But what?” Sterling was determined to get Demi back.
Sterling didn’t know how to let a girl say no obviously. “But now I don’t think I can be with you. And unlike you, I’ve actually thought about this. I hope you’re happy with Lilly.”
“Don’t say that Demi. I love you. Give me one more chance, I promise, Lilly‘s out of the picture from now on. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
“I doubt that.” Demi said. “As much as I’m afraid of giving you this chance, I’m gonna do it. But I’d better be the only one, I’m gonna have to end it for good if this happens again.”
“Okay, thank you, you’ll never hear her name again.” Demi could finally see what she’d been blind to. Sterling was pretending to be desperate, acting in the way who someone who really loved her might act.
Sterling wasn’t even close to being the one for her. Demi failed to see that obvious fact. But still, Demi wasn’t so thrilled to have Sterling back.
“I hope you’re right.” She said. Sterling came with her to meet the others. But she didn’t let him hold her hand, put his arm around her, and obviously she wouldn’t let him kiss her. Sterling didn’t care about that, he didn’t even care if she really loved him or not.
It was no surprise to two of the brothers that Sterling came with Demi.
Joe didn’t want Sterling anywhere near Demi after the way he treated her the night before. Joe knew how hard it would be to get to Demi at this rate. But it wasn’t impossible. Barely within his reach.
Demi didn’t feel happy about having Sterling with her. Sterling didn’t feel any different about being with Demi. At least he didn’t act that way…
Joe turned to Demi with a questioning expression, she responded with an apologetic smile.
Joe was hoping she’d realize that all Sterling was leading her to believe was a lie. That was the only way to make Demi his.
