Part4- The Beginning of Soccer
As Satsuki, Fubuki, and Atsuya walked out of the forest path that led out to a soccer field. The perimeter was mostly surrounded by trees, but far off there was a vacant road. Snow surrounded the soccer field.
Fubuki and Atsuya walked onto the field that was surprisingly cleared of snow. Atsuya set down the soccer ball he was holding and gestured to Satsuki to come over.
"Okay," Fubuki said,"The first thing we need to do is stretch."
After stretching, Fubuki and Atsuya felt that it was time to show Satsuki the true meaning of soccer.
The two boys first showed Satsuki how to kick a soccer ball back and forth between people, but as they began practicing this the three noticed that something wrong.
Each time one of the boys passed the ball to Satsuki, she would stop it like they showed her by using the inside of her foot, but when she attempted to kick it back, the ball would roll under her foot and make her fall to the ground.
"Come on Satsuki," she thought to herself, "You've kicked a ball before!"
But every time she tried to pass the ball, it would some how make her trip. As Fubuki and Atsuya watched this happen, they could tell that something was wrong, but decided to move on to another skill.
The three moved on to shooting. Fubuki placed the ball in the middle of the goal box in front of Satsuki. Atsuya thought Satsuki would do better this time since she was kicking with her toe and not the side of her foot, but Fubuki felt something strange in the atmosphere that made him uneasy.
After a few practice shots away from the goal, Satsuki tried kicking the ball into it. Before, when she was practicing without the goal, she was doing pretty good, but when she kicked the ball, meaning for it to go into the goal; at the last second her foot would turn and she would kick the ball the wrong way.
Left of the goal. Right of the goal. Every time she tried to kick the ball straight, her foot would make it change courses.
After awhile, Fubuki and Atsuya thought that she should take a little break. Satsuki didn't answer. "I can't take a break," she thought,"something is making mess up and I want to find out what!"
After a moment Satsuki had a new feeling; anger and frustration. In all of her life, Satsuki had never had this feeling. It felt strange and she didn't like it. Finally, after a long time, Fubuki came up to Satsuki and said that maybe she should try again another time. Another new feeling appeared inside Satsuki. Jealously and guilt.
During the practice, Fubuki and Atsuya were amazing. They could pass, shoot, at a really high speed, defend, a little too well for a five year old, and both could run at amazing speeds. Satsuki wanted to be apart of this, but she couldn't. She wasn't good enough.
All of a sudden the anger rushed down her body into her foot and then... BANG!!!! Satsuki kicked the ball in front of her as hard as she could sending it flying straight into the forest. With a sigh Satsuki said sorry to Fubuki and Atsuya and said that she'd go get the ball.
Fubuki and Atsuya looked at each other with worried expressions. They didn't understand why Satsuki had had so much trouble with the drills. But as they watched her slowly disappear into the forest they new that something was going to happen.
----------------------------------------
Considering it was morning, the forest was dark. Many times Satsuki would trip on tree roots and rocks, but she would take little notice of it. She was sad.
"How can I play soccer if I can't even kick the ball right or even kick it," Satsuki whispered to herself,"As much as I want to play I can't. I just keep embarrassing myself in front the two best five year old soccer players in the world!!!"
She couldn't take it anymore. Fubuki and Atsuya were trying their hardest to teach her soccer and all she was doing was messing everything up. After another five minutes of searching, Satsuki gave up. She knew that she couldn't go back without the ball so she just thought it was best to go back home and never see Fubuki and Atsuya again.
She whispered a silent sorry, for putting in a lot of trouble, a thank you, for making her feel needed even if it was for a short while, attempting to teach her soccer, and a goodbye. Then, she knelt down on the snowy forest floor and wept.
After a while, Satsuki stood and turned to find her way home, but before she started walking, she saw a light. As she got closer, she found that it was the soccer ball that she had kicked into the forest.
"I can't believe I kicked it this far in here," she thought.
As she got down to pick it up, the ball started to glow and a voice started talking to her.
"Kaminari Satsuki," the voice said.
"Hai?" asked Satsuki in a curious tone.
"Are you sure you want to begin your path in soccer?"
"Who are you?" Satsuki demanded,"You're the one that keeps messing with me while I was practicing!" She turned around every which way to find someone, but no one was there.
"I am your kokorro and I am not the one controlling your actions, you are."
"Huh?" Satsuki was confused.
"You haven't fully decided if you want to take soccer further in your life," her kokorro explained.
Satsuki was surprised,"But I do want to take it further! I know deep down I want to!" She took a deep breath and calmed down. "Fubuki and Atsuya have been so nice to me. They've taught me how to feel needed again. Around them I never feel lonely. Even though it's been one day, I feel like I've been with them forever and that's how I want the rest of my life to be."
"Tanoshii toki to kannashii toki mo?" her kokorro asked.
"Hai!" Satsuki said with a grin,"Korekara itsumo isho!"
Satsuki's heart seemed to laugh. "Then this is the beginning of your soccer." and then the voice disappeared.
Atsuya sat upside-down on the bench and yawned. "Maybe we should go find her..."
Just when Fubuki was about to agree, Satsuki emerged from the forest carrying the soccer ball she had kicked into it. Something about Satsuki had changed. In fact, she looked like she was glowing, inside and out.
As satsuki reached the twins, she walked past them and stood ten feet away from the goal. She kicked the ball up, bounced it on each knee a couple of times, let it drop to the ground and kicked it towards the goal. And she made her first shot!
