That is an excerpt from the forward provided by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse for the official LOST Encyclopedia. I happen to own that glorious book and I thought I'd take a minute and share with you the parts that included Skate.

[i]Both killers, criminals, and con artists, Kate and Sawyer were kindred spirits, which is why Kate felt more comfortable in her own skin around Sawyer. She wasn't ashamed of her past with James, because she saw herself in his eyes. While she was often offended by his piggish demands, like a kiss in exchange for Shannon's medicine; or selfish actions, like hoarding supplies from the plane, she could still see his true heart despite his often pathetic actions.

Sawyer and Kate graced us with so many great quotes, ranging from funny to romantic to downright heartbreaking. I thought I'd take it upon myself to compile them all in one place.

Season One

Kate: "You decided to join us."
Sawyer: "I'm a complex guy, sweetheart."

[everyone but Sawyer runs from the polar bear]
Kate: "Sawyer!" [turns to run back to him]
Sayid: "Let him go!"

Sawyer: "I know your type."
Kate: "I'm not so sure."
Sawyer: "Yeah, I know girls like you."
Kate: "Not girls exactly like me."

Sawyer: "It's about time."
Kate: "For what?"
Sawyer: "I made this birthday wish four years ago."

Sawyer: "Are you going with the pessimists? Or staying here waiting for the rescue boats?"
Kate: "Are you going?"
Sawyer: "Well that's the real trick isn't it? We all pack up, stay at the caves, next day a plane passes by... they're gonna go on their merry way and be none the wiser. On the other hand, stay here... get eaten by boars, fall off a rock, not gonna be anyone around to answer that 911 call."

Damon: Kate is raising Claire's son, Aaron, as her own. She knows that Claire, who was Aaron's mother, is now gone, and the only way that she can protect Aaron is to say he is hers. And we later realize, emotionally, Kate's still reeling from Sawyer's decision to jump off the helicopter. This man that she really loved left her, abandoned her, decided to stay behind on the island. She's trying to heal the emotional scar left by Sawyer taking himself out of the equation.

Carlton: Our characters have these encounters with things that that took place in the island's past and none is any more significant than Sawyer wandering through the jungle and seeing Kate helping Claire give birth. This is an incredibly powerful, emotional moment for him.

Damon: Kate doesn't realize she's replacing the wound left by Sawyer with Aaron. Ironically it's pointed out to her by an ex-girlfriend of Sawyer.

Damon: Sawyer and Juliet get along great. There's none of the sort of emotional fireworks that existed between him and Kate. But now Kate's back, and as soon as they see each other that chemistry just locks in for both of them.
