Here is my problem with the idea that Katherine is indifferent to Damon; you (used as a generalization) might be able to say that Katherine plays games with him just because she likes his reactions and lusts after him because she can’t have him, but if you compare her relationships with Mason/Stefan to hers with Damon, you can see obvious differences – ones that say more about what Kat’s feeling.

Because SK and DK are compared to death, I’ll start with Mason.

Like her relationship with Damon, Katherine doesn’t (well, can’t) compel Mason, so his love for her seems legitimate. However, Katherine is just using him/their relationship to prepare for the sacrifice. (With Damon, there is no clear reason to use him, so…that’s out of the question. The most she could have used him for was sex…and I wouldn’t blame her.) When Damon tells Katherine that Mason is dead, Katherine is miffed. And, that’s not an exaggeration either, because she comes right back with Plans B, C, and D. She didn’t really care, IMO. Whereas, with Damon, the idea of him dying has Katherine looking shocked, trying to explain herself to him, and basically asking for...

So many reasons I don’t understand/like this couple and I’ve written a lot about this in other places, but now it’s in my Tumblr rants. Peace :)

In 1864, Stefan didn’t really know who Katherine was. He didn’t know she was a killer, that she manipulated he and his brother, whether it was in the purpose of taking away a person’s judgment or just having her cake and eating it too. If he didn’t know about Katherine’s flaws, how could he be in love with her? How could he know she was an angel, or anything, for that matter, when he was shielded from it all?

I know people have said that the reason Katherine was in love with Stefan was that she was an “angel” as a human and he saw that in her, but I have to point out exactly who she is behind closed doors. No one is perfect – and I’ve met some pretty angelic people – and I don’t hold Katherine to the standards that many hold Elena to. That said, Katherine is not an angel by any sense of the word. She has flaws (and I think they’re damn brilliant, honestly) and those flaws are apart of who she is now. Why in the world would you want a relationship with someone that will...

I’ve heard quite a bit about Katherine only wanting Damon for the challenge – and, I’ll admit, Katherine likes playing games with Damon a lot more now that he gives as good as he’s getting – but I see some…not-so-crackfic changes in Katherine’s behavior that, to me, say a bit more.

Looking at Katherine in 2x01 – 2x17, you can easily see that Katherine always has a plan to save herself, and that plan comes before anything and everything. She taunts Damon, insults him, mocks him – anything she can do to get a bad reaction and get him to believe she’s telling the truth. Now, a few of us, as DK shippers, have had our own (sometimes far-fetched) theories as to why she does this and what, logically speaking, these behaviors might be motivated from, but, in all truth, the illogical aspects of a character’s motivations are never really clear until fans pick them apart until there’s nothing left.

The most we can do is work with what we know is factual, and can be proven. Anything else is theory.
