Here is my problem with the idea that Katherine is indifferent to Damon; you (used as a generalization) might be able to say that Katherine plays games with him just because she likes his reactions and lusts after him because she can’t have him, but if you compare her relationships with Mason/Stefan to hers with Damon, you can see obvious differences – ones that say more about what Kat’s feeling.
Because SK and DK are compared to death, I’ll start with Mason.
Like her relationship with Damon, Katherine doesn’t (well, can’t) compel Mason, so his love for her seems legitimate. However, Katherine is just using him/their relationship to prepare for the sacrifice. (With Damon, there is no clear reason to use him, so…that’s out of the question. The most she could have used him for was sex…and I wouldn’t blame her.) When Damon tells Katherine that Mason is dead, Katherine is miffed. And, that’s not an exaggeration either, because she comes right back with Plans B, C, and D. She didn’t really care, IMO.
