You wouldn't be confused if you'd accept the fact Disney has given us: that Kopa never existed in the movies. Never. Disney has pointed it out in at least three (3) different ways.
Kovu is actually a few months older than Kiara. Because he was born during Scar's reign.
This is an impossible topic to discuss with any logic, if discussed in regards to the sequel. Because the sequel's creators did not include Kopa in their story, they did not leave ANY room for his birth and aging in their timeline.
Therefore, if you must force Kopa into the movies, the only and I mean ONLY even slightly logical place for him would be that he was born after the end of the second movie, as in to be some two or three years younger than Kiara, Vitani and Kovu. But Disney's own storyline should be re-written because the books claim Kopa's the future ruler while the movies say it's Kiara and Kovu.
So, yeah. Kopa never existed in the movies and if you want to force him into its storyline, the only in any way logic point would be after both of the movies' events with tons of additional storyline to twist the original to suit added character. And even then there would always be the illogicness of why would Kopa have been presented at the end of the first movie when Kiara was the first born and so long before Kopa.
In short; If Kopa was to be added into the movies' storyline, he would need to be two or three years younger than Kiara, born after the second movie's ending.
