We're all familar to Naruto, right? The story of the blonde haired boy with destructive powers inside of him. Well, I am going to rant about one of the characters from Naruto, the brown haired, red fang tattooed dog-boy, Kiba Inuzuka!
First, let me say, I LOVE KIBA!!!
He's my favorite in Naruto but I've found that his being is not really original. Let me explain;
'Kiba' means 'fang', which relates to dogs and wolves. It can also be divided up into 'Ki-ba' which means 'spiritual place' as indicated in the anime Kiba. It's a wolf-y term that is popular with dog-akin characters, not to mention that 'Inuzuka' means 'dog of the small hill'.
The red marks on Kiba's face aren't very original either. They're red fang tattoos that symbolize that he is from the Inuzuka clan, but that's not to say they haven't been used before in another anime (movie) called Princess Mononke, where San, the young girl adopted by wolves has the same red tattoos. Not to mention she also rides on a huge white wolf.
Okay, now, what about an even more simular Kiba-like character. His name is Kiba (go figure), and he can transform himself into (you guessed it) a white wolf.
It's not just his name or the fact that he can turn into a wolf -or rather, the other way around- but he looks like Kiba too...I mean, Inuzuka...They both have shaggy brown hair and the same grey jackets look good on both of them. Both Kiba's personalities are close match too: they are both incredibly loyal to their friends and can take down anyone in a fight with a smirk on their face. Wolf's Rain (yet another wolf-ish term) the anime from which the non-Inuzuka Kiba hails transcribes a lot in the animal department, particularly wolves for that matter.
But where oh, where, did Kishimoto~sensei actually derive Kiba Inuzuka from? The answer: Nansō Satomi Hakkenden.
No, it's not anime, but rather a book (or...series of books) written by Kyokutei Bakin. The books themselves (ten total and all in Japanese) are about eight samarai brothers who appear to be dog-ish and are also known as the eight dog brothers. An OVA anime series called The Hakkenden was also created and was made in attempt to recreate these olden stories. Not surprisingly, the first of the eight brother's name is Inuzuka.
So, did anyone else kinda realize that the big white puppy dog and red tattooed fangs as well as wolf-ish names repeat in certain places? Not that it's a bad thing, but it's certainly made a name for itself.
Conclusion? Uh...well, Kiba isn't exactly original, and there are lots of dog-ish and wolf-y anime characters and books out there that may or may not have asserted themselves into Kiba's creation. But there is one thing I know for sure; I LOVE KIBA!!!! (oh, and Akamaru)

This has been the first of probably many rants.
