Deep rays from the sun burned the surface of the earth, almost cooking it alive. Clouds hung around it, threatening to cover it up before flames appear. I say below the sun, watching it fall beneath a hill. Bright yellow rays turned to a lovely orange. Reassured, the clouds floated away quickly. Two girls sat beside me, gazing at the falling sun like I was. They exchanged happy glances with each other. It's rare for us to be able to take a break and relax. But the city of Menua was very quiet for once. Usually it was full of activity, which meant we five girls had to watch out for any dangers. Of course, it was only the usual stuff; burglars, robbery, killers, and even people who tried to kill themselves. Daily things like that were easy for us. As wolves, we were strong, mean, and had lots of courage. We didn't get scared easily; maybe if a comrade died or if someone was able to hurt us that was only human. We may look human, but everyone knows us for at least six years. Being half-wolf, half-human, we were known as guardians of the city. I however, was no ordinary wolf. I was leader of the Pack of Fangs, a pack that has lived as long as the humans. Under my care for ten years, the pack has lived on and nothing could kill it. Now I glanced to my right, seeing one of my friends watching me. "Everything ok, Shadow?" she asked, shifting her eyes to two girls playing near the street. "I thought I told you already Alita, my name is Jane as human." I told her, getting up. With a quiet laugh the girl on my left side stood up with me. "She can't help it, we're all use to calling you that." her soft voice was barely heard as i looked at her. Shaking my head, I faced the girl with amusement. "Whether you're used to it or not, that name stands only as wolf, not human." I said sternly, watching my sister play catch with another girl. Quickly I called them over. "Whiteflower, Narina, get over here now." They came at once, noticing a car coming down the street. Like a race car, it was racing down the street without stopping. Glad to be on the sidewalk, I waited for it to pass. Unfortunately, the feeling didn't last that long, for a small girl had seen us and was running into the street. Alita gasped in fear and tried to go help her, but I pushed her aside. Fear was the last thing on my mind as I lunged for the girl in my wolf form. Her deep green eyes leaped out of her head when she saw the car. By the time she noticed me, I had already grabbed the back of her shirt and gave a huge tug to pull her back. pain crackled at my right hind leg as the car sped by, but I didn't care. The last thing i heard as I crashed was my sister's voice. "Jane!"
