Chapter Two: Mikado, Mikado


Mikado groaned, tugging on the blanket to cover his face. The artificial light was burning his eyes, his head throbbing. It felt like every single muscle had been touched by fire. What happened to him? He searched for a memory, anything to explain, but came up blank.

Until he heard a gasped, "Mikado!"

"K-Kida? What are you doing in my house?" He coughed, clearing his throat - there was a layer of film making his squeaky voice come out raspy. How long had he been asleep? And how long had Kida been with him? He caught the glimpse of fingers...

Mikado is in the middle of a discussion on the state of the Yellow Scarves with Kanra-san and Setton-san when his phone rings. He tugs it out of his pocket and checks the caller ID, smiles when he sees Masaomi's name.

"Hello," he says, but receives no answer. "…Masaomi?" he tries again.

He hears, faintly, panting, as if the phone is far away from his friend. He suddenly feels a rush of panic in his veins; what if Kida's been… kidnapped or something? What if he's tied up and he's trying to call Mikado and —

"F-fuck," he hears Kida say, "yes...

"You're right, Masaomi," Mikado said, lying back on the grassy hill. "The park is nice at this time of day."

Masaomi smiled. Seeing Mikado so relaxed was reassuring. Yes, he'd suggested Mikado come to Ikebukuro, but now that he was here, Masaomi never wanted him to get caught up in the city's dark side. In a few short hours, this park would be crawling with color gangs.

For right now, though, it had a great view and tons of sun. He looked over; Mikado's eyes were shut, but he was still smiling. Lying next to Mikado on the grass was all Masaomi wanted...

"That's not funny." His voice ended in a whine. He hated when Kida said his name like that. It always sounded so childish.

Mikado had always been sensitive to touch, tickling being no exception. Tears started to bud in his eyes, he started laughing so hard his stomach clenched, and he flailed, almost whacking Kida in the face and the gut several times, only missing because...

"Mikado! I'm here!~" A voice called to Mikado from outside his door. Before he could even respond, the door swung open and his boyfriend walked in. "Oh hi Masaomi."

Masaomi Kida plopped his overnight bags on the floor next to Mikado's bed and ran over to give him a big hug. "Ahh, Mikado, I missed you so much!" he said.

"Masaomi, you saw me yesterday."

"Yes, and I went a very long twenty-four hours without seeing your face. It was terrible." Kida looked up at Mikado with huge over-dramatic, angsty eyes. "I was in a state of utter dispair! So lonely, so lonely!"
