In the music industry these days it seems that looks is a must if you want to be someone. I don't know of any downright ugly mainstream celebrities.
It's much like food. If it looks unpleasant you don't want any, unless you already know it is good.
If you look up 'Susan Boyle' from the 'Britains Got talent' show then you'll see how her less than perfect looks had her at a disadvantage before she even began singing.

It's because looks is what makes the dough. I honestly don't believe they care about talent as much as looks because of course they can just auto-tune the voice. The artist's look is what sells the records, brings in the tour tickets, and makes the money come in like crazy. It's quite sad really, because I plan on trying to make it in the music industry and I really don't want to be judged on just my looks because I already know I'm not the prettiest girl in the world.

And by most of this comment, I basically mean pop singers. But I noticed a few "rock" bands recently that were new that sucked ass but the lead singer of one wasn't all that bad looking. Back then, it didn't matter what you looked like. All that mattered was that you had the talent. It's just not like that anymore. *Sighs*

Sadly I always wanted to be a singer and I think i'm ugly. :(
Iv'e been called ugly many times before. But I can't help the way I look. I wish people would look on the inside rather than the outside. :(

It is definitely about looks and also WHO you know nowadays. Rather than talent. That is the main reason I hate Pop. It makes me feel sick how pathetic and shallow our society has become.

And there are that many reality shows (Well, I am not sure about everywhere else, but that is all that there is on Australian T.V) and it is like everyone has the mentality that if they can sing, they are going to be a famous singer! I can't stand it! >:(

I don't think any of the artists that are going up nowadays have 'talent.' They sing the same- their genres are same- they put nothing new out for us. They're not doing anything for music. They're not doing something worth remembering. Music is all about freedom and expression. The artists nowadays play it so safe that it seems hard to call what they make 'music.'

Plus, look at them. Lady GaGa? Katy Perry? Ke$ha? Jason Derulo? Yeah, they're all 'pretty' people but do they have any talent? No, not in my opinion.

ive put coincidence because its the closest to the correct answer, most singers are good looking because this builds up their confidence which allows them to 1. discover their talent 2. be confident enough to showcase their talent 3. it gives them a better voice because they do not tremble when they sing 4. the confidence allows them to be able to handle publicity better thats all there is to it

I've decided on an answer.

It's very possible to make a person "pretty", if they weren't already, with hair extensions, lots of makeup, fake teeth (like many artists), and in some cases, cosmetic surgery.

I find it a very shallow thing, but it's true.. I mean I always wanted to be a singer.. But I dont think I would make it, just for the simple fact tht I think im too ugly to make it! I wish they had more shows like American Idol because on there they dont really care what u look like.. Its how u sing that gets u through it! :)

Especially in Disney. The Disney Channel motto now is basically "She's cute, she's hired".

American idol like shows wouldn't he.

There was a news story about a local woman who made in to Hollywood. She made it all the way to the final elimination before the final 12, but she didn't get any air-time at all because she wasn't as attractive as the other contestants.
