A ninja or shinobi (忍者 or 忍び?) was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat.
In his Buke Myōmokushō, military historian Hanawa Hokinoichi writes of the ninja:
“ They travelled in disguise to other territories to judge the situation of...
"wind rushing, leaves rustle and the cherry blossoms zoom past"
"the night sky, ever so black and pale from moonlight, is suddenly interrupted by a lightning fast blur"
"a metallic flash inturupts your vision, and something zooms right past you"
"you feel the hair on your left arm is cut off"
"you turn to see what is is, but it was gone as soon as it appeared"
"the memorie of what you just saw only seems like a hazy blur"
"you know it is a warning, but whoever had given it to you is gone"
