Graham's death was one of the most heart-breaking moments on OUAT. After watching the finale, I found it even more so, and though I’ve always felt that he deserved a happy ending, I now believe it more firmly than ever.
Let’s take a look at his life. He was abandoned to the wolves by this own parents. It is never revealed what age he was then or if he was even old enough for him to remember his parents when he got older. That is enough to make anyone bitter. Yet, he had a sense of honor that he apparently learned from the wolves.
Then one day, he gets sent by the Evil Queen to kill Snow White. While he initially agrees to this “assignment,” he quickly changes his mind when he reads her letter to the queen. We can see tears in his eyes as he reads. He knows that his girl does not deserve death, and not thinking of what might happen to him as a consequence, he spares Snow’s life and lets her go.
He could have run. He could have tried to save himself, but he didn’t. Instead he went back to the queen’s palace. He wanted to make sure that Snow would be safe. And he had his heart taken as a result. Not only that, but he also became the queen’s male sex-slave.
Then later, he helps Charming escape from the palace. He did so, knowing full well what the Evil Queen would do to him if she ever found out that he helped Charming.
Then came the curse. He forgot who he was, he forgot everything and for 28 years he is stuck in a loveless physical relationship with the person responsible. Then Emma came to town.
He starts to realize how miserable he is and after kissing Emma, he starts to get his memory back. He finally breaks up with Regina and gets his memory entirely back. He was one moment of happiness with Emma…one moment (and probably the first in his life) and then he has his heart crushed and he dies.
If anyone deserves some happiness, it’s Graham. He saved both of Emma’s parents’ lives without any regard to his own. He is a good, honorable man who has lived a life of misery. He needs to come back. He needs a happy ending!
