The next day, Janis had a test in her history class. She didn't feel good about it, because she felt that she couldn't concentrate. She kept thinking about Shadow and how much she missed him. She managed to finish. After the tests were graded, her teacher asked to see her after class. Janis asked, "Am I in trouble?" The teacher replied, "No, you're not it trouble, Janis. I just want to ask you something." Janis said, "Okay." The teacher held up the test, showed that Janis barely passed, and asked, "Is everything okay with you?" Janis said, "Yes." The teacher said, "When we reviewed yesterday, you really knew the material." Janis said, "I'm just sad. That's all." The teacher asked, "Is it anything I can help with?" Janis said, "No, I don't think you'd understand." The teacher said, "Try me." Janis opened up about losing her dog. The teacher said, "I'm sorry to hear that. I know what you're going through. I lost my dog a couple of years ago." Janis said, "Thanks for understanding." During lunch, Janis's friend, Kelsey, said, "You've been quiet all day. Is something wrong?" Janis said, "I lost my dog, Shadow, yesterday." Kelsey said, "Oh, no. How did it happen?" Janis explained what happened. Kelsey hugged her and said, "I'm sorry about your dog. I hope good things will come your way soon." Janis said, "Thank you." On the way home, Janis talked with her best friend, Simon. He asked, "How are you doing, Janis?" She said, "I'm doing okay. I just don't feel like myself. Grieving is exhausting." He said, "Maybe you should get some rest." She asked, "Do you think it will help?" He said, "I think so." When she made it hope, she took a nap for a while. After that, her remaining dogs, Stevie and Juneau, roused her up, wanting to play. She said, "All right, girls. We'll go out to play." Later that night, when Janis went to bed, Stevie and Juneau wanted to be in her bedroom with her. She let them in, and they slept on the floor. She didn't cry that night, and their presence helped her sleep better.
