The members of The Devil Wants Peace had returned from their thirtieth anniversary tour. John was heading into his house when he got a call from Caryn. She said, "Hello, dear. Did you make it back home okay?" He said, "Yes, I did. I just pulled into the driveway." She said, "That sounds great. Would you like to come over to my house tomorrow?" He said, "My mates and I are supposed to meet at the recording studio tomorrow. We wrote some new songs on the tour bus. I'll be happy to come to your house as soon as we're finished." She said, "Great. Let me know where you're done, and I'll pick you up." He said, "All right. That sounds good." She said, "This will be great. I'll cook a meal for you, and I have a pool in the backyard." John froze. He then managed to say, "Um, okay." Caryn noticed John's unenthusiastic tone. She said, "Is something wrong, John?" He said, "I'm just a little tired. That's all." She said, "You must be tired. Get some rest, okay?" He said, "I will. Goodnight, Caryn." She said, "Goodnight, John." After he hung up, John got ready for bed. He looked at his dog, Thunder, and said, "Oh, Thunder, I don't know what to do. Caryn can't know that I'm scared of water." Thunder tilted his head. John said, "I wish you could talk. You could tell me what to do." He tossed and turned before he finally settled down to sleep.
The first day of spring was approaching. Leila and Greeley were on Spring Break. Leila said, "It doesn't seem possible that we're going to be finished with our first year of college in less than two months." He said, "I know." She said, "It's also hard to believe that my dog, Paul, is not a puppy anymore. He's fully grown." Greeley said, "They grow up very quickly." She said, "They really do. I also can't believe that my birthday is coming up. It's the first day of spring this year, March 20. I'm going to be eighteen." Greeley said, "Happy Birthday." She said, "Thank you." Knowing that she had friends that she didn't have to say "I thought we were friends" to gave Leila comfort. She also knew that she didn't have to have a romantic relationship to complete her. She has and supportive aunt and uncle and great friends. Because of that, she's not lonely at all.
