Now, the special effects in the movies can be created on virtual sets arranged in your studio with knowledge of green screen technique. Green screen video editing software is available for fine tuning the scenes shot on these temporary sets. Some of the scenes in the latest movie ‘The Great Gatsby’ have been shot using green screen technique only. Let’s see how this technique can help you in creating special effects in movies.

Suppose you want to shoot a scene showing earlier era or at a place which does not exist now. What you will do? Again you have green screen technique. You can shoot the whole scene arranging a virtual set. Behind the set, hang green photography backdrops. Create an image digitally to be superimposed behind the scene.

Now suppose the demand of the film is such that the scene is to be shot in front of some lavish mansion. As you know, there are only a limited number of mansions across the globe. Some of them might be earlier used in other films. Some of them might be very far away from your place. For arranging a scene at one of those mansions, it would cost you very high. You will have to take necessary permissions from the...

In chroma key technique, both paper and muslin photography backdrops can be used. However, when using paper backgrounds, you may suffer from the following problems: -

1. Gets dirty – At the time of shooting, the backdrops can get dirty easily. And when the paper backdrops get dirty, they cannot be cleaned. You will have to throw away the parts which are dirty.
2. Gets creased – The paper backgrounds easily get creases. When the backgrounds get creases, they become useless for shooting and have to be thrown away. The creases cause shadows, which make editing of photos and videos later. Thus, you need a smooth background for shooting so that it does not bend down.
3. Costs high – Since the paper backgrounds get creased or dirty easily, these have to be bought new every time you have to shoot. Thus, cost becomes high as compared to other types of backgrounds such as muslin. Also its cost of shipping is higher than its muslin counterpart.
4. Heavy and difficult to store – The chromakey backdrops made of paper have to be stored in rolls. These rolls become very heavy and difficult to store and transport, especially if the rolls are more than 2m...

Though the chroma key technique has been in use for a long time in film making field, but its use in professional photography is new. The issues found while applying this technique in photography are different from those found in video making. In this article, you will find the information related to use of chroma key in photography.

Blue or Green Background? What Else?

Earlier, blue was used as the screen background. To be successful, only blue had to be used. The reason is the chroma key software was coded for specific color only. But this is not the case with present day software. You can use any solid color as your screen background. The only exception in this is when you have to photograph people. In this case, you have to use blue or green backgrounds. Why? Other colors are not suitable to use for humans as the subject. Yellow and red are present in skin tones; gray, black or white are in shadows and highlights. So, we left with blue & green only.

In the earlier times, the photos were clicked in front of the painted backdrops showing trees or park or anything else. It didn’t give real effects. To give real effect, the photos had to be taken at actual locations. This was very difficult, as the photographer had to move to outside locations and set up his equipment like umbrellas, lights and all. Nowadays, real effect can be given to the photos without moving to actual outside locations. For this, the photographers nowadays have digital cameras & green screen kit. This kit is employed in photography using green screen technique.

Green screen technique is a great technique which is available for use not only by professional photographers but also by amateur photographers. Using this technique, one can expect great outcome but only if right quality kit having right green / blue background is used. One should try to set up the kit with minimum possible imperfection, adjust lighting on the subject and the background, and use chroma key software (green screen software) properly.

In chroma key technique, lighting is the most important aspect to consider for bringing realism to the videos. The technique is simple to apply, but the lighting is tricky.

When lighting some scene in chroma key technique, there are some points which are needed to be kept in mind. Firstly, light will reflect back the screen color (green, blue or any other) on the actor. So, move the actor far from the screen as much as possible. Secondly, light the background evenly. For this, use lighting kit which offers diffused and even light. There should not be any hotspots or shadows on the screen.

The above points help you to create a clean chroma key, but this is only half of the total effort required. Another issue is to make the scene look real. For this, you need to carefully study the digital video background you have to use after removing green background. Consider these questions – Is it morning, afternoon, evening or night? Is it outdoor scene or indoor scene? What type of light is it – dark, soft or bright? What the mood of the scene is? Is the background moving? If it is moving, in which direction it moves? Is there any need...

There are some basic tips when taking a green screen video shoot. Let’s discuss those tips.

1. Get everybody on board with background before shoot – It can be quite difficult, but it’s important to get everybody aware of how the background will appear. Get feedback from the decision makers involved in the shoot. This will reduce time wastage during post-production phase. The time can be wasted in uploading, downloading and re-uploading.

2. Demand for branding strategy early – If the shoot is to be done for some organization, ask them what can be done and cannot be done with organization’s branding logo and designs. Find out what colors can be / cannot be used. Request all the guidelines well on time.

3. Send storyboard to everyone involved in the shoot – Ensure that everyone knows how the background will look like. The clients might not enjoy surprise if they see some unexpected background at the end. Create storyboard to show how the subjects will be appearing on the background.

Green screen backdrop is being used by almost all TV networks throughout the world. Using green screens at the background when a TV series is being shot is one part of the technique and has become very common. Another part of chroma key technology deals with removal of background pictures of the shot & replacement of those photos with other image backgrounds. Let’s take an example – a broadcaster, reading out weather report, is being shot in front of a chroma key green screen. When the viewers watch the weather report, the green screen is replaced with weather map or any other image suiting the report.

Chroma Key technology can use a green screen muslin cloth or green paint to make a suitable space which can be shot against. Usually, the professional green screen studios are rooms painted green. Using green muslin backdrop or paint has some benefits. Which is the best depends upon the budget and circumstances.
