It is instinctual to utter the name Edgar Allan Poe in the midst of forming an image of uncontrollable moodiness filled with grotesque, nebulous beauty. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. A master of the macabre, he was the founder of the science fiction and mystery genre in literature. He wrote everything from literary criticism, to horror, poetry, a novel, short-stories and hundreds of essays. Today he is labeled the “Father of the Detective Story.”

Although Poe made a small earning from his literature, his income was acquired by writing literary criticism; he was known for his brutal reviews. In the late 1830s, he published Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, a collection of stories, which were profoundly disturbing to the public. Unorthodoxly written in first narrative for his time, his stories contained content of using opium and the terror of ghosts, which propelled Poe’s audience to believe he was disproportionally strange, wicked, disturbed, and drugged induced.
