"This is the internet, deal with it." Why is this the common excuse for acting like a douche on here?

What's the deal with the common excuse for acting like a prick being "this is the internet"? I don't get it, should I let it slide because it's on the internet? I mean, if I don't have to take it outside the internet, I shouldn't have to take sh!t online either.

Just now someone PM'ed me telling me I've gone a too far with stating my opinion (I'm one of lesser blunt people on Fanpop, mind you), and I got cursed out. I'm a nice guy, so I told her to simmer down, and of course, her excuse was "stop crying, this is the internet, you will meet terrible people". You meet those in real life too, and surely we'd all like an apology from that person who badmouths us. Me no comprende.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish we could reason with them, I've tried, and it's impossible. They do not operate within the realms of logic, apparently, 'cuz I've really tried calmly explaining myself to several trolls, and it just leads to verbal assaults, which then would get me frustrated. It used to be hard for me to deal with, but I've gotten a lot better at it once I realized this world is all they've got. It's the most obvious explanation! I'm sorry that happened to ya'. I know what it's like. And, no, it's not a good excuse...they do NOT make sense.

You acted like a prick and someone told you to deal with the Internet? Well, why don't you just ignore them? What did you do anyway?

Hahah, no, that's not what happened. I stated my opinion on a question, an placed a neat 'IMO' before it, you know, 'In My Opinion'. I got a few replies from that girl that she disagreed with me. Before I knew it, she PM'ed me telling me f@ck off because I don't know sh!t. In all politeness, I told her to simmer down, and she told me to "stop crying". As for as I now, I wasn't the prick here.

I know what IMO mean. Then the best reply would be "it's my opinion, deal with it and then walk away, apparently she's a jerk who has no life and she act like this on the Internet because nobody likes her in real life, lol, people like that need to be ignored. I advice you to do that and move on.

*facepalm* That's not important. My point is that it is not an excuse for being an @sshole.

Cause people think it's much easier to talk to people like that in Internet life cause they think they can't get hurt but in fact they can, and that excuse is just a dumbass reply cause they have none and have no reason for being a bitch so they just say 'cause it's the internet' which is bullshit in itself

The only time I've used that excuse was to people I didn't like. Other than that I agree with you it's a stupid phrase. People shouldn't be using that phrase just to get away with insulting people for no reason.

Because that's the way everyone is on here, you don't expect people just to go without saying that do you?
I'd just accept what that person says because there's no use in fighting over it.
