I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I really want to know why some Americans go on about how USA is the greatest country in the world.

(Honestly, what is up with that? Why does there have to be a greatest country in the world, anyway?)

I often wonder that myself.
But then again, why does anyone go on about anything being the best thing in the world?
It's probably some sort of pride issue, people do tend to take pride to extremes like that by nature. Not to mention it's encouraged by the government.
But in some cases, like in the case of a certain someone I know, I think it's a cover to hide something more sinister, and justification for those sinister desires.
There are a number of reasons that people could give you for feeling conceit over a country, but considering that I wonder that myself I can only offer observations. Maybe there is no set reason either way.

Total ignorance on your part. That is all.

Your comment on "rednecks"... my gosh.

People enjoy living in America, what of it?
The only people who I have witnessed saying America is or has the greatest anything have been people who have been to different countries and they tend to admire the American govornment.

I'm not sure why so many people care about what books and movies and food comes from which countries, and how that possibly determines the rank of quality, but if that's all you base a country's worth on, you're easily pleased. Enjoy it.

Honestly, this is the just the kind of response I'd expect from you... Rude, uncalled for and in denial. This comment is the one that is ignorant, because you don't see it. I have heard plenty of people say that about the USA and not people from overseas... If you would like an example of this, then perhaps you should see the 'America' Facebook page and then you'll realise just how incorrect you actually are. As for your remark that I am totally ignorant, well, I laugh that off... Perhaps you should learn more about your country, instead of writing rubbish that shows just how misinformed you are.

That wasn't the response I was expecting... Honestly, I have seen and witnessed plenty of people saying that it is the greatest country in the world... My government doesn't rave on about the country - we Kiwis are actually very humble people, thank you very much. I don't think my country is that great.

I haven't seen or witnessed anyone say that. I have heard the president say things like "America is such a nice place to live, blah blah blah" (Idk I don't watch politics) and crap like that, but never "raving"? Americans don't "rave on" about our country, we just compliment it, and it would be a lie for you to say that your country doesn't do the same.

That's a stupid thing for anyone to say. America is far from the best in the world. I am an American, but I kinda like Japan more....

Reason 1: Godzilla
Reason 2: Anime
Reason 3: If anime was real, all the other countries would be thoroughly screwed!

Reason I am never going to Japan: Japanese Spider Crabs.

Now for a random video.

Not to say I'm not patriotic. I believe in the America described in the song. I ignore the country itself and believe in it's founding principles. One Nation Under God. This sounds weird to me though...I suck at explaining myself.

That oooorrrrr maybe most of us are just arrogant bastards.

Not actually that many people find their own country to be the best... I don't. Honestly, plenty of people would prefer to visit other countries and then live in them, rather than their own, they just often don't have the means to do so.

How very annoying.
I thnk honestly - they are disillusioned
Propaganda and Hype - some people believe anything.
America has fallen so far from being a leader in technologies or innovations... not to say that they do not have some very fine things, and have not...
but it is a rather self-pompous attitude to be a braggard no matter what country and in things justified by bragging rights or not. America has fallen below many many countries in education and it is nothing to brag about in these issues anymore... they just cling to and/or may be in denial. :(

That's just patriotism, and it happens in just about every country. For example, there are still people who think the Netherlands is the best country in the world.

Really? Because I have only really ever heard Americans say things like that... I didn't know that people felt that way about the Netherlands, too. I think patriotism is pointless, because all countries have their good points and their bad points.
blackpanther666 posted over a year ago

What I'm trying to say is; in every country you can find at least someone that has an undying love for their own country. May it be in America, the Netherlands, Australia, or whichever country you pick.
Bond_Of_Fury posted over a year ago

@blackpanther: "Patriotism is pointless".That's your opinion. I guess all emotions are pointless in that case. Patriotism is love and respect for one's country. If patriotism is pointless, then all emotions are pointless. Loving someone is pointless too. So, you don't have any emotions? 'Cause they are pointless too.
prophet69 posted over a year ago
*
@prophet. Patrioticism is NOT an emotion... If you think that, then you have been smoking something illegal. Patriotism is a concept, BASED around emotions, but not solely dependant on it. You can love and respect your country without being classified as 'patriotic'... That's the problem with all you young'uns these days... You think that if it exists, then it has to have a mainstream tag on it... Anyway, to bring myself to the actual point... I have seen too many people taking it WAY overboard and that is exactly why it is pointless... All it does is give people ammo to start going around telling people that they suck because their country isn't as good as theirs. Go figure.

I've never said anything like that before, but people may do it because we're "land of the free" "land of opportunity" yada yada yadah. People just think that makes them better than any place else. find it annoying as hell when people do that. People in my school make racist remarks then say "Atleast I'm American." I always just go "What the fuck is wrong with you?! It is not their faults that it is like that there why don't you go try it out and see how fortunate you are!"

@blackpanther666: Actually, America would never meddle in wars if there is no profit to be made. Therefore America only fights wars they have business in.

I don't have an answer, just what I hope is a somewhat amusing anecdote. My parents, who are not from the US, have nonetheless lived here for over 50 years, and they still can't figure Americans out. They raise the flag on holidays, but the whole rah-rah thing--I don't know. They raised me as if they were still in Europe, and to this day, I'm told I don't "act" American. Go figure.
