Remus and Tonks find the Teller's Court full of music, with Dance and Sing in the center, entertaining those gathered. They are graceful, their movements reflecting both the appreciation of the musicians' skills, and their love for each other. As the werewolf and his Auror wife take the space Snape and Malfoy made for them, the performance ends, and Dance and Sing bow to one another. For some reason, there seems to be a strange air of discomfort, and the four companions look at each other questioningly. As Snape is about to speak, they hear shouting from behind them and the Dark wizard is the first to rise, his hand already reaching for his wand.

None can believe the sight that greets them: two Silhouettes pursuing a blond wolf, desperately trying to catch him. Snape, Dance and Remus immediately move to intercept him, but the wolf dodges them easily. Remus makes another attempt and succeeds, landing on his side hard with the struggling wolf in his arms. He holds the struggling wolf as tightly as he can without hurting him, and together with Dance and Snape they carry him back to the Court. Layne snaps at the air, his eyes tightly closed, and tries to escape...

As Remus has his experience, Tonks has hers...

Tonks smiles up at the figure at the top of her fountain. It's a dancer, slender, elegant, and graceful; Tonks laughs because the dancer's face and hair resemble hers, and she is none of those things. She watches a butterfly, ghostly white and fragile, alight on a dry patch on the rim of the fountain. "Wotcher, flutterby," she says softly, then laughs when the tiny thing flits up and lands on her shoulder. It's there for only a second or two, just long enough to uncoil its tongue, then coil it up again. She barely has time to smile at it and then it's gone, and she can only gaze at it in wonder as it disappears from sight.

She walks around the fountain once it's gone, wondering what she can toss in. It's almost an obligation, she thinks, when you have a fountain, you have to toss something in. She checks her pockets but find nothing; she sighs and rubs her tummy, wishing she had some of the yummy bread from earlier in the day. She notices that the bottom two buttons of her crochet vest have come undone, and as she does them back up, a thought occurs to her...she pulls at the thread of...

Remus and Tonks follow Cilantro hand in hand into a lovely gated area. It's lit by shimmering little bugs, casually going about their business sipping nectar from the asphodel blossoms.

"This is a very special place," she says, pausing to push open the gate. "Enter with care," she looks at them both meaningfully, "for you will see only what you take in with you." She steps away and with a nod from her, Remus and Tonks venture forth side by side. It is peaceful here, it feels mystical, just as in the rest of the Garden of Dreams, but here, there something... more. This feeling grows as they near the fountain. The water bubbles up out of an odd, almost abstract human figure and cascades down it, pooling and bubbling in a shallow, shell-shaped basin. Even through the broken and roiling surface, the werewolf and his wife can see coins and small objects have been thrown into the water.

Remus sighs, knowing neither of them has a coin to toss in.

Snape is aware that he is not alone, but he does not allow it to disturb his meditation. He has no idea how much time passes before the visitor speaks, nor does he care. His only concern is that it does not cause him to question his resolve.

"It happens to us all, you know, death."

Snape's brow rises, but he doesn't bother to open his eyes. "Perhaps," says he, "but that need not happen to them now. Nor to me."

There is no sound from the visitor, no indication that they have moved, yet Snape senses that they have. "And you believe, do you, that you have control over their fates? That you can keep the three of them safe through this when you do not even know where they are?" Snape will not give the visitor the satisfaction of knowing that they have disturbed him. He does not give a snap reply; he takes his time and gathers himself before opening his eyes and finally answering.

"For the time being," says Snape, "their fates are in their own hands, and I have the utmost confidence in them to keep themselves alive." There is a sound that could be a soft chuckle, but Snape doesn't wait for a response. "Potter is...

Therion moves silently, carefully, through the Petra, listening to the soft voices of the stones. They call to him as he passes them, wishing to impart to him their secrets, for they know he appreciates such things. Though he would dearly love to do so he does not stop; no...he is searching for something so near his heart that he dare not even think of it, and he will not be delayed. Elsbet spoke of a 'before-time', when this was but a tiny haven...he hopes to find books set to stone from that time... He is so deep in thought that he arrives at his fondest wish, his heart's one desire at this moment before he even realizes he has reached them. He is in the oldest part of the Petra, where the First Speakers stand. The stone books around him are so very old and time-worn that one can barely read what is inscribed upon them. When the Pyramids of Egypt were new, they were already ancient.

Almost timidly, he walks up the pathway toward a semi-circular area, holding his breath.

Malfoy sits with his feathered friend, both of them enjoying the Harper's skill. He asks her if she would sing the song that she had sung earlier and she grins widely. "Of course, Lucius, I would be happy to. Now," Chanteuse says, nodding to her Piper companion, "it will be even better." As they begin, another musician, this one with a bodhrán, asks if he may join them and they welcome him warmly. With harp, pipes, Irish drum, and the lady Harper's beautiful voice, the experience could not be more magical.

When Malfoy emerges he catches Snape's eye, but before he can communicate anything to his Dark lover, Elsbet happily wraps her arms around him and asks if they had a nice chat. He forces the best smile he can muster and tells her that they did, and he knows what he, Snape, Therion and Layne are doing. Keeping Ellie, Remus and Tonks ignorant of the Old Man's fate. In a way, they are his Secret Keepers, and it hurts. Being open-hearted hurts...he remembers how it was when he felt nothing for anyone but his wife and child. It was so much easier then...he kisses the top of Elsbet's head and hugs her tightly. He knows that, after having tasted the lips of his lovers, after having felt the warmth of his friends, he will never go back to the pathetic fool he was.

"Let's go get our friend," he whispers as he releases his lovely Elf maiden, smiling in earnest as she picks up the loaf of bread meant for the swan. Layne takes her hand and together they push open the great doors with Remus and Tonks. The birds, save for Loki and Johnny Rook, take wing to the Garden of Dreams, leaving the rest of the little family to take their time walking. Behind the...

"So," the Old Man says as Bea helps him sit up in his chair, "how did it go?" He's grinning impishly at them, and Remus chuckles. "You already know, don't you?" Perdurabo shakes his head. "No," he grins widely, "I was napping actually." They tell him what transpired in the Dragon's Chamber and he is quite pleased. "Well then, the last working stone in our world is safe. What will you do next?" He looks questioningly at them and Snape accepts the case that now holds the Orthanc-stone. "I believe we shall be taking these gifts home, and--" Perdurabo smiles. "Severus, you know what I mean." Snape nods and looks at Elsbet. "I...am not certain. I believe we have much to discuss." The Old Man glances at Remus and Tonks, then back at Snape. "Yes, I believe you do." Bea pats Perdurabo's shoulder and he smiles softly. "You still have plans for the day, and I do not wish to keep you from them. You should be out there enjoying yourselves."

Perdurabo suggested that Snape and his family go down into the Dragon's Chamber on their own, because the experience would be far more profound that way. Capadocius and Thelonius escorted them to the stairway that leads down into the chamber and told them that if they needed anything, they need only to think it, and it would be done. So the family passed through the simple doorway and made their way down the stairs, some of them marking the change in temperature as they went. The birds either hopped down the steps or were carried, as Loki, Johnny Rook and Whiskey Jack were, none of them making a sound. In fact, no one spoke at all; their hearts too full of excitement and trepidation for words.

At last, they reach the massive oaken door in the great archway, and ponder for a few moments how they open it. Elsbet looks up at Layne, and the two friends smile. In unison, they raise their right hands in friendship and say, "Mel'lon". The door does not budge right away; tentatively, Elsbet reaches out and brushes the polished surface. The door creaks, then slowly moves aside for them to enter.

Laughter in the Wiltshire countryside.

Not something that is heard very often anymore. Well, not sane laughter, anyway.

Narcissa covers her mouth, but can't stop laughing at the tingle in her toes. Now, Cissy, the Grey Lady admonishes her, you mustn't eat those berries, they are for the potion! The raven drops three more leaves into the small cauldron and smells the aroma of a potion reaching the peak of its first stage. I am sorry, Lady, Narcissa thinks, wiping her mouth, but I like them, I've never eaten them before. Narcissa's mentor nods and she drops the rest of the berries into the cauldron. Well, the Grey Lady gives a raspy chuckle, later tonight you will discover what happens when you eat too many of them. She picks up the stick she had plucked the leaves from and taps the rim of the cauldron with it, bringing the potion to a boil.

Narcissa no longer wonders how this great bird is able to do magic, and with a stick she picked up off of the ground, no less. She accepts it as part of the world she had until now closed herself off from.

Perdurabo explains that when the entrance to the chamber was finally found and breached, Escellion was long-dead, but the Master Stone and the Stone of Amon Sûl were hidden safely in her bones. "So much time had passed," he says, "and the stones had been a part of her for so long, that they had absorbed some--well, a great deal, actually--of her magic and added it to their own. But what was truly astounding was that they upheld her vow." The Elder wizard tells them that a great altar was made in the very center of the chamber, and upon it was placed the Master Stone. At that time it became part of the defense of Perethil, and it has been there ever since. "It is stronger now than I believe it has ever been in its existence." Refreshments are brought out, and after some conversation Bea tells them that the Stone of Amon Sûl had been in Glorian's care until some time after the Silhouettes had arrived. "Once we had proven ourselves an asset, we were entrusted with it."

"Until we were ready..." Therion echoes, then stretches and rubs his neck. "This is a lot to have to be ready for. And there's something I don't understand." He looks around at the gathered Silhouettes. "You've said that you came here a thousand years ago, but--" there is soft laughter and guilty glances around the study, and the answer comes from behind them. "That is because we still count the passage of time in our years. In yours," Bea chuckles softly as she takes Malfoy into her arms in a loving embrace, and Therion shakes his head. "I don't think I want to know what the conversion is...I don't think I could get my mind around it." Bea releases Malfoy, then places a hand on Perdurabo's arm as she moves passed him to embrace Snape.

It is so good to be in her arms again. Her warmth and comfort, so like a mother's, gives him strength and encouragement. She would take them all into her arms at once, if she could, she loves them so. Elsbet looks up at Therion. "What is time, really? Elrond was three thousand years old when Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. How many generations separated Isildur and Aragorn? How long had...

Thirty years?" Layne and Therion ask, almost in unison. Perdurabo nods, his grin far less disturbing now, and sighs. "It...I think of the stone as he, for certainly the stone possesses a sense of identity, you can't exit as long as he has without developing a kind of awareness, and even the One Ring--" the elder wizard realizes he's rambling and stops. Elsbet giggles and kisses his forehead, and he laughs at himself. "Sorry, it's just that...so few understand. He was alone for so long. He knows this place, Perethil. This city was founded by Elves and Half-Elves, and was already thriving when Gondorians and Rohirrim arrived. Among them were some of your ancestors...even yours Layne. Great Wolves, those who had defied Saruman and were banished from their homeland by those who chose to follow him, had joined the exodus to this sacred Sanctuary."

Layne sits back down beside Remus, shocked, and after several minutes of stunned silence, Perdurabo asks him if he saw the name Uriel in his Tree, and he can only shake his head. Therion, however, nods. "Yes, I did...you had looked away from the parchment." Something silent...

Laughing almost like small children caught sneaking cookies, Snape and his family go up the stairs quickly. The birds play a game with each other as they follow them back up, squawking and cawing loudly as they go, with no clear winner decided once they're up. "They've got the sillies," one of the younger Silhouettes says as she picks up Anubis and gives him a gentle snuggle. Thelonius, Capadocius' first mate, asks them where 'The Rook' has gone off to and Layne opens his jacket. The crow has managed to settle himself into the breast pocket of the shirt quite comfortably, and he peers up at his ebony friend with a glint of mischief in his eyes. Me won. Me has my Da. Thelonius laughs and pats Layne on the back. "As we had hoped," he says as he opens wide the heavy doors. As they enter the grand house, their eyes adjust quickly to the dim light, and both Snape and Malfoy sense the Silhouettes resting in the dark recesses. It is as if the very darkness...no...the very house is alive with them. While Malfoy seems put at ease by this fact, Snape is not. He knows this means the Old Man is drawing closer to his death.

As soon as they leave the Hall of Chronicles, the birds take wing toward the white-stone home of Brother Perdurabo. Except, that is, for Alphion. Snape watches him peel away from the flock and head north. You are not accompanying us to Ironwood? he asks Cambion's brother, and the raven replies, I tell my kin you know now. He feels Elsbet and Malfoy behind him, feels their gentle touches, and watches until the raven disappears from sight.

Severus? Malfoy thinks, resting his hand on Snape's shoulder, and the ebon-haired wizard turns slowly to his partners. There is much more to that bird than one would think, he replies, and Elsbet glances backward. What do you mean? Malfoy asks and after a minute or two of thought, Snape silently expresses doubts about Therion's earlier claim. I do not believe he and Cambion are clutch-brothers. They note that the rest of the family has paused for them to catch up, so Snape guards his thoughts as he shares them. Brothers, yes, but...Alphion posesses something Cambion lacks, something that a difference in skill and experience can not account for. Elsbet smiles at her family and...

The Heir of Aragorn.

All eyes are on Snape, and Tonks moves closer to her husband. "Then..." she begins to speak but can't finish, and Elsbet, bright eyes filled with tears of joy, smiles at him radiantly. "I told you that you are King." He takes her into his arms, his own eyes filling with tears, and he holds her tightly to him. He shakes his head once, and the Chronicler smiles softly. "Good sir," he says in a gentle tone, "the living, indesputable proof is there, warm in your embrace." Malfoy lays his hand gently on the Dark wizard's shoulder as Layne and Therion usher the birds over to the bench. Malfoy asks, "Severus, in all the scrolls and books you found, did you discover nothing--" Snape nods and kisses the top of Elsbet's head, then says, his voice strained and cracking, "yes, I found small hints of a larger truth, but..." he takes a deep breath, "it wasn't really real to me until now."

And so Severus Snape and his little tribe learn who they really are...the descendants of the brave folk who faced the Dark Lord Sauron; at last, they understand where the courage to face the Dark Lord Voldemort comes...

Snape steels himself as the Chronicler pulls down a fresh parchment, and silently he glances at his loved ones. These people have come to mean everything to him; now, it is clear to him that they truly are meant to be together, and he wonders how much darker his life would have been if he had never met Elsbet, or if he had turned away from her...

There is strength in unity, he knows. He feels stronger now than he has ever felt before in his life. How much stronger will he become?

He steps up to the parchment and takes a deep breath; Malfoy comes to his side and takes his hand, pricks it gently, and heals it before the precious red jewel completes its fall. He does not release his lover's hand. For a moment, nothing happens; Elsbet comes to his side as well and takes his other hand, holding her breath. As the rest of the family gathers, Snape's tree begins to grow. Slowly, at first, then after the seventh generation, it takes off so quickly that none can keep up with all the names. His father's name amounts to nothing, just as Snape figured; it was the name of the village where the farm was located, and before that, they were known by...

A man clothed in all black stands by the windowsill at midnight. He's anxious, obviously. For what? He moves from the window and back to his desk. He nervously fumbles with a vial of an unknown liquid. His mind, however, is very far off. In his minds eye, he sees himself, but not alone as he is now, but accompanied by another man. Long, platinum blonde hair falls down his back and on his broad shoulders like a seductive silk waterfall. In comparison of physical features, he is much lighter than his seemingly shadowy friend, the black clothed man. The man in all black has black hair that hangs in curtains around his grayish colored face. His eyes are black, much different than those of his blonde companion, whose are light gray. The two men move closer in his minds eye, and now they embrace each other. Snape, the black haired man, leans in closer and passionately kisses the blond haired man, Lucius. Lucius quickly returns it, and adds a slight twist with a nibble to Snape's lower lip. As their lips part, Snape runs his hand through the silk like hair of his lover, grabbing a handful of it and pulling it back, revealing an exposed neck. Snape caresses said neck with his mouth,...

Layne holds Johnny Rook closely to him, and the crow tugs at the lapel of his jacket. Me knew wen me saw you, he thinks as Layne tucks him inside that jacket, you be my Da. Therion puts his arm around Layne's waist as the fair wizard asks the crow, "when you first saw me, how did you see me? I mean, how did I look to you?" Johnny Rook pulls the jacket closed and snuggles close to Layne's heart. You furry. Layne looks down at the lump on his chest. "I looked furry to you?" There's a muffled caw from inside Layne's jacket, and Johnny Rook thinks, you furry wen me first see! Me know you long time! The Chronicler pulls down a fresh parchment as Layne prepares himself. "This is so exciting," Tonks says, "I want to go after him." Remus smiles softly at her and sits down on the bench between Malfoy and Snape. Are you sure you're safe here, Lupin? Snape thinks to him, and the werewolf glances at them almost shyly. What? Between the two of you? He grins, thinking, well, there's not much either of you can do to me here in the Hall of Chronicles, now, is there? Malfoy sighs, grey eyes twinkling, and leans forward slightly. He's right, Severus...I don't suppose there's many places here we could, you know, innocently wander off to. Snape looks at them side-long and thinks, I wouldn't be so sure, Lucius. If we want him badly enough, we can always get creative.

"Alright now," Remus says, trying to keep a straight face, "is this even appropriate?" Malfoy chuckles softly and says, "no, not at all. And I think you like it." He pats Remus on the back and gets up, stretches, then walks over to Layne, who has not started his scrivening yet. "Are you alright?" Malfoy asks and Layne fidgets with his fingers. "I don't know. He's so relaxed that he doesn't even feel Malfoy prick his finger, and his blood has hit the parchment by the time the tiny wound is healed. That drop of blood flattens out and soaks into the parchment, then suddenly, tiny avian shapes spread up and out, and everywhere they flit appears information. The birds gather around Therion's feet to watch, and chatter excitedly to each other. "Hmmm..." he says, "so it is true." The little tribe gathers closer to him as he reaches up and taps the parchment. "It wasn't always Bonecastle. See here? Eoward Castlemount wed Egrane Bonesteel. They had no children, and he died three years after they married. Egrane then married his brother Alesander Castlemount...oh my..." he pauses for a moment, chuckles, then continues, "a week after Eoward's death. Their son Thorin took the name Bonecastle, and passed that name down."

"There's got to be a story behind that," Layne says and the Chronicler nods. "I'm sure there is, somewhere here..." Malfoy rubs his chin, musing, "Thorin...that's a Dwarvish name." Therion nods and says, "Yes, but I've no Dwarvish blood. There's Scandinavian in that line, you see?...

Malfoy's blood strikes the parchment and there is a very loud hiss, like icy water on a red-hot hotplate, and the crimson fluid seems to boil. They are alarmed, of course, but the Chronicler laughs. "Ah, I nearly forgot! You are part of the Silhouettes, Lucius, yes?" Malfoy nods, not taking his eyes away from the sight, and tells the Chronicler that The Great Mother gave him part of her heart. Everyone relaxes once the parchment sorts out the differences in Malfoy's blood, and like a flash-fire, his family tree spreads out over the parchment. He watches as the name of Brutus Malfoy appears and tastes bile; Brutus had written in 1675, "nothing is a surer sign of weak magic than a weakness for non-magical company." He feels a surge of hatred, hot and deep, knowing what those forebearers would think of the beauty at his side. While she is more magical than they could imagine she's not human, and to them she would have been nothing. They are greeted by darkness, but that darkness is quickly banished as flames on candles set into empty spaces on the walls flicker to life. The air is suddenly tinged with a fragrance that none of them can identify, though on some level, they each recognize it, and are put at ease. There is a slight chill to the air, but the chill gives way as their warmth fills the enormous chamber they've entered. Everywhere they look there are books, books, scrolls, skeletons of various creatures in protective cases, weapons and shields, and all manner of incredible things. Things, Snape notes, that feel somehow out of place here. Like they did not originate in this Reality. He thinks back to the mystical Mirror that helped him find his way to the happiness he now has. As he moves slowly from item to item in the display case, he is gripped with a grim determination; Els must not see these things. He knows what the sight of these blades would do to her, how they would set her off. She would want to touch them, to hold them, and to take more than one of them home.

Steeling himself for the worst, Snape approaches the glass and sees Malfoy sitting with his back to the door. After a second, the White Wizard looks over his shoulder at his Dark lover, an expression of undisguised joy on his face. After another couple of seconds, the elegant head of the great bird appears, and rests on Malfoy's shoulder. The swan gazes at Snape, who finds himself at a loss. He sees Malfoy's lips move and he knows he's asking the swan something; the bird turns his head and clacks his bill in response. Malfoy laughs and Snape's heart is light...clearly, the healing is a success. He opens the door as the Healer begins to rise, holdng the swan, and steps aside to let them in.

The silence that had fallen when Snape went to the door lasts only briefly; as soon as the other birds see that their friend is alive and apparently well, they express themselves loudly enough that Snape is certain the household in the next plot can hear them. Let them, he thinks, this is reason to celebrate. Layne approaches carefully and extends a hand to the swan in Malfoy's arms. "His bill is black," he says, "why is his bill black?" Elsbet grins...

In the morning, before Malfoy wakes, Snape tells Elsbet that he has inquired about Micha's fate, and she tells him she thinks he is dead. "But--" he doesn't let her finish. He kisses her tenderly and holds her close, thinking to her, what makes you believe Bea didn't mean your brother and Sirius? She rests her head against Snape's chest and tells him, "why would Sirius be watching over me instead of Harry?" Snape nearly laughs, but he would never make light of her. "My beauty," he says softly, gazing into her brilliant blue eyes, "he is a Spirit, he can watch over you both." Her eyes begin to water, but he quickly kisses away the tears before they can fall.

Finally, she agrees that Snape is right, it's worth a try, but tells him that if Micha is dead, she does not want to know how he died. Snape agrees not to tell her if that is indeed the case. She takes his hand and pulls him out of the room, telling him, "let's start...
