Chris brought everyone to a five star hotel. Including Duncan, Alejandro, and me. I was handed a gold key that told me I was in room 609. Sixth floor. I was riding up the elevator with the other final three. Alejandro was leaning against the wall, twirling his key around his finer. Duncan was leaning against the other wall, his arm around me. Alejandro got off on the third floor, and Duncan got off on the fifth. He gave me a quick kiss before he walked out. Then I got off on the sixth floor. I brushed a piece of hair behind my ear while I opened my room door. It was great. It had an amazing view of the Hawaiian beach. Not sure what it's called. But it was pretty. I can say that. My room had beige walls, a cream carpet, and the bed was dark wood with a red bed spread. My stuff was already in there. Along with a small care package and my phone, which was fully charged. I sat on the edge of the bed, looking through the texts that I got.
Reaper. Reaper. Marilyn. Pixie Corps. Marilyn. Pixie Corpse. Alex. Reaper. Marilyn. Nora. Nora. Pixie Corps. Pixie Corps.
I decided that I would wait till after the finale to text them back. I heard faint music in the next room. I picked up my keys and walked out of my room, knocking on the door. The music stopped, and I heard faint sobs. Then some deep breaths before the door opened. She had on an obviously fake smile, her clothes were wrinkled, and her hair was perfect. But her tell was her bloodshot eyes. I glanced into her room, seeing Justin Beiber, Glee, P!nk, Black Eyed Peas, and Miley Cyrus albums strewed around her room.
She took in a steady breath before speaking. "Hi, Gwen. Congratulations." She said with so much fakeness it made me sick.
"Hi, Courtney. Are you okay?" I asked her.
She paused.
"Fine." She lied.
"I'm not stupid. You were crying and listening to sappy love songs." I said to her. She sighed and turned on her stereo, Justin Beiber's That Should be Me playing. I leaned against the doorframe. She was still upset about Duncan. I folded my arms and tapped my fingers against my arm. "You still miss him, don't you?" I asked her with true sympathy. Sure, she was a bitch. But she was still a human with feelings. A human that was hurt.
Instead of talking, she pressed her fist to her lips, tears running down her face again. She nodded while squeezing her eyes shut. I walked into her room, taking her with me. I sat her on the end of her bed.
I sat next to her. "You like theater, don't you?" I asked her.
"Yeah. It's a dream of mine to act on Broadway." She said with a smile.
"And you also like emotion."
"That's a given." She said.
"Okay." I said. I remembered something in my science class about light. Stopping it. Then getting it going again.
That's it!
"Light, is emotion. I want you think of light, a beam of light, as a story. A story with it's own past it's own history. Maybe it's been traveling for a long time - decades, centuries. And somewhere along its journey, it starts to slow down." I said to her. She gave me a strange look.
Alright, different angle.
"Now, I want you to imagine you're at the theater." I said to her, making her look at her closet across from her. "You're sitting in the audience, and you're watching a play. You say you like theater?"
"I do. What are you doing this?"
"So the curtains have just opened. And there people on stage, and they're still, not moving. Who are these people? What is their past? We don't know. At the beginning of a play, we don't know anything about them at all. Their pasts are frozen. Suspended. Then the play begins, and we start to learn things about them. Information unfolds. We learn that this character really needs something, or this character has a dream, a passion," I paused and looked at her. She stayed focused on the image of the theater. I placed my hand on her shoulder. "Or maybe this one's been hurt... Within minutes, we can learn so much about them. In less then ten minutes, we can see the DNA of their whole lives. Something is illuminated." I finished. Courtney looked at me and smiled.
"I think I understand." She said. "You're using the theory that someone can stop a beam of light with chilled sodium gas, and then they can revive it by flashing a second beam through the gas." She said. She... gets it. She placed her hand on my shoulder. "You were the gas." She said, a frown appearing on her lips. I frowned too. Then she smiled warmly at me. "But you're also my second beam." She said before hugging me.
"Courtney, I know you're still not quite over Duncan. But, if he really had the nerve to kiss a girl who is nothing compared to you, then maybe it's just a sign saying you two aren't meant to be." I said to her. She pulled away from me and looked down at her hands that were then folded in her lap. "But I know that you'll find the perfect guy." I said to her. She looked at me and smiled.
"I do fell emotional right now. For you mainly." She said.
I smiled at Courtney and stood up. "Great. Use it. I hope I helped." I said to her. She smiled at me, turning the music back up. I walked out of the room and back into mine. I shut the door and walked over to my bed, picked up the remote for the TV. I turned it on, seeing that The Office was on. I smiled and sat back. At least I could relax for tonight.
