I got into the front seat on my mom's car while my brother tuned his guitar in the back. I couldn't believe that I had won a million dollars. And now, I was on my way home. The first four quarters of the drive wasn't so bad, seeing as my mom let me sleep the while way, but it was the last part of the trip when my mom started hounding me with questions.
"So who did you hang out with?" she asked.
"A friend."
"Did you meet anyone?"
"No." I responded. I heard Alex snicker in the back. "Shut it!" I snapped at him while I turned to see him. He had his feet up on the seat with his guitar on his lap.
"I'm not stupid, Gwen. I saw you and that Duncan boy kissing. That and Nora called me when that happened." My mom told me. Note to self. Kill my friend. "So have you been in touch with any of your friends since the show ended?"
"I was about to call them." I told her while I took out my phone, longing for an excuse to get away from my mother's interrogation. Me and my four closest friends - Reaper, Marilyn, Pixie Corps, and Nora - started a five way conference call.
"So I saw you and Duncan." Pixie teased me.
"Same with whoever else watched that episode." I told her. "So Reap, is your mom decorating for the holidays yet?" I asked him. I heard him growl. His mom never let him decorate for Halloween and instead started decorating for Christmas.
"Yes. It looks like Santa threw up in the living room." He said. Everyone laughed.
"It's true. I was there yesterday." Marilyn said.
"She added." Reaper shuttered.
"Damn."
"Well what's new with the short one?" I asked, referring to Nora. She was the smallest one in our group. Only an inch shorter than me, but still short.
"Nothin' really. School still sucks." She sighed.
"True that." Reaper interjected.
"It's boring without you here!" Pixie whined. "I'm stuck with my little sister listening to all the bands I hate without you here to invite me over for movie nights."
"I'll make it up to you guys. Tomorrow night. Movie night. Us and Duncan." I offered.
"All of us?" Reaper asked.
"All of us." I agreed.
"Sweet!"
"I'm in." Nora said.
"Me too." Marilyn said.
"Don't have to ask me twice." Pixie breathed.
"I'm gonna call Duncan before my battery runs out. See you all tomorrow at school." I said to them. They all said their goodbyes, then I called Duncan. He picked up.
"Hi, Gwenny." He said.
"Hi, Juvie." I said back, mocking his tone. "Wanna watch some movies with my gang and me tomorrow night? No charge."
"Can we kiss?"
"Reaper will probably bring over a box of mistletoe from his house and push us under it, so I guess so." I said.
"It's not even Halloween." He said.
"His mom doesn't let him decorate for Halloween. She decorates for Christmas instead."
"I'd probably just go ahead and kill myself if my mom ever did that."
"Same here. But that's not the case."
"Which is good. I'll see you tomorrow, kay?" he asked.
"Yeah."
"Cool. Love you." He said to me. I smiled as my eyelids lowered a bit and I blushed.
"Love you too." I said while I looked down at my hands in my lap. Then I hung up. It's official. I'm in love.
"Gwen, when we get home, there's someone I want you to meet." She said to me. I looked at her with an eyebrow raised.
"Who?" I asked, half scared and half curious.
"Richard." She said. Who the fuck is Richard?
"Mom's new beaux." Alex interjected from the backseat just as we pulling into the driveway. Oh dear God. We got out, my backpack being strapped firmly onto my back. I noticed that there was a black Porsche in the driveway. Damn. I walked inside, seeing a guy with red-brown slicked back hair leaning on the kitchen counter with a newspaper in front of him. I assumed that was Richard. The he looked over to us and smiled when he saw my mom. She put a hand on my shoulder.
"Richard, this is my daughter, Gwen. Gwen, this is Richard." She said.
"Nice to meet the famous daughter." Richard said to me with a grin that reminded me of Chris's. Just what I need after two years on that freaking show.
"I'm not famous. I was just on a reality show." I said calmly before walking upstairs to wash my clothes and get some sleep.
.oOo.
The next day went by quickly because I kept getting constant congratulations and people asking me for cash. And this will last for a week, give or take. Then I'm back to being the outcast. I was sitting in the basement with Reaper and Nora. Nora was laughing at him for having a mom that wouldn't let him decorate for his favorite holiday. Then Marilyn and Pixie walked in with a stack of movies.
"Okay. I want to meed your boyfriend!" Pixie said while she sat next to me.
"He should be here any minute." I said before Duncan walked down the stairs with a smirk. I jumped up and he walked over to me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me. I heard a chorus of "aw"'s from the girls while Reaper gave Duncan a thumbs up.
"You two are so cute together!" Nora said in her fake preppy girl voice. Then Duncan smirked at her.
"I wonder how cute we'd look together, darling." He teased. Nora just gave him her signature death glare. I just laughed. I couldn't take her seriously when she did that. Duncan's eyes widened.
"For a short chick you can give one hell of a death glare. But you look to cute!" he said to her while he walked over to her.
"I'm Nora." She said while he held her hand out for him. He shook her hand and opened his mouth to talk, but, "you're Duncan. Gwen told us." Duncan turned his head to look at me.
"Oh did she?" he asked before turning back to her.
"As soon as she came back from TDA, she wouldn't shut up about you." Reaper said. Duncan looked at him. "I'm Reaper."
"I swear, she would go on for hours on how 'awesome' you were." Pixie teased me.
"I would not!" I screamed.
"Don't get me started." Marilyn said. "Once, she went on for an entire history class about how much she loved y-"
"Okay, we need to choose a movie!" I said, slapping a hand over Marilyn's mouth.
"Aw, Gwen's embarrassed about a crush." Reaper teased me while he batted his eyes and pressed his hands to the side of his white face. I heard Nora and Marilyn snicker.
"I swear, if you guys say anything else about last year, you will be maimed." I said before putting on Nightmare on Elm Street.
.oOo.
After a few movies, it was just Nora, Duncan, and me. We were sitting in my room, Nora snooping through my bookshelf. I sat with my back against the headboard and my legs out in front of me. Duncan had his head on my lap while I fiddled with his mohawk. Nora pulled out a book and placed it in her lap, reading the back cover. I noticed the book right away.
"You wouldn't like it." I said to her. She glared at me and carelessly tossed the book across the room with a flick of her wrist.
"I need something to read." She groaned while she fell onto her back. She looked at me with pleading eyes. "Have anything?" I sighed and stood up, pushing Duncan off the bed and flat on his face. He groaned and sat back up while I crouched in front of the bookshelf. I scanned the books, pulling on a paperback with an unusual cover.
I turned to Nora and dropped the book on her stomach. "Remember when I did a report on this is seventh grade?" I asked her. She sat up and looked at the book. "I loved it. Try it. Then you can borrow the others in the series." I told her. She smiled at me and hugged me. I had picked out the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. I read them when I was middle school, going into high school and loved them. Nora never read them, and we usually read the same kind of books.
"Thanks! Pixie has been nagging me since you gave that report." She said. Then the guitar portion of Animal by Neon Trees played. I recognized it as Nora's ringtone. She looked at her phone, sighing. "I have to go. Parent's wondering where I am." She said before leaving. Just as she did, Richard walked in with something behind his back. He smiled at me.
"Hi, Gwen." He said to me while he walked further in, sitting on the side of my bed.
"Um, come in?" I muttered under my breath while I stood up in front of my mom's boyfriend.
"I know you weren't home for your birthday, but I wanted to give you this." He said while handing me a small box in bright orange wrapping paper. This guy knows nothing about me.
"Thanks. I think I'm going to get some sleep. See you in the morning." I said to Richard before he left. Once the door shut, Duncan and I sat on the side of my bed. I opened the box, seeing that there was one piece of silver jewelry. A silver neckless with a small, silver skull pendant. I guess I could give Richard a try.
Oh God was I wrong.
