Son of Neptune- My story
|
||
It WAS going to be only one chapter. That's why I originally put it in Articles. But I ended up not being able to stop.
Percy- The whole world was spinning at top speed, for what seemed to be a minute. Then it suddenly stopped. I opened my eyes slowly, and immediately regretted it. A sharp dagger like pain erupted in my temples. I quickly closed my eyes. The pain receded. Then a shocking thought hit me. Where was I . . . and I realized the most terrifying thought of all- Who am I? My eyes shot open again, but I ignored the throbbing pain. That is when I took in my surroundings. I was in an enclosed space that looked like the inside of a tent. The ‘ceiling’ and ‘walls’ were a camouflage green and it was barely tall enough for someone to stand up. There were three other bunks, or beds, just like the one I was sitting on. It was hard and cold, like I hadn’t been there for very long. The tent was vacant of any people. I was wearing a white tank top and camouflage pants. This is creepy, I thought, I wake up in a random tent having no idea who I even am. Wearily I stood up and made my way to the tent flap. I lifted the flap to see a camp with tents much like mine. It was dark outside with snow on the ground and a thick layering of trees enclosing the campsite. “Look who decided to show,” a boy with curly blonde hair said, “Now the party can start. Right Ken?” He was shorter and had a mischievous smile that gave me the impression he was a troublemaker. I knew someone who looked like that. Wait, what? There were two other boys standing by him. The boy Ken, who had blonde hair and blue eyes said “You got that right Craig! Percy tomorrow is free day. We can go to the town and meet some girls.” He smiled knowingly, as if it was an inside joke we both shared. “I don’t know what you are talking about.” I replied. “I don’t know you. I don’t know where I am. I don’t even remember who I am.” The two boys, who had talked earlier, Ken and Craig, both started to crack up. “Nice one Percy!” But the other looked at me mysteriously, as if he had never seen me before. He seemed to make a momentary decision. “Guys he is serious. Maybe he got a fever or hit his head.” He suggested. The others looked at me strange like I was going insane. “Yah, maybe Bobby.” Bobby had light brown hair and was pretty strong looking. His eyes were memorizing, I think they were hazel and they had sparks in them. Craig decided to help me out a bit “We are your best buddies Ken, Bobby, and I. We are in a military camp for troublemakers. You’re name is Percy. You are the strongest person in the camp and the ladies love you. Anything ring a bell?” I was even more confused “Not really.” Ken tried “You and I have a lot of fun impressing the ladies. They love us, and we are the perfect pair. We both got the looks. I got the pickup lines; you have the broad shoulders, muscles, and a stinkin’ 6 pack. You have the personality they love, with the jokes and all. No? Nothing? Common, we are the perfect chick magnet duo.” “Nope, I got nothing.” I simply stated. We decided to call it a night and headed back to our tent. Craig and Ken talked for a while, making a few jokes. Bobby looked at me as though he didn’t trust me. I decided that he at least didn’t recognize me. I stood up and sat next to him on his bed. “Bobby, you seem to know a little bit about what is going on. Do you know me?” I asked attentively. “I have never seen you before in my life. You have a strong aura, though. Your whole being radiates power. No wonder you have a way with the mist.” He debated. I felt relieved; at least I was not the only one going crazy. “You don’t know anything about me then, right?” I cautiously inquired. “I know you are no ordinary mortal. For one thing, you didn’t ask what the Mist was.” He said warily. Without thinking I said “Isn’t that like a veil that hides, or at least deforms, what happens in the real world from mortals?” the moment it was out I regretted it. Bobby looked at me as if I was dangerous. “Yah, that is exactly what it is.” He said. Then he called for lights out. I stayed up for a while, sitting in the pitch dark. I was never afraid of the dark, but this time was different. The blackness was suffocating and I felt so alone and confused. This was all bewildering. What was going on? I tried to pull some memories of my past out of my brain, anything. Images, names, events, anything! All I got was a major headache, and a pair of eyes. Beautiful eyes. They were a silver gray that seemed to be staring right into my soul. My heart started pounding a little faster. Was this important to my past? I slowly fell into a shallow but dreamless sleep. Annabeth- This has to be the worst week of my life. That is how long it has been since I discovered he was gone: Eight days, six hours, and about 20 minutes. I had never felt so emotionally and physically drained. But I was not going to give up. I was never going to give up on finding Percy. He was too special to Camp . . . too special to me. Everyone would say that is because he is my ‘boyfriend,’ but I don’t think boyfriend is the right word. There are the junior high relationships where couples walk down the hall holding hands in awkward silence and never really go on dates. They are ‘together’ for a week then they break up. Shallow guys, girls, and immature relationships. If Percy was like that, I wouldn’t have fallen for him, and man I had fallen hard. We had something, something so special and unique. I thought we had built something permanent, but now he is gone, vanished. He had promised me, and he had broken that promise. If I can’t trust him, who can I trust? Today camp was busy with the planning and building of Argo II. The Hephaestus cabin was amazing, and slowly they would work off their curse. I had been helping with the more detailed designs on the ship, adding my own flair of architecture to the boat. I worked furiously hard, and nonstop. I had not stopped for anything, not even lunch. I couldn’t bear to go to the pavilion to see the empty Poseidon table with no friendly smile to greet me. I was in my cabin, working on Daedalus’ laptop, looking at maps of California. You can guess what for. I don’t have the heart to tell you. I glanced up from the laptop and noticed various things Percy had given me. There were pictures of us smiling, arm in arm at various locations. One was at the Empire State Building, another at our favorite beach site. I looked over at the light pink sea shell Percy had given to me. I picked it up and stroked it slowly. I could almost envision him here. He had a faint smell of sea salt and cologne. I imagined his eyes, gorgeous and stunning sea green eyes. They had a way of staring right into my soul, making my heart run a marathon. In these peaceful thoughts, I slowly drifted to sleep. My dreams were, as usual, torturous and full of Percy. It was the day he gave me the sea shell. We were at the beach, our favorite spot, where few people went. We were walking on the warm soft sand hand locked in hand. He was gently caressing my hand with his fingers reassuringly. We were comfortably talking and laughing. I missed his humor. He led me to the roaring water and willed it to calm to a constant and slow tide. We ran our feet through the cool water. His smile vanished “Annabeth,” he said seriously, “I have been thinking a lot-” (I smiled at that image) “-about what you said a while ago about building something permanent, something to last forever. Do you think we can build something permanent?” The tide rushed soothingly past my knee and my heart soared out of its place. “You never know,” I teasingly answered, “Something may happen. I might find someone smarter than you and fall for him. Or some crazy god could come and kill me.” An emotion flashed in his eyes that I had rarely seen on his face. It was fear. He was scared of losing me. Then he grinned at me in his sly, mischievous, and teasing smile. Suddenly a fountain of water burst up under my feet. I shot high into the air riding on a fountain of water. The flow suddenly stopped and I free fell to the waves. Before I hit the water Percy caught me in his arms and held me tight and close. He looked at me fiercely with his intense and beautiful sea green eyes and said “I don’t know what I would do without you. You mean more than the world to me, wise girl.” He slowly pulled me closer, leaned in, eyes fluttering closed. He kissed me softer than angel’s wings, softer than a summer’s breeze. It took my breath away. Fountains of water exploded around us, making me laugh inwardly, just like those cheesy love movies. He leaned back and met my eyes serenely. He said “And don’t you ever forget it. I will never do anything to hurt you. I will never leave you. I promise.” “I believe you.” The thing was- I did believe him. How stupid of me to believe him on something as dangerous as that. I should have known! He was the most powerful demigod in the world, perhaps even in all of history! Something was bound to happen. I had been blind to that. And if I find him, when I find him, I would punch him- For breaking that promise. He set me down into the water, though I didn’t realize my feet were on the ground. I had floated to heaven, excuse me, Olympus, and wasn’t coming back down. One look at Percy told me he was taking the same trip. I decided to take full opportunity of his moment of weakness. I pulled out my dagger and swiped teasingly at his arm, having it bounce harmlessly off. He came out of his ‘love trance’ with a smile. But not before I tackled him into the water. “Never let your guard down, Seaweed Brain.” I smirked. We came to a silent truce that I had won, and he took my hand and together we dove into the waves. Before I knew it we had an air bubble around our heads, and he was leading me through the deep chasm of ocean. He had an arm around my back, keeping me close to his warm body. Effortlessly he willed the water to push us through the wonderland of coral. Percy spotted a gorgeous light pink sea shell and handed it to me. It was the same shell that I kept now, months later, as a reminder that this day was real. Percy wasn’t a dream, and that he loved me. |

Have a good one,
Hecate :)
Percy-
I woke up to Ken shaking me awake.
He cheerily said “Rise and shine, pretty boy, it is 6:00, time for the morning death run.” I groaned in protest. I had a feeling I liked to sleep in and wasn’t used to early hours. Regretting, I got out of my warm bed.
I looked through my duffel bag and put on the required camo pants. I also found an orange t-shirt that said Camp Half-blood and put it on. Bobby eyed it suspiciously.
A whistle rung and we rushed outdoors. There was a buff military man with a military buzz hair cut. His face was stern and he immediately started yelling out stern orders. A few guys glared at me like they hated me.
The camp was herded into a group and we started our run. There were military leaders stationed at different parts of the trail to maintain array and shout out orders. I ran with Ken, Craig, and Bobby. I regretted Bobby, because he stuck to us like glue, almost like we were his personal assignment to keep safe and out of trouble.
The trail was fine and flat at first, but after a while it started to steepen up. There were pine trees in every direction. We had sweat lining our shirts and face. We were all winded, myself a little less than the others. My salty sweat seemed to be energizing me more than exhausting me. As the slope increased there was a thin opening of the trees to reveal a ledge and below the two hundred food cliff there was a large and icy river. There were several ice chunks flowing rapidly down. There were white rapids and I could tell it would be a painful death to fall into that.
Craig broke down in dry heaving so Ken, Bobby, and I stayed behind to help him. We pulled over to the right side of the trail, the side of the cliff. Everyone else passed us. While Craig was suffering in his pain, Ken decided to go get a closer look at the river below the rigid cliff. I didn’t pay that much attention, but decided to help Craig. His dry heaving seemed to have calmed down, but we decided to let him rest. Bobby pulled some water out of his huge backpack. I wondered what he put in that huge thing. . . Only then did I sense something was wrong. I realized Ken wasn’t here.
In desperation I looked over to the cliff. Ken was standing with his back to the cliff, his eyes in a trance, as if he was mesmerized. A few yards in front of him were about ten creatures. They had chalky white skin, devil red eyes, a left leg that looked like a hoofed animal, and a right leg looked human- except it was bronze looking. The front one was the most terrifying of all, and when she smiled you could see her deathly white fangs.
Kelli. Kelli and Tammi. . . there was an extremely hazy image of them in a band room. They were approaching Ken, who was looking as if he was seeing the most beautiful creatures in the world. Kelli was at the front speaking to Ken, though I couldn’t hear what she said. Tammi and eight other Empusa were closely following behind her, preparing for a large and yummy feast.
I started to freak out. How could I get to him in time? What could I do?
“Bobby . . .” I said in a warning voice.
Bobby immediately tensed and looked straight at Kelli, who was going to pounce at any second. I watched Bobby’s face tense up in concentration I looked towards Ken and could have sworn a rock moved from a few feet away right in front of Kelli. Completely shocked and caught off guard, Kelli tripped on the rock. Good news: she didn’t get to bite Ken. Bad News: she had tripped forward knocking into Ken and sending him flying off the cliff.
I was freaking out. If he didn’t die from Kelli, he would never survive the fall into that river.
Bobby looked at me with serious eyes and said “You know what to do, do something. I will take on the creatures.”
Uh huh. I thought doubtfully. I know what to do? What are you crazy? Do something. He had said. Well, the only thing I could do is jump off the cliff or stay here and watch my friend fall to his death. Well, at least the friend I had had for less than 24 hours. I ran to the edge and jumped.
You know the feeling when you are asleep and you feel like you are falling then quickly wake up? Yah, that would describe how falling to your death felt like. Except all you can think about is that you are going to splatter then say hello to Hades. As I was falling, which seemed like a long fall, all I could do is pray that Ken did not die from the fall.
I hit the water, but was surprised at the fact that the contact wasn’t painful and that I was still alive. While I was still submerged I didn’t feel the cold, in fact, the water seemed to sharpen my senses, I wasn’t tired from the morning run anymore. I felt wide awake and strong, powerful. My movements were one with the current.
My instincts took control of my brain. I sensed Ken about ten yards away from me. My mind willed the current to slow and to my surprise the white water rapids calmed dramatically. I could see Ken’s head bobbing and down in the water, though I could tell he was unconscious. I swam like lightening to him and draped him on my shoulders.
Great I thought now how do we get up the cliff to help Bobby? The moment I thought this a fountain of water sprang me up calmly and controlled up 200 ft cliff. I stepped off the elevator like fountain of water onto the edge where I saw the scene in front of me. And it wasn’t looking too good.
Bobby was fighting two Empusa at the same time. He had only killed one in the time I had gotten Ken. Craig had even recovered and was handling several weapons. Where did he get those? He seemed to favor the bow and started firing arrows. Where had he learned to do that?!!
Here I was going to face death.
I set Ken down, and not knowing what I was doing I reached in my pocket and pulled out a pen. Cool. I can write on them, that is sure to do something. Not the brightest thing to do, but hey, I had jumped off a cliff and not died so . . . might as well give it a try. I couldn’t just let Bobby die for us. I crept up to an Empusa who had her back to me. I closed my eyes hoping that I had had a good life or not be judged too harshly. I reached my hand to start writing (What should I write? Percy may he Rest in Peace or something like that) I took off the cap and a wicked awesome blade shot out, hitting the Empusa square in the spine on the way. She exploded into dust. I started at the space where she used to be. My pen had just turned into a sword and I just killed a monster. Could this day get any cooler?!
Then I realized the battle around me. There were only eight Empusa left. My brain immediately switched to autopilot. I was killing Empusa right and left, none of them seemed to even put up a long fight. Slash, block, step back, fake left, go right, and bam! There goes an Empusa back to Hades. After a minute I realized the only Empousa left was Kelli.
She hissed at me. “Curse you, Fish. You killed all my trainees. My new mistress has it in for you though, my young demigod. Good luck saving the world and your friends this time.” That set me off filled with anger, I charged her. We battled for a short amount of time, backing me up into a thick tree trunk. I lowered my sword, giving up, though I still had a plan.
“Not so powerful now, huh Fish? Just like my mistress predicted.” she stabbed downward to where my neck was. Time slowed down. Wait for it . . . at the last second, when the blade was nearly at my neck, I ducked. Her blade went flying into the tree trunk, where I was a millisecond before. She had so much power in her strike that her blade was stuck in the tree. I tripped her and got on top of her, my blade at her neck.
“You can tell your mistress to rethink that.” And with that I stabbed down at her throat. She exploded into dust and I got up from the ground. I looked to Bobby and Craig, who were staring at me with their mouths draping open.
“You trying to catch a meal with your mouth open so wide?” I joked. They both clamped them shut, though they looked amused at the joke.
Craig exploded with questions “How did you do that? How did you kill eight of those things? How did you survive that fall on the cliff? How did you save Ken?” with the mention of Ken I hurry and ran to him. Bobby dug in his backpack and immediately found some medicine he called nectar and ambrosia. That jogged a few blurry images in my mind. The most vivid one showed a girl (whose face I couldn’t see) lying down. She was in pain, and I cared a lot about her. We fed her some of that stuff. Then it was gone, the foggy memory replaced by a sharp headache.
Ken immediately came into consciousness. Bobby’s voice brought me back to reality “In answer to some of Craig’s questions. Those creatures are called empousa. Percy is obviously a trained and highly skilled half-blood. Percy, do you remember those empousa? they seemed to have recognized, and maybe even feared you.”
I shook my head “I don’t remember anything. Except that they called me Fish when they first met me, making me think they said freshman.” Bobby looked at me like I had gone crazy and said “Ok.” In that I don’t understand what you just said kind of way.
I am pretty sure the word half-blood brought a million of questions from Ken and Craig, but I kind of zoned out. This all seemed familiar. I heard several things like Mythology. Then Bobby got to his point “The Mythology you learn in school and such. It isn’t a myth. It is real, and we are a part of it. The Roman Gods are alive and ruling the worl-“
“Wait, wait, wait!” I interrupted “Roman Gods?” it seemed too wrong, like I believed something different before I lost my memory. Gods, but not Roman gods.
Bobby said “Yes, Roman Gods,” he continued, “I am son of Trivia goddess of magic.”
“You mean Hecate?” I asked.
“If you are behind the times and mean the Greek form. But the Greek Gods don’t exist anymore. So refer to her as Trivia, her Roman form.” He rudely stated.
“This isn’t right.” I argued.
“Yah, it is hard to get used to the idea of gods and all. Anyways I am here to take you to Tabara Semizeu, which is Romanian fo-”
“Camp Demigod” Craig and Ken answered at the same time. They both looked surprised and embarrassed at knowing this.
Bobby acted like it was normal, though he looked at me expectantly. “We just call it Tabara for short. I need to take you there now, before we attract anymore monsters. I need to schedule a plane ride to California.”
I had a bad feeling about that “Flying doesn’t seem like it would go well for me.” Bobby looked at me strange. “Just trust my gut feeling on this.” I said. Bobby shrugged.
“Okay, we will travel by boat. Besides, that is how the Romans preferred to travel, if they had the option. We switched to airplanes because it is so fast.” Bobby informed.
The boat ride was surprisingly normal, unnaturally normal. I had the feeling I was usually being attacked by monsters every hour or so. It was almost like the immortal person summoning all these monsters to me wanted me to get to this camp. Maybe it was because they didn’t think I had a high chance of getting out alive. That thought sent chills down my spine.
We got off the boat in California and Bobby hailed a taxi (I didn’t know they had many taxis here, but apparently they do). I didn’t pay any attention to where we were, I was too busy thinking. (Imagine that, me thinking) What was going on? What was my mysterious previous life? What things did this new camp hold for me?
The taxi stopped and we hopped out. We were in a forest with red wood trees.
“Are you sure you want me to drop you off here sir?” the confused taxi cab driver asked.
Bobby answered “Yes sir, thank you.” And with a shrug the taxi cab driver was gone. Bobby walked for a while, the rest of us following him. Suddenly a huge wall came into view. They were high and foreboding, as if they were yelling at me to stay out. I had an urge to run away, and not to enter, but of course I was an idiot and followed Bobby.
There were soldiers stationed at the top of the walls, I assumed they were on guard duty. I looked at their faces and wanted to hurl. They were so serious and stern. Their eyebrows were furrowed and lips in a tight line, their eyes serious and deadly. Great I am going to a camp with a bunch of strictly obsessed weirdoes.
We came to the gates. I stopped right before I stepped into the camp borders then looked down at my orange Camp Half-blood t-shirt. Gravity was trying to pull me away. Every particle in my body was screaming at me to turn back. Everything about this camp seemed so wrong. I thought the moment I would touch the other side, the ground would explode or send me flying away. Something dramatic like that. Determined I significantly set my foot down over the border. And I bet you can guess what happened. . .
sorry for the lame ending. please keep reading! and as before, write anything!
. .. And I bet you can guess what happened.
Absolutely nothing, though I did feel incredibly out of place.
Then I noticed my surroundings. The grounds were eerie looking and had a light fog floating over the ground. There was a luminous Roman styled building, a Roman temple, a coliseum, and an assortment of cabins. Soldiers-or demigods going about their regular duty where now coming to see the ‘new comers.’ It was like a parade.
Conversations were raging everywhere! Some said ‘Its him! He was on THE Television Show!’ I heard several girls whispering to each other. “Who’s the buff cutie with the messy black hair and dreamy green eyes?”, “I bet he is son of Venus”, “No way, he looks too powerful for Venus. His whole being radiates power.”, “I hope he doesn’t have a girlfriend.”, “Are you kidding me? He probably has a line of admirers AND a girlfriend.” I laughed out loud, they were probably Aphrodite’s kids- wait, Bobby said this was a Roman camp- Venus’ kids.
Everyone was glaring at me, like they didn’t trust me.
Bobby informed us to stay put while he went to look for someone.
The moment Bobby disappeared, everyone surrounded me and my friends in a large circle.
A HUGE guy stepped forward flanked by three uglies, and these guys were gigantic, especially the first guy. This guy was buff, like way bigger than Chuck Norris buff. His eyes seemed to be burning with a red fire. His face was mean and had several scars. His whole essence showed that he loathed my guts. I was glad I had made so many friends in the first few seconds here at camp.
He slowly swaggered up to me until his face was a foot away from mine and he towered above me.
“Hey punk, welcome to Camp Tabara. I am Matt, son of Mars, the God of war. I am gonna be kind and give you a welcoming ceremony. You should feel lucky, I don’t give all newbie’s this honor.” He said with a malicious smile. I got a nice view of his black stained teeth.
I didn’t back away but stood my ground firmly at his words.
“Aren’t I special?!” I said sarcastically, drawing a few snickers from the crowd. “But I think I will decline your generous offer, thank you and have a nice day.” I said like a Wal-Mart employee.
He calmly stepped back, unfazed. “I see, well it looks like your scrawny little friends will have to do. Which one should I skewer first?” He pulled out a four foot sword and ran towards Craig, who looked as pale as an empousa. Matt was going to KILL him! His words and actions filled me with anger. He was not going to hurt my friends when I could help it. Was I being stupid? Yes. Was I helplessly outmatched? Yes. Was I about to get skewered? Yes, but I didn’t care and wasn’t afraid.
I pulled out my wonderful pen (which no one saw, they were too busy watching a boy about to get murdered) and ran to intercept Matt’s sword. I caught the blade inches away from Craig’s heart, whose eyes were as large as a baseball. Matt’s eyes riveted to me. His smile spread across his ugly scared face.
“I knew you would come to your senses.” He sneered.
“Don’t make me fight you, I don’t want to cause any bad feelings-“ my voice faltered-
His face tensed and I predicted his next strike to my shoulder. I easily deflected it. He swiped at my feet; I jumped over his blade, and faked a slash to his right side. It worked, Matt went for it. I changed direction with a jerk and slightly injured his left side, only enough to scare him. I didn't want to fatally injure or kill him, despite his earlier intentions of killing my friends and I. He looked down at his shallow gash of the bright color of red on his purple shirt. The red fire in his eyes ignited to an even more malevolent flame. He signaled for his helpers flanking his side. The uglies drew their swords, though they looked worried.
Soon I was engaged in battle with three guys that were each two times my size. Blades were flying at me every second. Effortlessly, I dodged or met the sharp blades. I couldn’t help but notice how natural my movements felt. How normal this all seemed. I had disarmed two of them, but they kept arming themselves again with spears, knives, and gladius’. The battling went on for a short time, and I had managed to slightly injure all of them, though it took little effort. Not one of the uglies had drawn any of my blood. The crowd surrounding us seemed to be getting thicker. They seemed to grow hungrier for my blood to be spilt, I wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction.
Suddenly a girl bust out of the crowd into our fighting circle. “Lupa is coming!” She yelled. The fighting instantly stopped. The crowd dispersed slightly.
Matt was breathing heavily “You got lucky this time, brat. Next time I won’t be as forgiving. You and your friends better keep a sharp eye out.” He sneered.
Then a huge white and gray wolf parted through the crowd. Bobby followed closely after her who pointed to me, Craig, and Ken. I was utterly shocked when she spoke. “Come” she said, and that was all. She simply told us to follow her. It was weird listening to and following a wolf that could talk.
I couldn’t help but feel the eyes piercing my back. Everyone was glaring at us, with an angry gaze. Lupa led us to the Roman building. It was huge and had white pillars at the front entrance. Everything about this place seemed so wrong. I felt out of place.
We were led to a room where Lupa talked to us, explaining the rules of camp; how we would get claimed and blah, blah, blah. My ADHD came into effect. I completely zoned out, which was probably rude and not smart, but hey, don’t blame me. I noticed a picture of a boy with sky blue eyes and blonde shaggy hair. There was also a bronze plaque with a bunch of names. I think the top read something like this “In meBmory of thOAse wo dieed for the gHeater goUd.” My dyslexia blurred all the words together.
I came back to the conversation taking place. “Dakota will show you to the Mercury cabin until you are claimed.”
I couldn’t hold my tongue. “You mean Hermes cabin?”
Lupa stopped cold, frozen. She seemed disgusted at my word usage. “My suspicions have been confirmed, boy. Percy will stay here and discuss his future with me. Bobby, take Craig and Ken to Dakota, if you will.” She said cool, slow, and malevolently.
“Yes mistress,” Bobby said in a stern voice then saluted stiffly, giving a slight bow. And with that, I was alone in the room with a crazy talking wolf.
Lupa’s tone of voice changed “Percy, I understand you have no memories of your past. Is this true?”
Without hesitation I answered “Yes, that is true. I don’t remember anything.”
Lupa smiled wickedly “I just spoke to you in Greek, and you answered back in Greek. Greek’s do not survive at this camp.” Her hind quarters tensed up and she bounded towards me, her deathly sharp fangs and claws stretched out. She would have torn me to shreds, but an invisible force stopped her. She froze in midair then crumpled to the floor. A blinding white light entered the room. When my eyes adjusted to the light I saw a figure I knew was Hera- Juno.
She spoke with strong authority “Lupa, you are not to harm this hero. He is to be kept in perfect safety; I will hold you to it. Percy Jackson is the hero of Olympus, without him, the world would be suffering and under Kronos' rule at this very instant. I hate to admit that, but it is true. Despite my personal objections, Percy Jackson is Olympus’ only hope for the future.” I could tell those words tasted like vinegar, ”Do everything in your power to keep him safe.”
“Yes lady Juno.” Lupa said, through clenched teeth.
“I must go,” And with that Hera/Juno left.
There was an awkward silence; Lupa seemed to be sizing me up. “You are the hero of Olympus everyone is crazy about?”
I shrunk under her gaze “I don’t know, I don’t remember a thing about my past.”
“Hazel!,” Lupa yelled and instantly a girl burst through the door. I was suspicious that she had overheard our conversation. “Show Percy camp, then take him to the Mercury cabin, and introduce him to Dakota.”
“Yes ma’am.” Hazel said with the same salute bow thing Bobby did earlier.
The instant the door shut she said “You know something don’t you. Where is Jason? Why is Olympus suddenly silent?” I was careful to avoid eye contact as she backed me to the wall. She continued, “Why is there a new Oracle? How did the Gods defeat Kronos so fast after they destroyed Typhoon in the Titan war? Who are you? You obviously have had some serious sword training, where did you learn it? Are you a spy? Why don’t you remember your past?” She blushed, obviously embarrassed by the load of questions. Her face was a foot away from mine.
Then I noticed her eyes. Grey. Stunning, though not as strikingly beautiful as the ones I had seen last night. They sparkled, but didn’t have the same flame. They had sparks though they didn't have any fireworks in them. But they were shockingly similar.
“Uh, I don’t know.” I said stupidly.
“Sorry.” She apologized, a bright red glowing across her cheeks. “I will take you to Dakota now.”
I followed her down the hall then out of the building. She walked down a path leading further into the misty camp. I hurried to keep up with her.
She pointed at several things like the food pavilion.
“We have classes every day. The cabins have rotations for lessons. Some lessons include war tactics, archery, spear handling, sword fighting, rock climbing, roman mythology, and chariot racing. Another rotation is the fitness building, which is pretty much random stuff to help with fitness and training. There are weights, a swimming pool for laps, a track, different stuff like that.” She explained.
I wasn’t really interested in the tour. I was too consumed about those enchanting eyes. They kept haunting me. I also thought about my past, and how those eyes held me connected with my mysterious life.
“This cabin is the Mercury cabin. I guess you know where you go now.“ Hazel said, bringing me back to the present. I took in my surroundings and stopped in my tracks. I was surrounded by a circle of cabins. There were about 14 in a semicircle. There were two cabins at the head of it. But the cabin that held my attention was the one on the right. It was amazing. It had pearl looking stone on the outside. There were two pillars framing the entrance that were a pure wall of flowing salt water. There was a green glowing trident at the top of the door. I headed straight towards it.
“PERCY, STOP!THERE IS A CURSE!” Hazel yelled. She tried to tackle me, but I resisted. I pulled on the door handle. The door creaked slowly open.
Hazel’s mouth stood wide open. “How did you not die?”
“Come again?” I asked.
“Every time someone opens the door, let alone touches the stairs, they die or get seriously ill. There hasn’t been a son or daughter of Neptune for a long time. They are too powerful. Too dangerous. I guess the gods forbade Neptune to have any more kids.” She eerily answered.
“That doesn’t seem right,” I mused, “What about Zue-Jupiter?”
Her face became dark. It was like a heavy rain cloud had blocked the sunshine. “He had a son, named Jason.” Out of the blue tears sprung to her eyes.
“You said he had a son. What happened to him?”
She seemed to be having a hard time shaping the words “He disappeared a few days before the solstice.” And with that she burst into tears, I mean she was sobbing.
I didn’t know what to do, how to comfort her. Words wouldn’t suffice, and I don’t know what I would say. I hated seeing those eyes in such miserable pain. I had an urge to hold her, so I did. Her small body was shuddering so I held her tighter. I glanced around, relieved that no one was anywhere near. After a while I let go.
Those eyes looked into mine. “Thank you. That helped more than anything.” she said with a slight rosy touch to her cheeks.
I answered very intelligently "gha huh."
After an awkward silence, Hazel led me to the Mercury cabin and introduced me to Dakota, the head of the cabin.
Dakota was average height and had flaming red hair. “Welcome to Mercury cabin, your bunk is over there.” She pointed to the bunk farthest away from Craig and Ken. Great.I got settled with the few items I had. A trumpet sounded and the whole cabin marched to the door. They got in an orderly line, their backs stiff and faces gruff.
“What’s goin on?” I asked Dakota.
She explained, “Dinner time.”
My stomach growled in protest that I had missed lunch. “Sounds great!” I got in line next to Ken and Craig and hung back from the rest of the Mercury children.
Ken spoke “This has been the weirdest . . . strangest day ever.”
Craig answered “Tell me about it.”
“Oh you think so? This seems ordinary to me.” I said.
They laughed at my dry humor. It was strange, because this situation did seem familiar. I shrugged it off when I smelt food.
We walked into the pavilion and sat at the Mercury table. I glanced over at the Are-Mars table and saw Matt giving me the death glare. He seemed to be signaling: your dead punk. I smiled at him, which probably made him even angrier.
I looked down at my plate: burnt mush. I wanted to puke. Couldn’t they afford to cook better food than this, what a rip off! I wanted barbeque! I looked over at everyone digging in.
I spotted a bonfire. I got out of my seat and headed over to it. When I got to the fire I scraped a portion of my rotten dinner into the flames. I silently prayed: sorry for the disgusting food. Um, could you give me a little hint on my past? Please?
I stood up to see every person in the pavilion staring at me like I was a lunatic.
“Um, Percy? What are you doing?” Hazel asked.
“Giving an offering to the gods. They like the smell, and it shows our appreciation for everything they give us.” I answered feeling dumber every second. I looked back at blank faces. Then everyone started to laugh, hysterically, making me feel worse. Matt was laughing the loudest and yelled out “What a loser.” My face growing hot, I returned to my table.
Ken and Craig comforted me “It is okay. I thought it made sense to give an offering to the gods.”
“Yeah, whatever. It’s cool.”
I ate a bit of mush, forcing it down my throat. It was terrible Someone yelled excitedly “Everyone QUIET! We have reception!” Everyone whispered eagerly and turned to a tv screen.
“What is goin on?” Ken asked Dakota.
“After the Titan War, the Mercury cabin stole some cables from the gods’ news station. The Minerva cabin did all the wirering stuff to send a signal here, so we could feel a little more updated on the magical world around us. Honestly I don’t know how it works, I was never good in school. Anyways, the reception is really bad, and we only get bits and pieces of the God’s news. It's even more exciting now that Olympus is silent.”
“Does Lupa know about this?” Craig asked.
“Are you kidding? If Lupa knew she would tear us into shreds, no joke. Then she would mutter that ‘the secret’ could have been uncovered.” She responded.
“What kind of stuff is on it?” I asked.
“Oh anything really,” Dakota said, “There is an Oprah type show, interesting clips on demigod fights in the past or present, news in general, you know, stuff like that.”
Another kid from the Mercury cabin told us to shut up. I turned my eyes to the slightly fuzzy screen.
There was a lady sitting behind one of those news desks you see on mortal TV. She had a cheery voice “I am Angelia on News for Gods bringing you the most recent news of the world we rule.”
I leaned over to Dakota, and whispered “Who is Angelia?”
“She is daughter of Mercury, the goddess of messages.”
It was showing random clips of the Gods playing games while being cooped up at Olympus. It looked pretty boring. Athe-Minerva was playing life size chess with Her-Mercury, who wasn’t doing very well. Neptune and Apollo were surfing on a portable beach. You get the picture.
The screen showed Angelia again. “As you can see, things are pretty boring now, especially after the Titan War. Speaking of the Titan War, we have one of our brightest heroes from the Titan War with us today. She is beyond genius and is the Architect of Olympus. Here she is now to talk with us.” The screen moved over to reveal a seriously beautiful girl with blonde hair curled like a princess. Her features were perfect, but you could also tell she was hardened from many battles. My pulse was going crazy, my heart hammering against my ribs.
“I know her.” I said in a whisper, which turned out louder than I thought. Now everyone was looking at me (again).
“Percy, are you sure? What is her name?” Hazel asked.
“Annabeth Chase.” My tongue sounded with perfect ease. I was surprised to hear the longing in my voice, how I lingered on her name. My voice seemed to caress the syllables of her name with- caring?
I only remembered her name. Nothing else. No memories. Nothing. Just a name. What was she to me? A friend, a best friend, sister, cousin, enemy? No not enemy, I knew that for sure. I felt better connected to her. I was going insane.
Sure enough, Angelia announced her name “Annabeth Chase. Tell us about your recent designs for Olympus.”
Her perfect, sweet, yet tough voice spoke “I am currently planning monuments for all the Gods. They all have their own special touch and personality to them. I also am making a significant monument for my best friend.-“ she took a shaky breath then pulled herself together “-The hero of Olympus.”
I thought nothing of it. I only would realize my clue weeks later. So much could have been saved if I would have caught on to that clue. There wouldn’t have to have been any loss. Why was I so slow?! If I would have been sharper, I could have saved them. I wouldn’t feel this incredibly empty pain.
Annabeth started talking about architecture plans, and my eyes glossed over. You might be thinking that it was rude or inconsiderate not to pay attention to her. How it was showing that I didn’t care. I do care, but try to understand me. She used words like: apse, buttress, cloister, cornice, cupola, dado, frieze, loggia, lunette, narthex, plinth, portico, quoin, tracery, trefoil . .. you get the point. Now you don’t blame me for zoning out and can understand where I am at. I bet you zoned out too.
The connection on the TV went fuzzy then out all together. Everyone groaned in disappointment, got up and left. I stayed there with Hazel, Dakota, Bobby, Craig, and Ken.
“We record every time we get connection, in case we aren’t eating. We don’t want to miss anything important.” Hazel said.
Bobby spoke “Percy, you were on The Television show many times, though the connection always went bad, so we don’t know anything about you.”
“Jason was on it once.” Dakota said softly. All sound stopped. After a very uncomfortable silence Hazel finally spoke through the tension.
“We should all get a good night’s sleep, tomorrow is a big day.” she said.
“What’s tomorrow?” Craig asked.
“The beginning of the yearly tournament. We start out with a task for everyone. Several who do the best move on. More and more people get eliminated until there are only two people. They fight in front of everyone in the coliseum.”
“Oh. . . goody.” Ken retorted.
Craig, Ken, and I walked out of the pavilion into the pitch dark. We talked little while we went to our cabins.
“Hey Percy, maybe we can find some hotties tomorrow.” Ken said hopefully.
“Naw man, none of them would like me.” I said, low in spirits.
“Oh contare. They love you. I need you to start the conversation. You come up with the best pick up lines, common man.” He persuaded.
“How ‘bout Craig or Bobby?” I suggested.
He screwed his face in disgust. “They would scare them away.”
“Even if I wanted to, we can’t. There’s the contest thing tomorrow.”
“If they had a contest on wining a line of admirers, you my boy, would win by a landslide.” He said perfectly serious.
I laughed it off and went into the Mercury cabin.
I went to my bunk and sank into the covers, my legs hanging off by half a foot. I noticed every single time someone glanced over at me, as if they didn’t trust me. I didn’t trust them either. Their eyes were too shifty, like they were looking for every opportunity to pick pocket someone.
My eyes closed slowly and I drifted to sleep. And my dreams troubled me.
It was underground somewhere and there were two women in the room.
One looked asleep. She had clothes made of dirt, and she had a veil covering her eyes. The other had brown eyes and had an icy cold manner.
The earth woman spoke in her sleepy voice. “We need him to remember his past. The more Jackson remembers, the more danger he puts himself in. He will destroy those on the quest with him, who are a big threat to me. What do you think Khione?”
“I think that is an excellent plan, mistress Gaia.”Khione answered.
“Call Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasus in.” (The Gods of dreams)
Khione called them. Three men walked in, who all had a dreamy look. They bowed as Gaia instructed them.
“You will be playing some mind games with our dear friend Jackson.” She said with dry sarcasm. “Phobetor you need to create those dreams which reflect this young hero’s fear. Phantasus make them tricky, make the unreal seem real. And Morpheus: shape his dreams to perfection.”
“Yes mistress Gaia.” They bowed and left swiftly, discussing their tactics.
My dream faded out. I woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily.
I woke up to look at the sun blaring through my window. I loved sunny mornings. It was perfect for the tournament today.
Yesterday had been the best day of my life. I guess it had a little to do with the most gorgeous guy I have ever seen showing up at camp Tabara. To make it better, he had held me to his warm muscular body. I felt his muscles through his shirt. When he held me I felt so secure, so sure of everything. The ache I had felt before was replaced by a fluttering butterfly.
I walked out of the Minerva to wait for Percy. I stood out in the warm sun by his cabin. The door opened and Percy finally came out. The sun was blaring like a nova and he was blinded. I got the strangest feeling. Just then Percy ducked swiftly. A dart pierced the cabin where his neck had been a moment before. Someone had tried to kill him with a poison dart. Jerk! Shaking it off he started to walk towards the pavilion for breakfast.
I came in step with him. “Hey” I said with a huge smile.
He smiled a crooked grin, showing his perfect white teeth. “Hey Hazel.” Wow he was sure cool for having almost died a second before.
“You ready for the big tournament?”
“Ha, can you ask that to a guy who just came to a new world and now is forced to fight for his life?” he joked.
I laughed. “My two friends Reyna and Gwen will be back for the competition. They were gone yesterday searching for Jason. Maybe you can meet them.”
“Sounds cool.”
Someone called my name. I looked back to see Reyna and Gwen waving to me. “I see them right now.” I called them over.
“Percy this is Reyna, only daughter of Pluto, and now the best fighter at camp.” Reyna glared at him coolly. She was tall and buff. She had dark black hair and her eyes were dark with shadows in them. Her face was pale and she looked like she hadn’t slept for a while.
“I know someone very much like you.” He responded. His arms instantly shot to his forehead as if he had a sudden headache, then it passed.
I raised my eyebrow in question then said “This is Gwen, daughter of Jupiter. She is Jason’s half sister” I said casually, forcing no emotion into my voice. I realized my mistake and glanced at Reyna, to see her reaction. She was only glaring at Percy.
Percy went to shake Gwen’s hand and looked in her eyes. He doubled over in pain, now sprawled out on the ground.
“Percy!” I helped him back up then he looked fine. Why was he acting so weird? What was his deal? Acting strange in front of my friends, who would think he is weak (Which he was not). “You okay?”
“Yah, deja vu or something. I will see you around Hazel.” He said.
“Kay bye.” He left massaging his head.
“Wow what a loser,” Reyna said. “Where did you find that wimp?”
“He isn’t a wimp, Reyna, he is actually a really cool guy.” I defended.
“Right.” Gwen retorted. They wished me luck on the competition then left.
I talked strategy my siblings during breakfast and kept on glancing over at the Minerva table. I hoped Percy would show my friends that they were wrong about him. Show his incredible skill that he displayed while fighting Matt. I had wondered who his godly parent was. Just as long as he wasn’t my half brother or son of Neptune I would be fine.
All the campers walked over near the coliseum to hear the first challenge of the tournament. They announced the first challenge would be a relay (It usually was). The steps would follow in this order: hit a bull’s eye in archery, Kayaking across the lake, and running three miles. I could do this easy.
Everyone lined up n a large line. Everyone looked determined. I worked my way over to Percy and wished him luck. He looked nervous. “Why on earth are you nervous?” I asked him.
“I don’t think I am very good at archery,” he replied.
“You never know until you try.” But I was nervous. What if he did show he was a wimp?
Lupa announced “Soldiers take your positions.” Everyone grabbed a bow and several arrows “On my mark. Get ready. GO!”
Everyone sprang into action. I scrambled to get my arrow notched. I lined up my target and after three tries, I hit it straight in the bull’s eye. Dang Apollo kids were already grabbing their kayak. I was surprised to see Craig already loading onto one. I grabbed my kayak and started rowing like a madman.
I looked around for Percy on the water, but he wasn’t there. When I was about three fourths the way across the lake I glanced on the shore to see Percy still trying to hit the bull’s eye. There were only four other people still on archery with him. I felt sorry for him, but I couldn’t lose focus. I was determined to place in the top 5 soldiers this year.
My arms were aching but I forced them to keep rowing. I finally hit land and pulled my kayak to land. I instantly started bolting. There was only one person in front of me. Who was it? I looked at their features. Tall, muscular, messy black hair. . . could it seriously be- No way, it was impossible, he couldn’t have rowed that fast. He turned around and I saw his green eyes. It was Percy. Of all the stupid. . . ugh! He drove me insane.
I kept on running, my lungs wanting to explode. The finish line was less than a fourth a mile away. No one was behind me for a long ways. I moved slightly to my right to avoid a ditch in the road. Percy was only a few yards straight ahead of me. Then an arrow whizzed into my side- there was a sharp pain. I let out a scream and fell to my knees. The arrow was intended for Percy, but I got in the way. Percy turned around and his face twisted into terror. He ran to me and pulled out the arrow. It killed but I forced myself to stay conscious. “Take me to the finish line, we can alert someone there.” I forced to strain out.
“It will be too late by then.”
“We have no other choice.” Even as I said it, I felt myself slipping away.
“Yes we do.” He said, determined. He carried me in his arms away from the trail into the trees. What was he doing?! Didn’t he realize I was DYING? There was no help in the trees.
“Where are you going?” I whispered weakly.
“Trust me.” He ran me to a stream close to the path and placed me in. The cold water shocked me as it ran over my shoulders and to my injured torso. I instantly felt better. I could feel the injury closing up, there was no more pain. I stood up then fell, Percy catching me.
“We have a race to finish.” I said.
He supported my weight, and together we crossed the finish line in fourth place.
Write any ideas, suggestions. . . you name it.
A line of admirers came up to Craig complementing his archery skills. Then it came: he was claimed. A holographic lyre appeared above his head glowing a proud gold. He had a huge smile.
The list of who would be going on: Cecilly, Brad, Dallin, Derek, Hailee, Reece, Kurt, Angela Dakota, Craig, Matt, Bobby, Gwen, Reyna (who had arrived just in time for the race), Percy and I. Ken didn’t make it, and I felt a little sorry for him, but he was new so. . .
I was left to wonder, how did Percy heal me? That was incredible. Could he be son of Apollo? I immediately canceled that option out. No way, he was terrible at archery.
The next challenge was rock climbing the lava wall then riding a Pegasus back down.
This activity flew by. Those remaining: Derek, Gwen, Reyna, Matt, myself, and Percy. I was really proud that Percy was coming along so well. I was concerned for his well being when he started talking to his Pegasus. Other than that he had no injuries.
The next challenge had to do with strategy. This was my field. I wasn’t so sure about Percy, but I think he proved plenty to my friends already. He made it into the top 6!
The six of us were lead to our challenge. Almost all of camp Tabara was there to watch.
Lupa described our challenge with all the rules. There was a pole thirty feet away. The pole had a bolder on top of it. You had to move the bolder while still being thirty feet away from it. You could use any method to move the bolder.
I planned out my strategy quickly. Matt would go first, followed by Gwen, Derek, me, Percy, then Reyna.
Matt helplessly failed. He threw a large rock at it, hoping his strength would knock it off.
Gwen simply summoned wind to knock it off. I was surprised to see that she had enough power to knock it off.
Derek was son of Vulcan. He pulled out random scrap metal to design a metal stick 30 feet long. He tried to push the bolder off with that, but it was too heavy.
Lupa called out my name “Hazel” it was my turn.
I pulled out a javelin. I aimed carefully, so the javelin would hit the bolder in just the right spot. If I was a inch off, it wouldn’t work. I pulled my javelin back than flung it. I watched it soar through the air then hit its target at the perfect spot. The bolder tumbled to the floor.
It was Percy’s turn. I wondered what he would do. I braced myself for him to be humiliated like Matt and Derek had been. Percy walked up to the 30 foot line. He stood his ground firmly and simply sat there, with a look of heavy concentration. Then it smoothed into a look of peace. The audience was silent. Everyone was waiting to see what Percy did. Then a roar filled the whole building. The ground started shaking like crazy; the strongest was right where the pole was. The pole was shaking madly the bolder tipped then plummeted to the floor shattering into smaller pieces. Then the shaking stopped. Percy was on one knee then got up. There was silence in the audience.
Lupa broke the silence by yelling “Reyna!”
Reyna summoned skeletons which shook the pole. The bolder fell. Everyone clapped madly.
“Congratulations to Gwen, Hazel, Reyna” she paused “and Percy.” She spat out, I could tell she resented him. “These demigods will duel each other tomorrow as follows: Hazel against Reyna, and Percy against Gwen. The winner of each will play each other in the finals. You are dismissed.” Everyone stood up and chattered excitedly.
I glanced at Percy, who seemed a little dizzy, but fine besides that. I was in awe. He was amazing; little did I know he had more tricks up his sleeve.
Percy-
I was exhausted. I wanted to go straight to the Mercury cabin and drop. The earthquake had drained a lot of my energy. I walked back to my cabin through herds of people, most of them looking at me. They didn’t know what to think of me, I didn’t know what to think of them. I felt in so much danger here. So out of place. Everyone was so serious, disciplined, some of them full of anger. I felt like I was an easy going class clown type guy. I hadn’t been here 2 full days and there had already been several attempts to kill me.
I finally reached my cabin and walked in. All talking stopped. I stood in the doorway meeting everyone’s gazes, staring them all down. Then I crossed the room to my bunk, fell on it, and instantly went to sleep.
The faces of Gaia, Khione, Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasus floated over me. The last three seemed to be laughing. My world started spinning then I dreamed of Annabeth. Only small clips of her. She was walking up a hill to her family awaiting her. She was arguing over a chariot with me. She was swimming to her death to the Sirens. I was holding her under water with wax in my ears. Annabeth falling off a cliff tackling a monster. Dancing with her on Olympus, her fingering my grey streak of hair. . . then it all had to stop. Someone else was trying desperately to stop the memories from coming back. Then Hera’s face floated over me “Try to resist the memories, my young hero.” She told me.
Yeah right. Like I would try to stop seeing the most gorgeous girl I have ever seen. Like I would shun the most important memories of my past.
I woke up with a headache, as usual. It seemed I constantly had that pain. My head was always being compressed on all sides.
I realized it was morning; I had slept through dinner then all the way through the night. My stomach rumbled hungrily. I crept past all the Mercury kids still asleep and headed to the pavilion.
There was one solitary person there. It was Reyna. I went over to talk to her.
“Good luck today.” I wished her.
“Look wimp. I don’t know who you are, but you are not to be trusted.” She walked up to me and grabbed my shirt “I know you have something to do with Jason’s disappearance. I think you are a spy, sent to ruin us. You definitely have had training, and you have serious power. I don’t trust you. For all I care I should send you to my father.” She spat.
Hazel came at the opportune moment. “Reyna? What are you doing? Get off of Percy.” Reyna pushed me away from her.
“I hope Gwen slaughters you today.” She cursed.
“I hope you win today. Then I can show who is boss in the finals.” I stared her down and she walked away.
“Sorry about her. She is just upset about Jason.” Hazel apologized.
“It’s okay. She doesn’t bother me.” I shrugged “I guess I won’t see you till after the fight.”
She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “For luck.” She blushed then ran off.
I didn’t know what to think. I felt like I betrayed someone important.
During breakfast Ken talked my ear off on strategies and plenty good lucks. A bunch of Venus girls walked by us giggling. “Good luck today Percy. Maybe we can party with you after the fight, you might need some cheering up.”
Everyone gathered to the coliseum to watch the semifinal fights. Reyna and Hazels fight was before mine. I was to wait in the coliseum’s tunnels while they fought. I wanted to be in the audience so I could watch Hazel. I was forced to be behind the door listening to all the ruckus of the fight. Lupa made some announcements and stated the rules. “You may pick any weapon, but you only get one. If you choose you may have battle gear. You may use any powers but no extra magic items, unless that is your one weapon. Fighters. . . Begin!”
The crowd burst with excitement. I could hear blades crashing together at a fast pace. I was going insane, I had to know what was going on. I heard the gasps and ooohs and aahhs, and was forced to drive myself crazy wondering if they were good or bad for Hazel. The climax of the noise hit a maximum, and then I could tell. Someone had lost. Who was it?! Then Lupa announced “Congratulations. You will be going to the finals Reyna. Good battle.”
My heart dipped. Hazel had lost; I hope she wasn’t injured too seriously. The gate in front of me rolled open slowly. I had my first glance into the arena. It was a large circle with arch patterns around the base walls. There was a gate ahead of me that Gwen was walking out of.
We walked to the center and shook hands. She pulled me in closer and whispered “Just because you are new, I won’t take it easy on you. Thought I would warn you. See you in the infirmary after this?”
“I wouldn’t bet on it.” I replied calmly.
Lupa asked us if we wanted armor. Gwen took some.
“I don’t think I will need it.” Lupa raised her eyebrow. I felt so sure of it, though I knew it was suicidal.
“Weapons?” she asked. Gwen took out a Spatha (a long sword).
“Just my pen” I took out my pen and the crowd roared with laughter. I smiled at what they didn’t know. Ken and Craig were shaking their heads, looking white.
“What you gonna do Percy? Write on me? I am trembling with fear.”
I smiled kindly, loving the joke I was sharing with myself.
“Fighters. . . Begin!” Lupa announced.
I tried to switch up my offence and defense making it an uneven pattern, so she wouldn’t get used to it. I seemed to be frustrating her. I found many chinks in her armor but she showed no pain.
Wind was pushing my blade away from her. Her blade was longer than mine so I couldn’t seem to land any blows. She slashed at my blade and caught me off guard. Riptide flew out of my hand and Gwen grinned. She shot a bolt of electricity at me. I kicked her away from me and felt my gut tighten. Huge waves of water appeared out of nowhere and crashed on top of Gwen. The whole fighting part of the coliseum was full of water, except where I stood on dry ground. The sensation in my gut loosened and the water disappeared leaving the ground dry.
Gwen was on her hands and knees coughing up water. Riptide appeared in my pocket and I walked over to her and placed my blade near her throat. I looked and Lupa.
“…Congratulations Percy, you will advance to the finals.” There were a few people here and there that cheered for me. I think most people hated me though.
Lupa announced the match would take place in 30 minutes. I looked for Hazel, who was running towards me. I let out a sigh of relief, she wasn’t hurt, just a few minor bandages on her arms. I thought she was going to jump into my arms, but she stopped abruptly like she didn’t know if she should or not.
“You are all right.” I sighed in relief.
“You’re son of Neptune.” She said like she didn’t want to believe it.
Son of Poseidon, I thought. It seemed more natural. Son of Neptune sounded so strange, so unnatural. I looked down in embarrassment. I knew the feud Athena had had with Poseidon, and Minerva and Neptune were basically the same people, just in a different form.
“Well. . .” we stood in silence. Hazel shook her head in disbelief.
“I don’t know what to think, or say.” She paused. “Well, you should get ready for the fight.”
I went back through the tunnels of the coliseum to the door. I noticed something in my pocket. It was a necklace with beads on it, but one bead stood out from the rest. It was the Empire State building. It had names engraved on it. Some of them that stood out were Silena Beauregard and Charles Beckendorf. The bead brought a gloomy feeling to my heart. My thoughts were interrupted by Lupa starting the opening ceremony.
She announced Reyna and I. The gate in front of me opened slowly. I looked across the arena at Reyna, who looked malicious and deathly.
who are your favorite characters?
what are your opinions of Jason?
Do you like Piper and Jason's relationship? or Jason and Reyna?
Any other thoughts and opinions.
I have ideas for the next few chapters but i am not sure how you would feel about it. . . i want to make this as good as possible and need your opinions! Thanks for your feedback.
Percy was looking at me from across the arena. He looked down and depressed. I glared at him and he gazed back. I hated how he was so calm and peaceful. The sunny day with no clouds didn’t make it any better.
We walked towards each other and stood a half a foot away from each other. I made the mistake of looking into his eyes. Those sea green breathtaking eyes. His eyes told a lot about himself. They showed all the pain and happiness that he had been through. They showed success and his personality. My heart started pounding. STUPID. Stop, it’s a trick. He is the bad guy. I forced my heart to stand still and met Percy’s eyes.
“Shake hands.” Lupa ordered.
I squeezed his hand hard trying to crush it, he squeezed back.
I took armor, he didn’t. I took my gladius, he took his pen/sword.
“Fighters . .. “ tension was heavy in the air. Everyone was in anticipation. “Begin!”
I charged him and met his blade. He looked at my face then at my eyes. “Nico.” He whispered. Why did he always say that?! I caught him off guard and swung at his arm. It made contact but bounced off harmlessly. My arm almost went out of its socket. We both stood with our eyes wide. The crowd gasped. He had taken on the curse of Achilles. If he had survived the dip in sticks, he was strong.
He recovered fast and started swinging at me. Our swords clashed and clung. I called four skeletons to serve me. They popped up from the ground and fought Percy, but they only lasted a moment. My new strategy: Make him angry, most people get reckless when they are mad. We kept fighting while I taunted him.
“Gwen and I think you’re the biggest wimp.” He wasn’t even fazed.
“Hazel said you were the biggest jerk.” He looked hurt, but brushed it off.
“No one trusts you here.” I seethed.
“People trust and like me somewhere else. That’s more than you can say.” He replied calmly.
“I heard you saw a blondie from your past on the TV. Is she a spy like you too? I bet she is weak like you. She’s probably a shallow brat.” His face instantly went cold and dangerous. I had hit a nerve.
“Don’t. talk. about Annabeth. that way.” He growled. I should have dropped it, but my pride kept me going.
“I bet she doesn’t even miss you. Let alone realize you are gone.”
Percy let out a destructive yell. Winds started picking up, rain started pouring. I had made him angry. But it wasn’t a reckless anger, it was a powerful anger. Instead of weakening him, I had strengthened him, given a fire for him to fight with.
In a matter of a few seconds, a full hurricane raged in the coliseum. Everyone’s hat and loose items were caught in the wind and whipped off. Huge waves of rain crashed down. Percy was in the eye of the storm. His eyes had a blaring fire in them. He stood with his arms out stretched with a sense of authority. He had full control over this storm. I was pulled off my feet and flew into a marble arch. My vision got blurry I concentrated and my vision improved.
My better judgment for my safety overpowered my pride. “Percy, stop!” I yelled.
Miraculously, he heard me over the howling winds. Everything stopped in an instant. The sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Dead silence. I looked at Percy’s eyes. They were peaceful and calm. He wasn’t angry anymore. There was no more dangerous fire in them.
Then I did something that surprised even me. I smiled. “I guess it’s clear who the best fighter and most powerful demigod is.”
The crowd went nuts! They didn’t care that he was totally dangerous, and might even be a spy. They had witnessed an incredibly intense fight. Percy walked over to me and helped me to my feet.
“Sorry.” He apologized. “I should save that for my real enemies.”
“Don’t be sorry. You taught me a lesson. You are way out of my league.” He laughed perfectly with a wonderful smile lighting his eyes. I forced a laugh, though I knew it was true in more than one way. . .
“Percy wins the tournament this year for the best soldier.” She had a hard time facing the facts, like this was an outrage, an insult.
Out of nowhere thick green mist floated around the coliseum. All celebrating stopped, this wasn’t a good sign. The mist pranced delicately and mysteriously in various designs.
“What is that?” Percy whispered.
“This happens when we see the oracle.”
Soon enough the same face appeared in the Iris Message. You see, the oracle always appeared as a mummy on the Iris messages. But last time, for the next great prophesy, there was a new oracle. She had frizzy bright orange hair and freckles. Here she was again. In her creepy voice she said:
“Son of the sea use caution of the giant
To the north to stop the rise defiant
Owl, eagle, trident, and shadows peace or death will cherish
Tricks of the mind then child of the owl shall perish.”
The image faded. Lupa called for a meeting.
I was ready to drop, but now I was head of my cabin. Yipee! (Coated with heavy sarcasm) I was the only person in the Neptune cabin (which apparently had a curse on it until now-don’t ask).
All the counselors were heading out of the coliseum. I walked through the crowd which parted in front of me; no one wanted to get in my way. There wasn’t a single person that wasn’t looking at me. No wait that guy isn’t- nope he just looked.
Ken waved to me. He was standing in a group of girls. A hologram appeared above his head. It was a dove. Ken was the son of Venus.
The meeting was held in the Roman temple. There was a room that looked awfully like Court. Lupa sat at the judges seat. All of the head counselors were there, including Gwen, Reyna, Hazel, Matt, Dakota, and others whose name I didn’t know.
The meeting was disgustingly formal with the national anthem and everything. Lupa said stuff with fancy wording so I had no idea what she was talking about. Something about a new oracle and what that meant. I actually enjoyed ADHD at times. I looked around for a while until Lupa said something that I could understand. “Before we move to the most important subject do we have any questions?”
Dakota raised her hand “Why hasn’t Percy been claimed?”
“He has been claimed.” Everyone looked confused. Lupa went on “Just not here at this camp. Percy was claimed a long time ago.”
More questions aroused Lupa cut them off and changed the subject to safer grounds
“Moving on, who will go on this quest?”
Hazel raised her hand and Lupa called on her. “The prophesy specifically says owl, eagle, and shadows. It mainly is talking to the son of the sea.” Everyone looked at me, Hazel continued “That means Minerva, Jupiter, Pluto, and Neptune’s children must go.”
Reyna raised her hand “That’s four people, not a good number.” she pointed out. Everyone nodded in agreement. “But the prophesy specifically said those four.”
Lupa spoke “The only children of the Big 3 are Percy, Reyna, and Gwen. Child of Minerva?”
I remembered the last line: child of the owl shall perish. I shuddered. Hazel raised her hand with slight hesitancy.
“Excellent, Hazel. You are a part of this quest. Okay, there isn’t a time limit mentioned, but as always the sooner the better. You will leave tomorrow before lunch. Questions?” No one raised their hands. “Court adjourned.” Everyone left.
That was a weird meeting. I went into my new cabin. It was empty. Solitary, and strangely I was fine with it. I was too tired to look around much; I just collapsed on my cold bunk.
post soon
Camp half blood was busy with campers rushing about the Argo II. They all were anxious to find their leader Percy Jackson. Whoever this guy was, he was important, and everyone was crazy in love with him. I wanted to meet him, he might be more friendly than a certain person around here.
Jason was acting strange lately. He had grown distant. He would talk to me if I started a conversation, but he made it hard. His answers would be short and abrupt. It tore my heart. Why were boys so stupid?
My thoughts were interrupted by Chance, son of Athena. He was talking to Annabeth (who I was surprised to see, since she worked nonstop on the ship). Boy could Chance talk your ear off. He was nine years old and extremely annoying but cute. He also had a sharp memory. He could remember the exact words of what someone had told him a week ago. I heard he had come to camp in September. A satyr was bringing him over half blood hill when a Cyclops appeared. Chance talked so much that the Cyclops was disgusted and went away. I don’t believe it though.
“I think we should work way hard on the ship and finish it way fast. We can do it easy. Then we leave earlier than the summer solstice and get Percy back sooner. I think everyone would like that. My plan is sooo much better than leaving at the summer solstice, which is too long of a ways away. Everyone would be happy. We’d be done more sooner so we don’t have to work in the hot sun. Percy would be back home. I would have my best friend back sooner. And you would have your best friend back more soon-“
He stopped and blushed. I walked over and put my arm around Annabeth. She shook it off and said “Chance, we need to work on your grammar.” He sighed. “Hey run off and help with the ship, I need to talk with Piper.” He smiled brightly, hugged Annabeth, and ran off.
“He sure knows how to talk.” I laughed.
She smiled “I love him. His talking keeps my thoughts away from other things. . . I don’t know what I’d do without him. So, is Jason improving?” she asked. She had become my shoulder to cry on. I always counted on her to help me on anything, especially the topic of Jason.
I sighed “No.” Annabeth frowned in thought.
“I think he might be distant because he remembers more of his past.” She said looking uncomfortable. I nodded for her to go on “There might have been someone, like a . . . girl, in his past that . . . who might have. . . well. . .” she decided against what she was going to say “It may just be the whole Roman Greek thing.” I nodded.
“Or maybe he just doesn’t like me.” I suggested
“I am going to go to him right now and smack some sense into that bozo. I am going to beat him up until he opens his eyes and actually sees you. My goodness Piper! You’re a knockout!” this was coming from the most stunning girl both inside and out.
I blushed “Don’t do or say anything to him!”
“Only if you talk to him today.”
“No”
“Yes! Ask what got into him and find out why he is being a jerk.” She stared me down with her intense storm grey eyes.
“Fine.”
“Good, I finally talked some sense into you.” I hugged Annabeth, she always knew what to do.
I was going to talk to him tonight. Whew, breathe. I was walking fast to my cabin. I was so nervous I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. I rounded the corner and ran into someone. It was Jason, great. I felt my face grow hot. Why have I been blushing like this lately?
“Oh sorry Piper.”
“It’s ok.” He started walking away. I decided now was as good a time as ever. “Jason I was just looking for you.”
He looked at me strange “You were? ‘bout what?” I didn’t want to talk here. I lead him into the forest near Zeus’ fist.
I exploded “What’s wrong with you? Ever since after the quest you’ve been distant. What happened? Did I do something, say something?”
He shifted his weight like he did when he was nervous. “Look, Piper. I have been getting a few of my memories back.” Annabeth had guessed that.
“That’s good, right?” I asked.
“Well. . .” he dived right in, “I think I had a girlfriend before I met you.” My world tipped. “But the thing is I don’t remember her that much. I don’t remember my feelings for her, so I don’t have any right now. I am confused because I feel like I should be true to her.”
“Then go back to your girlfriend. There shouldn’t be any confusion.” It killed me to say it. I didn’t want to let him go, even if he was a jerk.
“That’s only part of my confusion.”
“What’s the other part?” I asked.
“I have feelings for someone else.” He stated simply and cautiously. I was immediately inflamed with anger. My face was growing hot with jealous anger.
“Who?” I demanded. It came out harsher than I meant it to.
His face blushed for the first time. He looked uncomfortable, and seemed to be having a hard time with working up words. “Well, you Piper.” My heart fluttered weakly. I walked to him and leaned in, this was going to be it. My first real kiss with Jason. We were interrupted by a yell “Piper! Jason!” in the distance. I shot back and Leo came into view. “There you are beauty queen and Jay Jay.”
“Don’t call me that” Jason growled through gritted teeth.
“Alrighty whatever you say Jay Jay. Let’s take you to anger management Jay Jay.” He laughed then stiffened up “Am I interrupting anything?” realizing it for the first time.
We didn’t say anything. Leo looked at his feet and apologized.
Trying to save him from embarrassment I asked “What were you coming to tell us?”
He looked up excitedly. “Chiron wants to talk to you guys and a few other campers. I think he’s discovered something. Jason, go get Annabeth. We will meet you at the Big House.”
Jason-
I looked for Annabeth in the Athena Cabin but she wasn’t there. I asked one of her siblings where she might be.
“She probably is in the Poseidon’s Cabin,” he suggested “-looking for clues of course.” But we both knew why she really would be in there.
I walked there and the door was opened slightly. Annabeth’s back was facing me. Wanting to be comforting I put my hand on her shoulder. She sprang in surprise. The next moment my face met Annabeth’s fist. My vision blurred. When it finally cleared I was looking at the ceiling. She was sitting on my chest pinning me down with her blade at my neck. I put my hand to my eye and touched it tenderly.
“Oh Jason, it’s you! I am so sorry. I wasn’t thinking clearly and you scared me.” Annabeth rattled on. “I guess you’re wondering what I am doing here . . . I’m. . . looking for clues.” She decided. “Oh, that really doesn’t look good, can I get you some ice?” Her eyes looked puffy. I was suspicious that she had been crying.
“You spend too much time around Chance, he’s rubbing off on you. Chiron wants to talk to a few of us. He might have a clue or something.” Her face lit up like she had one word on her mind ‘Percy.’
Several cabin leaders were gathered around the ping pong table. I sat next to Piper and noticed Annabeth raise an eyebrow. Piper started fussing about my black eye. At first she was furious. “Who did this to you?” blah, blah, blah. I told her it was Annabeth and she instantly shut up, though she said stuff like “It’s so puffy and swollen. It must kill.” and it started to hurt worse.
Chiron walked in talking with Rachel. The room became quiet. “I summoned all the cabin leaders that knew Percy best.” I looked around the room at everyone’s sullen faces. Everyone had circles under their eyes. They were burned out from looking for their leader, refusing that he was lost or dead. They wanted to believe my theory that he was at the other camp.
Chiron took a long and sad breath “We need to-“ he was interrupted by Rachel turning rigid. Her eyes turned green and green smoke filled the room, some of it spewing out of her mouth.
“To the north to stop the tricks
Move swift or death transfix.
Child of Athena, Jupiter, and Aphrodite
Shall help stop the rise almighty”
Rachel collapsed and Chiron caught her. She shook her head “Was it good?”
Annabeth repeated it back. She really had memorized it word for word? I was impressed. Rachel looked horrified. “I gave a prophesy like that last night, except different.”
“What do you mean?” I said in bewilderment.
“Sometimes I give prophesies when I sleep.”
“How would you know? You’re asleep.” Leo snorted.
“It’s a feeling that I get. Anyways I remember the one that I gave last night.” We all looked at her with anticipation.
“Son of the sea use caution of the giant
To the north to stop the rise defiant
Owl, eagle, trident, and shadows peace or death will cherish
Tricks of the mind then child of the owl shall perish.”
Both prophesies included giants, a rise, death, tricks, and the north.
“Why wasn’t the prophesy given to us?” Piper asked.
“It was probably given to the other camp.” Annabeth concluded. “The son of the sea might be referring to Percy.” This statement seemed to fill her with hope and longing.
Clarisse ever so positive said “Or there could be another son of the sea.”
Chiron cleared his throat “We have a quest. Children of Athena, Jupiter, and Aphrodite. Annabeth?” He looked to her and she nodded vigorously “Jason?” I nodded. Chiron hesitated for a moment, perhaps considering Drew “Piper?” She also agreed.
“Wait a second! I want to go!” Leo protested.
“I want to go too!” someone yelled. I looked in the direction of the voice, but there wasn’t anyone there. Annabeth launched forward in midair, swiping at something. Chance materialized looking embarrassed and covering his mouth with his hand. Chance gave Annabeth her Yankees cap back. He apologized for taking her hat.
“No way. You are too young Chance!” Annabeth reasoned.
“What about me? I am one of the seven! I should go.” Leo.
Annabeth “Leo, you need to stay here to supervise the boat.” Leo sighed in defeat.
Before anyone else protested Chiron said “Annabeth, Jason, and Piper will leave in the morning.”
I wasn’t nervous for this quest. I had Annabeth, the most experienced camper, best fighter, and wisest decision maker. She would lead the quest. And I had Piper, someone who I trusted above anyone else.
Percy-
Once again the faces of Gaia, Khione, Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasus floated over me. Then I dreamed about Annabeth.
We were in her cabin and she was holding her arms out for me to hug her. We were by a volcano and she leaned in to kiss me. She was crying with a shroud in her hand, about to burn it. Several of her yelling at me. She ran up the hill only to hear of Beckendorf and my failure. Annabeth yelling at me in a tetherball court. I was in Styx, and she ‘appeared above me’ and pulled me out. Looking at her: injured and pale lying on a sofa. She was fighting Kronos with me. She helped me save the world, save Luke. Kissing her underwater.
Hera’s voice echoed in my mind “Try to resist the memories, my young hero.”
I guess I had enough happy memories for one night. I was aware that my enemies were trying to force back my memories, I wasn’t sure why. I knew I should try to forget my memories. But hey, you can’t push aside a part of your life. I wanted to know my life. I didn’t want to push back those memories. They are a part of me. Seeing them was like living it again, and for the first time. Every scene woke something up inside me. It made me feel alive.
In the morning I got out of bed and packed the little belongings that I had. I went to say goodbye to Craig. I could tell he was really enjoying the Apollo cabin. He was really into medicine, making sure I didn’t forget anything for the quest.
“Do you have nectar and ambrosia?” Craig asked.
“No.” I didn’t think I would need them, but it made him happier.
“You might want a whole ton of that.” He gave me two big canteens full of them.
He gave me the load on safety tips. He taught me the Heimlich remover, rescue breathing, and all sorts of treatments. I thought it was pointless especially because we had nectar and ambrosia, so that could heal anything. But he was enjoying it so much that I just went with it.
Gwen came and saved me. “Percy, we’re leaving.”
I turned to Craig “Thanks man for the help. See you.” We shook hands and patted each other’s shoulders. You know, cool guy stuff. Gwen lead me outside to a crowd of people in the middle was Reyna and Hazel waiting by their Pegasus’.
I waved goodbye to my friends Ken, Dakota, Craig. . . yup that’s it. I waved to Matt for fun and he glared at me. I chuckled.
I walked up to the Pegasi they all bowed to me and spoke in my mind. “Master. Lord.” And stuff like that. “Don’t call me that” I told them out loud. Hazel looked at me with concern.
“Son of Neptune. I can talk to them, they treat me like their master.” I shrugged.
We all mounted our Pegasi. Mine was named Bolt- who’s smell put me in a coma. He was black with white specks and loved to talk. Reminded me of something or someone. . . hmm.
The Pegasus’ unfolded their wings and we rose into the air. Mine started talking about enchiladas. ‘Grover’ popped into my mind, though I didn’t remember anything about him.
Hazel explained her plan. “We will ride the Pegasi to Prince George-“
“Where on earth is that?” I asked.
“In British Columbia, Canada.” She said like it was a no brainer. Hazel continued “Then we will take a bus to the Saint Elias Mountains-“
“Where are those?” I interrupted.
“Northwest part of British Columbia, Canada.” She said getting annoyed. “We will hike through those then go to Nunavut.” I am not the best at geography, but I decided not to ask where that was. It was probably in Canada somewhere.
“Where do we go to stop the giant or the rise or whatever?” Reyna asked
“I had a dream,” her face darkened “And I know it is going to be somewhere in Nunavut.”
It was final. We were going on a quest. We could die, the prophecy confirmed that. We were facing a strong enemy, but I wasn’t scared. It all felt familiar. I didn’t think this was my first quest. At the thought of another quest I felt sad. I had the feeling Annabeth was almost always with me on quests.
We rode the rest of the day in silence. I was the only one who was entertained. Bolt had some hilarious stories about an enchilada food fight by Hoover Dam. It seemed so familiar. I don’t know how, maybe my mom told me a story like it when I was a child. When it was dark I managed to sleep, though Bolt kept on yakking.
Leo-
Okay, let’s get this straight: I have the worst luck in the world.
I was always the third wheel of the group. I still remember when Piper didn’t invite me to the meteor shower. Well, in my fake memories, but still.
I always felt like an intruder whenever I was around Jason and Piper. I was mad that they didn’t stand up for me to go with them on the quest. I was stuck here to work on my stupid ship. Sorry I don’t mean to be negative, but don’t expect me to be all hiho dwarfish about it.
Truth is progress was going faster than I originally thought it would. But I was exhausted. These guys worked like crazed maniacs when it came to finding Percy. I hated this Percy guy, for making me lose sleep, gain calluses, and have no fun.
Chance came up to me looking gloomy. Honestly I could feel for the poor kid.
“Sorry chimp ‘bout not being able to go on the quest.” He looked at me weird when I called him a chimp- honestly it just slipped out.
“Leo, you’re weird.” Chance stated.
“Yah, I’ve heard it a million times, chimp.” He must be in really low spirits, because he only muttered three words. Record!
“Everyone thinks I’m little and can’t do anything. They don’t notice how hard I’m trying. They don’t think I am good enough to go on a quest.”
“Man, I feel ya.” Maybe I did so badly on the last quest they didn’t want me along.
“I wish they would change their minds and let me go.”
“Are you kidding me? The only way you could go is if you snuck behind them the whole quest. But you would need Annabeth’s invisibility cap, she can see anything.” I said jokingly, Chance didn’t laugh, but looked thoughtful. “I remember when I was spying on her and Rachel once,” I laughed, “I didn’t make a sound and was completely hidden. I thought I got them for sure. Next thing I know I had a blade at my throat and was staring at Annabeth.” I laughed, but Chance didn’t. “Earth to Chance!! Did you even hear a word I said?”
“Huh?” he said coming out of his thoughts.
“Nope, you didn’t even listen to a word I said. I was just blabbering like an idiot to myself.”
“I heard what you said.”
“You did?” I was a little confused, but then again I am always confused. Nothing new.
“Yah, about sneaking behind them the whole quest. You and me could do it together. We could stay a safe distance from them, not too close, but not too far. We would fight our own monsters, and near the end we would meet up with Annabeth. We would be so far from camp she can’t send us back.” He was beaming.
I stared at him blankly then had a heart attack “Are you insane? I was joking. I was totally kidding. Wait, you’re kidding too right? Right? Right?” I said getting prouder of him by the second. “Dude! You are a natural! I believed you for a second! Next future Leo here.” I was cracking up. “You were kidding, right?”
Chance smiled slowly “Yah. Yah.” He said as if trying to convince himself, “I was kidding.”
“I’ll see you chimp. Keep practicing.”
I walked away, smiling to myself. He was good, he even had me fooled. Well, back to Argo II.
Chance-
I saw Nico, who was back from searching for Percy. He looked as if he was leading a horse by the reins, but I saw no horse.
I walked up to Nico and asked if he found anything. He hadn’t.
“Where’s Annabeth?” Nico asked.
My face fell “On a Quest. Why?”
Nico looked disappointed, “I found something.” he looked over his shoulder. I followed his gaze to the empty air.
“Um, Nico? What are you looking at?”
“Oh, sorry Chance. This is Shadow.”
“Haha. Very funny.”
“No, there really is something there. It’s a special Pegasus. You have to imagine it then believe it is there. Concentrate, and you will see it.”
I looked at the air and concentrated like he told me to. I imagined every structure, its hooves to its head. Then I told myself it was there. Slowly, shadows started to form together till it revealed a real live Pegasus. I couldn’t tell what color it was, maybe a stormy gray, maybe a shadow black. I didn’t know, but it was beautiful.
“The owner can always see it, but an outsider has to work to see it.” Nico explained. I started formulating ideas in my head. “So Annabeth really isn’t here?” Nico asked.
“No, but Chiron is.”
“Thanks. Do you want to take shadow to the stables for me?”
“You bet!” I said, trying not to sound too excited. Everything was coming together so nicely, almost like it was destiny.
“Thanks Chance. See you around.”
“Bye Nico.”
want to know all fav. parts and characters! opinions? ideas? tell everyone to read this!! i need feedback!!
Annabeth-
I was going to find Percy on the quest, I knew it in my heart. And once I found him, I would bring him back home. Everyone at camp missed him, even the Ares cabin, which is saying a lot. They had lost their leader, the one who had saved the world and their lives. He was the glue that held the campers together and kept their spirits high. Now that he was gone, everyone was miserable. I had to bring him back home.
Before we left I said goodbye to all my friends and to my siblings. It was hardest to leave Chance- who was the closest sibling I had ever had. I was so proud of him. He worked so hard every day. I had to remind myself that he wasn’t going on a quest, so he would be fine.
Jason, Piper, and I had decided to take a car to the border of the US. Then from there wing it, take it as it comes. I drove, with Piper in the passenger’s seat and Jason in the back. We were listening to Jack Johnson.
After a few minutes of driving I felt uneasy. I stiffened.
“What’s wrong, Annabeth?” Piper asked.
“We’re being followed.”
Gwen-
I found myself staring at Percy. It was the second night of travel, and Percy was asleep on Bolt’s back. He looked amazing, even when he slept. Even when those enchanting green eyes were closed. I felt my cheeks heat up then looked away not wanting to look like a creep stalker.
You see, the thing about me is that I am really self conscious. I am super shy and blush at the slightest things. It’s really embarrassing when you blush when you talk to a guy teacher, even if he is a creep. Or you hear your name. Or when you look at a really cute boy. . .
Anyways, we had crossed the US border last night. That is what I love about Pegasi. They travel pretty fast and keep you off the ground, where most monsters are. Plus, Bolt’s smell was enough to mask the smell of an army of demigods. An army of demigods . . .
Flashbacks played in my mind: My best friend sprawled out of the ground, her eyes wide and blood coming out of her mouth. Swords clashing hordes of snake monsters, or snake monsters giving demigods fatal blows. Krios’ disturbing laugh. Friends and family lying on the ground, muttering their last words.
And that’s how I fell asleep, reliving my traumatic past.
Reyna-
I woke up to find that the Pegasi were no longer flying. We were on the ground with a sign ahead that read Prince George. We were already at the point to leave the Pegasi. I grumbled to myself. I didn’t see why Hazel thought it necessary to take a bus from here. The Pegasi could go a little further. Besides, we hadn’t been attacked once by monsters, which I found a little disconcerting, but I wasn’t complaining. I was also harboring many other grudges.
When everyone woke up Hazel announced we would be taking the bus. I couldn’t take it. I started snapping out at her. “That is a stupid plan!” Hazel looked offended “The Pegasi are working fine. We haven’t been attacked once, and we’re making great time.”
“Maybe I wanted to give the Pegasus’ a break, they’ve gone a long way.”
“Oh that’s very sweet.” I said mockingly.
“Are you questioning my knowledge?”
“Yah, I am. I think they can go further. Percy, ask them.” I gave him the most threatening glare I could afford. My message was: Agree with me or else.
Percy seemed to be talking to the Pegusus’. He looked up “They said they were fine to go further.”
I looked at Hazel, just to rub it in.
That made Hazel angry. She started to yell but was caught off guard when Gwen said softly “The prophecy warned us about this.”
“What?” we all asked.
“Owl, eagle, trident, and shadows peace or death will cherish.” She whispered.
We were caught dead in our own trap. Hazel gave in “Okay, we take the Pegusi to Saint Elias Mountains. But no further.” We all agreed then started again.
Piper-
We looked back and saw nothing. Annabeth had sharp senses, and she wasn’t ever wrong. It was unsettling. We shrugged it off and I finally stopped worrying. We went through Manhattan; though don’t ask me why Annabeth took us that way. It was a pain to go through all the traffic lights and suicidal taxi drivers.
As we got further through the city I noticed how depressed Annabeth started to become. She seemed to be in pain, like she was remembering unpleasant things. The Empire State Building came in view and Annabeth reminded us that it was below Olympus. It seemed ludicrous that the gods were up there, my mom was up there.
We passed by it. I looked at Annabeth to tell her how incredible it was but stopped when I saw her misty eyes. She had some tragic memories, no doubt.
I felt guilty. She took us here to show us Olympus, the center of our messed up lives. Even though coming here caused her a lot of pain.
Soon after we left the city I felt exhausted. When I fell asleep I had a strange dream visit.
Aphrodite was in Central Park somewhere. I rolled my eyes “You’re disobeying Zeus again? You’re helping me out?”
She smiled beautifully. “This quest is important also, but I am not as interested in that. This one has a good love story.”
“What do you mean?” blushing when I thought it might have to do with Jason.
“About the cutest couple have had a tragic event. They are separated. I step in and save a quest that unites this couple together. They save the world together and live happily ever after!” She giggled with a girlish twinkle in her eye. "It's so cute!"
“Huh?” I totally did not speak my mother's language.
“Percy and Annabeth! They need to be reunited. Their relationship- and skills as a team- are important to the destiny of the world.” I was confused and stunned that my mom broke the rules to talk to me about a couple.
“How could a relationship be that important?” I said doubtful.
“Remember Helen of Troy and the Trojan War? It started because of a relationship.” She had cornered me and proven me wrong.
“You need to do your best to bring them back together. Annabeth needs Percy. Percy needs Annabeth. It is just so cute!!” she was practically squealing in delight. She wiped a tear from her eye. She had been crying because something was cute . .. yup, that's my mom!
I thought about Annabeth in the car, practically in tears. Then I thought of the picture up in Chiron’s Hall of Fame. Annabeth and Percy arm in arm smiling widely. Annabeth looked so alive and . . .happy. Aphrodite was right, Annabeth needed Percy. He must be some guy to deserve Annabeth.
“Do me a personal favor and get them back together. You need to realize how cute they are together! You’ll love their story. It will make you cry.” The goddess was again teary she was so excited. “I will help you a bit.”
Okay. Craziest goddess ever and she happens to be my mom.
“Great. Thanks mom.” I said without enthusiasm. I didn’t want to turn into a love crazed zombie like my mom.
My dream shifted.
I saw Annabeth and Percy sitting next to each other singing at the bonfire. Their fingers were locked. Annabeth was leaning into Percy, her head on his shoulder. They looked so content and were both smiling softly as if drinking in every moment they had with each other.
The song died of and another started. Quietly Percy stood up and led Annabeth out into the shadows. I prayed that my dream wouldn’t follow them, but it did. Sorry Annabeth for spying.
They kept holding hands. When they were in front of the Athena cabin, Percy looked into her eyes. He seemed to be staring intently into hers- as if memorizing every detail of those piercing eyes. Piper envied Annabeth, for being so lucky. Percy looked so . . . in lov- SNAP OUT OF IT PIPER! What was my mom turning me into?
I noticed that there was a layer of snow on the ground- which wouldn’t normally be weird, but at Camp Half blood it was. Chiron probably wanted a little snow a few weeks before Christmas.
“You know, I’ve never gotten the chance to kick your butt in a snowball fight.” Percy said casually.
“That’s because you’re too scared to be beaten by a girl. If you lose I get to call you a sissy.” Annabeth taunted.
Percy smiled cockily “Me? Beaten by a girl? Never.”
They both smiled. The next moment there was snow being hurtled through the air. Annabeth was throwing them like a mad machine, making and throwing faster than you could say ‘hello.’ Percy was equally good, though he wasn’t as accurate in hitting his target. He must be terrible at archery.
They both were dodging and swerving through armies of snowballs, while scooping up and hurtling more. Percy took a huge snowball- one big enough for a snowman- and threw it. When it was in midair he focused on it. The bolder of snow melted into water, soaking Annabeth to the core.
Percy was laughing hard. Annabeth threw one last snowball which landing right in Percy’s once laughing mouth. He touched it and it dissolved to water, revealing a proud smile. They walked up to each other into a laughing hug. The moment Percy touched Annabeth, she was dry.
“Sissy.” Annabeth whispered. She leaned her head up and met Percy’s lips in a soft kiss.
They parted slowly. “Good night.” Percy said.
“See you bright and early tomorrow.” Annabeth said as if that was too long to wait.
Percy looked unsure and unconvinced, as if he could feel something was wrong. Then I realized when this night was. This was a night Annabeth would remember for a long time. I looked at the dream Annabeth in pity. In the morning, she would find an empty bunk in the Poseidon cabin. This was the night of Percy’s disappearance.
Piper-
I wanted to find out why my mom was so crazy about Percy and Annabeth’s relationship. But I didn’t want to find out because of dreams. I wanted to find out from Annabeth.
The opportunity came the next day. Jason was asleep in the back. I worked up my nerve and blurted out the question.
“Will you tell me about you and Percy? I mean, you’re story.”
Annabeth looked at me strange. “My mom visited me last night, and made me curious.” I explained.
She nodded “I will keep it as short as possible. The first time I saw him, he had dragged himself over the border of Half blood hill. He was unconscious. I told Chiron ‘he was the one’” Wow, double meaning there. “We started the little tradition of fighting with each other. He luckily still invited me on his quest. We ended up going on a love ride, saved the Gods from fighting each other over a stolen weapon. We went on another quest together, alone for a while. We saved Camp Half blood from an attack. Later, we went to a school to get two demigods. We danced half a dance, then we were cut short. We saved the demigods from a monster, but I ended up being taken.
“Everyone thought I was dead, but Percy never stopped believing. He disobeyed everyone and snuck on a quest. He saved me. We danced again on Olympus,” she laughed, “We both heard a slow dance, but others were rocking out. Anyways, we went on another quest together. The whole time we had known each other, Percy was jealous of Luke, who I thought I was in love with. Then Rachel came into play, and I realized I was jealous of her. She was competition for Percy. I was stubborn and rude to her. I pretty much hated her and that she was stealing Percy,” I was surprised Rachel had once liked Percy. Annabeth seemed like the only girl right for Percy. “Anyways Rachel helped us save Camp.
“The next year was the year we all had been dreading. Percy would be turning 16, the time of the Great Prophesy. I was scared out of my guts, I knew the prophecy well. I knew there was no way he would survive. The whole time I knew him, I knew he was the one in the prophecy. I realized that I loved him. I didn’t want him to break my heart, like Luke had, so I tried to distance myself from him. It didn’t work; I was crazy about the stupid guy.” She laughed, “I was scared out of my mind near the end of his 15th year. We fought the Titans in New York. He saved the world.” She looked sad “If he were here he would correct me and say ‘We save the world’. He was so humble that way. Ever since August 18, I’ve been the happiest and luckiest girl in the world. I had found the perfect guy, my diamond in the rough.” She was silent. We didn’t speak again for an hour. Annabeth was consumed in her memories.
My heart was pounding. I understood what my mom meant. They had the perfect love story. It had taken them four long years for them to give in and realize how in love they were. They were meant to be.
I made a vow. I would do all I could to get Annabeth back to Percy. They had had every obstacle possible in their relationship. They should have given up by now. It seemed every force possible was trying to pull them apart. But they belonged with each other, simple as that. They deserved some happiness finally in their relationship. All these thoughts thanks to my mom.
Percy-
If you ever need to get somewhere fast, take a Pegasus. We were already at the Saint Elias Mountains, and it had been less than two days. We were ready to go on foot.
By now Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasus had made me remember a lot of my past.
Snow was deep, but compacted. So, it was easy to walk in. Just as long as there was no snow storms we would be fine. We walked up the mountain, then down, then tackled another mountain.
By about afternoon, we were hit by a snow storm, just my luck. We found a cave at the base of a valley. The valley was small and on the other side there was a large, steep mountain.
I took a quick power nap to re-energize myself. In my nap I had a dream- go figure.
I was underwater. I swept my gaze around myself. standing ten feet away from me was Hera. She seemed to be trying to telling me something, but I couldn't hear what she was saying."What?" I yelled, but no sound escaped my lips. then i heard the words quiet and slurred. It sounded something like this: Go to Lake Souperior, ero. You are needed here. Death! Death waits!
after I woke up, the storm was only about 45 minutes long, which seemed like eternity for me. What did my dream mean? She told me to go to lake Soup- or whatever. Maybe she meant Lake Superior. Then she told me I was needed HERE. Was I needed here or at lake soup? Where is death waiting?
I was still uneasy, when we walked outside after the storm had passed. It was light and fluffy snow. Hazel seemed to be getting nervous too.
“What’s wrong Haze?” Gwen asked.
“Bad conditions for an avalanche.” I nodded.
“How?”
“The snow was compacted today, right? That’s the bottom layer. Now the top layer of snow is light. There is a steep slope over there.” She pointed to the mountain across the valley. “If there is any disturbance, an avalanche will bury us alive.”
“Stop worrying.” Reyna said exasperated. “You’re too paranoid.”
Gwen was going to say something but decided otherwise.
Once the storm ended we headed out of the cave. “Where do we go now?” Gwen asked.
Everyone looked at me. I was the leader of the quest, and I had no idea where to go- Lake Soup? No, we needed to finish this quest. “Our destination is that way” I pointed at the steep mountain, “But we may want to go around it.” I looked at Hazel for advice.
“We need to go part way up, and then we can make our way around the mountain. On the other side, we will have a good view of the next valley.”
I nodded “Sounds like we have a plan.”
We started up the mountain. What happened next was like what happened in the movie Mulan. A huge army of monsters rose over the mountain, coming at us at top speed. In a minute four demigods would be engulfed in a huge wave of monsters. The odds would be about sixty to one. Not good chances at all. We wouldn’t survive this one.
“Conquer-” Reyna said
“Or die!!” Reyna, Gwen, and Hazel said with determined voices, like they had memorized that motto as kids. I gulped, it would be the latter.
Despite their ever so comforting words, they all looked scared. They knew they were going to die. I looked at their faces, and was determined. These were my friends, I couldn’t let them get hurt.
At the pit of my stomach I felt a pull. At the top of the mountain, a small earthquake happened. Just enough to start a disturbance. Just enough to cause an avalanche.
I looked up and saw the chain reaction start, gaining momentum with each particle of snow it devoured. The monsters screamed in fear as the avalanche swallowed them up. Rows after rows of monsters dissolved or disappeared in the snow. Then I realized my mistake.
We were in range of the avalanche. We would be buried soon also.
“Percy save yourself!” Gwen yelled as she took action. She concentrated then zoomed up into the air, holding Reyna then Hazel. She was suspended in the air, not flying, just floating there.
I didn’t look at them long; I still had to save myself. The avalanche was coming at me with blinding speed. It would hit me in a few seconds.
Hazel screamed. I waited another second then melted the snow around my feet. The wave shot me into the air as the avalanche swallowed the area I was a second earlier.
I let myself on the now cement snow. We made it!
I turned to thank Gwen.
I looked back to Gwen and Reyna, tears gathering in their eyes, a frantic expression in their faces. They were searching and digging furiously. Then I noticed why.
Hazel wasn’t there.
She was buried in the avalanche.
Hazel-
Everything had been going great until my grip on Gwen loosened. We both were straining to keep a tight grip, but my fingers slipped out of hers.
I scram as I fell into the fast moving avalanche. The moment I hit it, I sank in. I remember what they told us to do in school- make a air hole with your hands over your nose and mouth. I did that but snow still shoved its way into my mouth and nose. I managed to get the snow out of my mouth and used my tongue to clear my nose. Even after that I had little air, and oxygen would run out soon.
Instantly the snow hardened around me. It was as hard as cement. Imagine being buried in cement- and you get the feeling of dying in an avalanche.
I tried frantically to move- anything. Move a toe at least, but it wouldn’t budge. I could feel the oxygen running out. In my moment of frantic I realized this was the end, I had had a good life.
Then there was the moment when I sucked the last particle of oxygen. I held the oxygen in my lungs, trying to stay alive as long as I could, trying to hold onto life longer. This was it, there would be no more after this. 'Good bye life' I whispered with my last breath.
Then, slowly, light dimmed around me, and the world went black.
okay one item of sad business: this is summer, and my summer is busy. I have homework for school that i haven't even started *thank you H English* so this story isn't priority as of right now. SO, it is going to be super hard to write as often. BUT if i do get lots of input, etc, i will make the extra effort FOR YOU!
Percy-
Hazel was buried in the avalanche, the avalanche I had caused. Guilt welled up inside of me. It was my fault. All my fault. A stupid and rash decision had cost my friend’s life.
Reyna-
I was so stupid. I had been so unfair an rude to her, and I didn’t have a chance to make it up to her. Her last memories of me were of me angry at her.
Gwen-
We couldn’t say a word. It was too devastating. So unfair. My best friend was gone. First my half brother Jason, now Hazel . . . How could I have let her slip?
Tears were still blurring up my vision. I looked at Reyna, who looked miserable. Then I looked at Percy. He seemed to be taking it the worst. His head was down, looking devastated, and guilty, but no tears came. He looked up in determination.
The snow around me started to melt into salt water. The snow level started to fall, becoming a stream that ran down the mountain. I looked around for any sign of a living figure, or a dead one. . . I pushed that thought away.
I saw a shoe and my heart leapt. I ran towards it and the cement snow continued to melt by Hazel. It sunk until I saw her leg, waist, then slowly her head. I held her in my arms. I looked at her face. Lifeless with a purple frostbitten nose.
“Quick! Nectar and ambrosia!” then I realized that all our supplies had been buried in the avalanche. We had no more supplies, and no nectar and ambrosia.
“Does anyone know CPR?”
Percy said slowly “I do. Craig taught me, but I never practiced on someone.”
“Well now would be that time.”
“I might kill her.”
“She’s already dead.” My voice caught.
Percy walked over Hazel’s body and started the CPR movements. He pushed down in the center of her chest hard and fast about 2 inches deep. He probably was breaking her ribs, but hey, he might be saving her life. He did 30 pumps. Then he tilted her head, lifted her chin, and checked signs of breathing. Then he gave her two breaths. He continued this a few times until he announced “She’s breathing.”
We all let out a sigh of relief. Hazel gained consciousness, though she was weak. She pulled out a square of ambrosia from her pocket. We looked at it in disbelief, all that and she had the medicine?
“Who broke my ribs?” she scolded teasingly.
She took it and it healed her broken ribs. We were going to rest but Hazel refused. “We have to make good time, and I’m fine.” Reluctantly we gave in. Hazel was bound to kill herself arguing if we didn’t give in.
It was good to have our wonderful Hazel back.
Nico-
I ran back to the Big House. I had already talked to Chiron about using Shadow to scout the possible places the Roman Camp could be. But now an emergency had arisen.
I burst into Chiron’s office, who looked up in alarm. “Nico? What’s wrong?”
I was panting for breath “Chance is gone.”
A shadow passed on Chiron’s face. “What do you mean?”
“I can’t find him anywhere. The last I saw him, he was taking Shadow to the stables. I looked there and Chance wasn’t there.” I paused “Shadow wasn’t there either.”
Chiron paled “He’s gone after them.”
“After who?”
He just looked up at me, too speechless to tell me.
mkay- remember: be commenting like crazy! thanks!
Pulling off a crime was easier than I thought. I thought I would have to be super quick like Annabeth, really persuasive like Piper, or an awesome fighter like Percy. But all I had to do is walk away from Nico a little ways, mount Shadow, and ride off invisible to everyone. I thought I had blown my chance when I told Leo my plan, but luckily it was Leo, and not someone else. Leo was too . . . Leo (best word I could think of, besides slow and thick headed) to figure things out.
To tell you the truth, I was trying to be like my hero, Percy. I heard all about his third quest, and I was determined to pull it off like he did. He inspired me with the idea, actually.
I followed Annabeth’s car easily, even in New York. I just had to ride above all the traffic.
I was ready for this quest. I wanted revenge on Gaia, who had taken my dad’s life. You see, before I came to Camp Half-blood, my father died in an earthquake.
I was home alone. A mud woman walked into my house. She turned on the news. It was showing all the damage of the earthquake, and reported the deaths. All the earth woman did was stand there and laugh dreamily. Saying to not mess with her. I was too shocked to do anything, but she left saying me and my friends would be next.
That’s why I wanted to go so badly. I wanted to make sure they were okay. If they ever needed help, I would be their surprise back up.
I still kept good distance, just in case. Annabeth avoided the major roads as much as possible. Probably wanted to avoid all the clueless mortals.
I knew Annabeth was planning on going to Nunavut, I guess I could sort of read peoples thoughts. I also knew that she wanted to see the great lakes, especially Lake Superior. That would be our next stop.
Leo-
When Chiron and Nico told camp that Chance was missing a sudden dread filled my blood. He wouldn’t have. He couldn’t have. Why was I so dense? Chance was being serious when he told me about his plan. He wasn’t a future Leo after all. I felt sort of responsible. I was the second to last person to see him. AND I had been too stupid to not realize what he was doing. Imagine that, me, stupid?
I was ashamed of myself and of Chance. He had stolen and lied. I didn’t think he was capable of that.
I raised my hand “Chance is planning on following Annabeth.” Chiron nodded solemnly.
Nico raised an eyebrow. “How would you know that?”
“I have my, um. . . reasons.” I said embarrassed and under pressure. Stupid answer. I was making a fool of myself. I might as well be a spinach head that says ‘durr’ all the time.
“We need someone to bring him back, and as soon as possible.” Chiron said “He is too young and inexperienced.”
My hand shot in the air.
“Why should you go Valdez?” Drew shot “I am the one who can convince him to come back.”
I found myself nodding. I shook my head, trying to overcome my trance. “No it’s my fault, I should get him.”
“How is it your fault, Leo? It’s mine if it is anyone’s.” Nico argued.
“I was the . . . second to last person to see him.” That wasn’t even one part of the reason. I mainly wanted to go on the quest.
“Well I was the last, and I gave him the Pegasus.”
I couldn’t let him win “I have to go.” I put as much force as I could muster.
“If you both feel that strongly, you can go. Nico and Leo.” Chiron said. Whot! Whot! I just pulled off a Beauty Queen. Man that must come in handy.
“But once you find Chance, you have to bring him back. No staying.” Chiron ordered. I felt a little disappointed. I was hoping he wouldn’t have to say it exactly, he would just mean it. But now that he said it I had to obey.
Nico and I had to travel fast to catch up with them. I asked him what could transport us fast. He answered me with a dark smile. I gulped, guess he had an idea.
Annabeth-
I couldn’t shake off the feeling that someone was following us. I looked back again and again, but I saw nothing there. Things started to get a little rocky for us. We all were ornery and tired.
Piper started up a conversation. It was mostly boring stuff until she mentioned Percy. “My mom is insane about you and Percy. I guess you could call her a huge fan.” I laughed, but not my real laugh. I hadn’t used my real laugh since Percy left “I bet your parents are happy you found someone like him.” Dangerous ground.
Hesitantly, “Yah, my dad loves him, thinks he’s the coolest guy ever.”
“What ‘bout your mom?” Piper asked.
“Uh. . . you want me to tell you the truth? She hates him. She doesn’t want me to even associate with him. She thinks I am unwise to be friends with him.”
“What do his parents think?” Jason asked despite Pipers warning glare.
“Sally loves it. But Poseidon isn’t exactly enthusiastic about it.”
“Why not?” Jason asked.
I looked at him like he was stupid, then I remembered the story was Greek, not Roman. “Poseidon and Athena hate each other. They have had this feud ever since the Athens contest thing.”
Jason snorted “Looks like you have a little Romeo and Juliet story goin on.” I pictured me sitting at Percy’s grave. Or worse, a life or future without Percy in it.
I slammed on the brakes “Get out of the car.” I demanded.
“Common Annabeth. I was joking.” He was right to tell you the truth, but he had scared me. I didn’t want that kind of ending. I want a happily ever after, or whatever those lovey dovey people say.
So many things could go wrong. I mean, we’re both half bloods for goodness sakes. They aren’t supposed to live long. Anything could happen. Percy could die, I could die.
I was determined, my love story was not going to end like Romeo and Juliet’s story. It wasn’t going to be a tragic ending. I wasn’t going to let it. I was going to make sure nothing happened to Percy. We would get our happy ever after.
I sounded so lame, so pathetic, so weak. How could a guy do this to me?! I was losing my mind! I was turning all Aphrodite gushy. Focus.
I apologized to Jason, and embarrassed, we went on our way to Lake Superior. We would be there by morning.
Chance-
Annabeth stopped at about 1 in the morning, slept, then got back on the road at 7. We arrived at Lake Superior an hour later. They got out of the car and beached, Annabeth drinking in the scene.
I brought Shadow down to the ground, and then went off a little way away from Jason and those guys, just far enough for them not to notice me.
After about 20 minutes I got restless. I took Shadow by the mane and walked a little ways.
There was a huge ‘Pop!’ behind me. Two people appeared out of nowhere. One said “Next time I am not taking the Shadow Travel Express.”“Uh oh.” I said. I had been caught, but not by Annabeth. By someone I thought I had fooled.
“Uh oh’s right Chance.” He said.
Nico was with Leo. Nico took Shadows reins gently from me. “Let’s go home.” I started backing towards the water shaking my head. I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to leave Annabeth, Jason, and Piper. What if Gaia killed them?
I wanted to find Percy! Percy . . . I had failed my new goal in life: to become like my greatest hero, Percy. I was bitterly disappointed. I couldn’t go back and face my failure. I hadn’t succeeded like Percy had.
I backed all the way until I had a foot in the chilling water. I felt something slimy wrap its way around my leg. I looked down to see a purple green tentacle sucking my leg further into the water, that deep ominous. Goose bumps rose up my arms and my skin crawled. I saw bubbles erupting from that deep orb, and I didn’t want to know what was down there.
Leo-
When I saw the tentacle I was like Uh Oh, octopus has got his leg. But I forgot 2 things. One: Octopus’ don’t live in Lake Superior- or lake soup as I call it because it looked like a mystery stew brewing in a cauldron. Two: I am most recently a half-blood, which means weirder stuff could happen.
Chance’s face reflected pure horror. Suddenly the tentacle tugged and Chance disappeared into that mysterious bubbling cauldron of a lake. My stomach dropped “Chance!” Nico and I yelled in unison.
I pulled out the only tool I could think of from my tool belt: a screw driver. Screw you! I was going to defeat a mysterious monster that I couldn’t even see with a screw driver.
Synchronized, Nico and I shot into the deep watered orb to save Chance.
