Annabeth picked up the book and craned her neck to see where Travis went. “Hey guys. Where did Travis go?”
Percy groaned. “Off to do some crazy prank on us.”
“Yeah,” Jason agreed, looking at Conner. “And using Conner to distract us.”
“Hey! I have no idea where Travis went.”
Reyna scoffed. “Yeah right.”
“I swear!”
Piper leaned forward. “Look at me. Where. Did. Travis. Go?” she said, using her charmspeak.
Conner stared into her eyes and said, “I don't know.”
“Hey!” Will shouted. “That rhymes!”
Annabeth glared at him. “If you haven't noticed, we have a problem at hand right now.”
Rachel and Annabeth both turned to look at Conner. “Where is your brother?”
Conner held up his hands. “I don't know! I swear on the River Styx!”
Thunder boomed in the distance.
This was definitely not the answer everyone was expecting.
Percy stammered, “Wh-what?”
Just then Travis came running in holding a small index card and a pen, shouting, “I got it! I got it!”
Jake raised an eyebrow. “What?”
Leo grinned. “Maybe Travis won ten million dollars! Let me see!”
Travis backed away. “No! No! Just keep reading!”
Leo snatched the card from his hand.
“Noooooo!!!!” Travis screamed.
Leo looked at the card, and back at Travis. It was obvious that he was confused. Really confused. “There's nothing!”
Travis winked. “Exactly.”
“Except for a phone number.”
The son of Hermes stiffened.
Katie reached out. “Hey. Let me see.”
“No! No!” Travis shrieked. He stepped in between Leo and Katie.
Conner, sensing that this card meant a lot to his brother, quickly snatched the card from Leo and stuffed it into his pocket.
Katie, Travis, and Leo continued to argue. Percy glanced at Annabeth. Hazel glanced at Frank. Chris raised an eyebrow at Clarisse, who was watching this quite intently.
Finally Piper stood and shouted. “WILL YOU PEOPLE JUST SHUT UP SO WE CAN KEEP READING?!?!?!?!?”
Silence.
“Good.” Piper sat down.
Leo looked at his empty hands. “Where did the card go?”
Travis had a panicked look in his eyes, but Conner winked at his brother. Travis relaxed a bit.
Once everything was quiet and everybody was relaxed, Annabeth began to read.
Except for the fact that each had a large brass number above the door-
Annabeth choked.
(odds on the left side, evens on the right), they looked absolutely nothing alike.
“Wow,” Thalia said. “Kelp Head actually noticed something.”
Annabeth giggled. “It's a miracle!”
Percy gave them his best death glare.
They immediately stopped.
Jason nodded. “Hey, man. Can you teach me how to do that?”
“Sure. Just not in front of, you know.” Percy glanced at the girls.
“Okay.”
All the girls glared at them. Lets just say that if glares could kill, Percy and Jason would be in Hades right now.
Jake picked up the book and continued to read.
Number nine had smokestacks, like a tiny factory.
Leo fist pumped. “Boo-yah!”
Cue face palm.
Number four had tomato vines on the walls and a roof made out of real grass.
Katie smiled and nodded.
Travis sighed. He loved that smile. (hint hint :D)
Seven seemed to be made of solid gold-
Will whooped. Frank cheered for Apollo.
Once again, cue face palm.
which gleamed so much in the sunlight it was almost impossible to look at. They all faced a commons area about the size of a soccer field, dotted with Greek statues, fountains, flower beds, and a couple of basketball hoops (which were more my speed).
Percy and Will high fived.
Everyone except for Jason, Leo, Piper, Hazel, Frank, and Reyna groaned.
The others looked around in confusion.
“Why?” Hazel asked.
Nico looked at his sister. “Well, let's just say that Percy has always been really good at basketball.”
“And now that the Apollo cabin is coaching him,” Thalia continued.
Annabeth nodded, catching up. “He kicks butt, like really, in basketball. Only the Apollo kids are willing to challenge him.”
“Oh,” Reyna said. That would explain why he's so muscular, she thought dreamily.
Jason and Leo said in unison, “I am never going to play against Percy.”
Their faces turned red while everyone laughed.
“Percy is a good student,” Will said.
Percy laughed. “Yeah. And Will is a good teacher.”
They high fived.
Everybody else groaned.
Annabeth rolled her eyes. “Jake. Just continue.”
“Aye.”
In the center of the field was a huge stone-lined firepit.
Frank flinched at the thought of fire.
Even though it was a warm afternoon, the hearth smoldered. A girl about nine years old was tending the flames, poking the coals with a stick.
“I don't use a stick!” Leo boasted. “I can use my bare hands.”
Everyone groaned and face palmed.
“Yes yes we know!” Piper shouted. “Now please just be quiet!”
Jake tossed the book to Nico. “You read.”
The pair of cabins at the head of the field, numbers one and two-
Thalia, Percy, and Annabeth muttered something about stupid cows.
Percy added something about being blasted out of the sky, which earned him a glare from Thalia
looked like his-and-hers mausoleums,
“Because they are,” Chris said.
“Thanks for that useless comment,” Percy grumbled.
“What are mausoleums?” Conner asked.
Everyone ignored him. Even Annabeth.
Clarisse balled her fists. “You'll pay for that!”
“How? You never got me back for that bathroom incident and its been, what? Five, six years?”
Around them, the Greek campers were trying really, really hard not to laugh.
Probably enjoying the different colors Clarisse's face was changing. Even Chris was having a hard time holding back a fight.
The daughter of Ares pointed a callused finger at Percy. “You-you have no idea what I'm going through right now.”
“Oh. Not the count the fact that you also haven't gotten me back for breaking your first electric spear on my first capture-the-flag.” Percy smirked.
Finally, Annabeth started laughing. Everyone who had been holding it laughed, which was everyone.
Clarisse looked like she was smoldering.
Frank seemed to enjoy the fact that his half-sister is very angry.
Leo didn't help matters. “Hey Clarisse. You seem like you really want to blow some fire. I can help you with that. I help you blow fire, you give me ten drachmas.”
Clarisse balled her fist and spun around. WRAM!!!
Hazel ran to get some ice from the cooler and placed in on Leo's black eye.
“I take that as a no,” Leo grumbled.
“No duh,” Clarisse sneered.
It took a while for Chris to calm her down, but in the end, she was snoring next to Chris.
Hazel picked up the book and began to read.
big white marble boxes with heavy columns in the front. Cabin one was the biggest and bulkiest of the twelve.
Jason blinked. “But aren't there like forty cabins?”
“This is before the deal,” Grover said.
“The deal?”
Nico smiled wickedly, which made everyone shiver. “You'll find out in the fifth book.
“The very end,” Percy added helpfully.
Its polished bronze doors shimmered like a hologram, so that from different angles, lightning bolts seem to streak across them.
“Awesome,” Leo said. “How did I not notice it before?”
“Yeah,” Nico said. “How did you?”
“Nico!” Katie scolded. “That's not nice!”
Nico blinked. “What? It's just like saying that you can't see Grover's horns. I mean, look at it!”
Grover touched his horns. “What's wrong with it?”
Nico grabbed Grover's horns and started shaking it. “It's so obvious!”
“N-n-ni-ni-c-c-cooooo!!!!!” Grover wailed.
Percy raised an eyebrow. “I think that's too much, Nico.”
They managed to calm him down and Hazel started reading.
Cabin two was more graceful somehow, with slimmer columns garlanded with pomegranates and flowers.. The walls were carved with images of peacocks. “Zeus and Hera?” I guessed.
Thalia clapped. “Finally! A dim light goes off in that head of yours.”
“Hey!” Percy protested.
Hazel did the safe thing and read.
“Correct,” Chiron said. “Their cabins look empty.” “Several of the cabins are. That's true. No one ever stays in one or two.” Okay. So each cabin had a different god, like a mascot. Twelve cabins for the twelve Olympians. But why would some be empty?
Thalia sniffed. “Forget about what I said about that light.”
Piper coughed.
“What?”
“Nothing,” Piper said smiling. “Just that you are all so nice to each other.”
“Of course,” Annabeth said. She kissed Percy on the cheek.
Reyna flared her nostrils. Rachel noticed and raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything.
I stopped in front of the first cabin on the left, cabin three.
Uh oh, Annabeth thought.
It wasn't high and mighty like cabin one, but long and low and solid. The outer walls were of rough gray stone studded with pieces of seashell and coral, as if the slabs had been hewn straight from the bottom of the ocean floor. I peeked inside the open doorway and Chiron said, “Oh, I wouldn't do that!”
“But you never listen,” Reyna guessed.
Percy grinned. “Exactly.”
Annabeth kissed him again. “That's what I like best about you.” They kissed again.
Will cleared his throat. “Should we, um, take a break or keep reading?”
Percy and Annabeth broke apart. “No. Um, keep reading,” Percy stammered.
Hazel began yet again.

Before he could pull me back, I caught the salty scent of the interior, like the wind on the shore at Montauk. The interior walls glowed like abalone.
“What’s abalone?” Leo wondered.
“Go find a dictionary,” Annabeth told him flatly.
Travis, Connor, Chris, and Leo all went to find a dictionary.
There were six empty bunk beds with silk sheets turned down. But there was no sign anyone had ever slept there. The place felt so sad and lonely, I was glad when Chiron put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Come along, Percy.”
“Now the cabin has fish ponies,” Tyson clapped happily.
“Yeah, Ty,” Percy said smiling, “they’re great.”
Most of the other cabins were crowded with campers. Number five was bright red-a real nasty paint job, as if the color had been splashed on with buckets and fists.
“That was fun,” Clarisse grinned.
“And you are my sister?” Frank asked in disbelief.
“How is a chubby, baby face my brother?” Clarisse shot back.
Frank glared at her.
The roof was lined with barbed wire. A stuffed wild boar’s head hung over the doorway, and its eyes seemed to follow me.
“How did I never notice that before?” Leo asked.
“Because you’re stupid,” Piper joked.
“Oh, really?” Leo said, cracking a smile.
“Yup,” Piper said, popping the p.
Leo just smirked before using his arm to put Piper in a headlock.
“Ah, Leo,” Piper groaned.
“Take it back, Beauty Queen,” Leo chuckled at Piper’s weak attempts to escape. “Take it back.”
“No,” Piper said grudgingly.
“Then you’ll stay like this,” Leo said evilly. “Muahahahahahahaha!”
“Jason, a little help here?” Piper groaned.
“Sorry, Piper, but this interesting,” Jason laughed with everyone else.
Piper opened her mouth and then bit down hard.
“OW!” Leo yelled which made everyone jump in surprise. “You bit me!”
“Yup,” Piper smiled proudly. She raised her arms in triumph now that she was out of Leo’s headlock.
“You better run,” Leo got up and began chasing Piper around the room.
“This is going to take a while so let’s just continue,” Jason said watching Leo chase Piper into the kitchen.
Inside I could see a bunch of mean-looking kids, both girls and boys, arm wrestling and arguing with each other while rock music blared. The loudest was a girl about thirteen or fourteen.
“Uh-oh, Percy’s description of Clarisse,” Nico looked panicked. “Watch out a fight’s gonna brake out.”
Clarisse was sending a hard glare at Percy and he just glared back.
She wore a size XXXL CAMP HALF-BLOOD T-shirt under a camouflage jacket. She zeroes in on me and gave me an evil sneer. She reminded me of Nancy Bobofit, though the camper girl was much bigger and tougher looking, and her hair was long and stringy, and brown instead of red.
Clarisse continued to glare at Percy but decided not to kill him because most of that was true.
I kept walking, trying to stay clear if Chiron’s hooves. “We haven’t seen any other centaurs,” I observed.
Thalia groaned. “Could you imagine the Party Ponies at camp?”
Everyone who met the wild centaurs shuddered.
“Horrible,” Rachel muttered.
“No,” Chiron said sadly. “My kinsmen are a wild and barbaric folk, I’m afraid. You might encounter them in the wilderness, or at major sporting events.
“That’s true,” Will said. “I constantly see Party Ponies at the Super Bowl.”
But you won’t see any here.”
“Good thing, too,” Frank said.
“What do you mean?” Annabeth said.
“We were taught that centaur were dangerous creatures who were constantly getting drunk and killing heroes,” Reyna sneered at her.
“Well I guess you will learn the truth about centaurs as we read on then,” Annabeth said, glaring.
“Are you saying that I’m lying?” Reyna accused.
“The words came out of your mouth not mine,” Annabeth pointed out rudely.
“Why you little b-”
“Okay,” Percy said interrupting the girls. “How about we just continue reading now and fight later.”
The girls didn’t say anything but just continued to glare at each other.
“Read Nico,” Percy ordered.
“You said your name was Chiron. Are you really . . .” He smiled down at me. “The Chiron from the stories? Trainer of Hercules and all that? Yes, Percy, I am.”
“How could you have not guessed that?” Piper asked as she and Leo ran through the room.
“I was confused,” Percy said innocently.
“Seaweed Brain, you’re always confused,” Annabeth teased.
Percy just pouted playfully in response.
“But shouldn’t you be dead?”
“Straight to the point, huh, Kelp Head?” Thalia laughed.
“At least I know my own age,” Percy muttered quietly.
Chiron paused, as if the question intrigued him. “I honestly don’t know about should be. The Truth is, I can’t be dead. You see, eons ago the gods granted my wish. I could continue the work I loved. I could be a teacher if heroes as long as humanity needed me. I gained much from that wish . . . and I gave up much. But I’m still here, so I can only assume I’m still needed.”
“He is.”
“Definitely.”
“We’d be lost without him.”
All of the Greeks smiled in agreement.
Suddenly everyone heard a crash from one of the bedrooms.
“LEO!”
