The Host Question

Do the Souls take over the minds of animals on Earth?

I know they take over the minds of humans... but do they take over the animals, too? Like dogs and cats and such?

I don't believe so, because Wanderer said the Souls take over the predominant life form on a planet. Also, Melanie fears coyotes will attack them in the desert, and a Seeker was actually attacked by a coyote. These aren't the actions of a peaceful soul.

They only take the bodies of the dominant species, but if another species is found to be sentient, they consider taking their bodies as well, like on the fire Planet, they are thinking of colonising the Walking Flowers in addition to the Fire Tasters.

Yeah, the book never mentioned the Souls taking over the animals on Earth. However, I don't see why they wouldn't. They've taken over lots of other species before--why not dogs or cats or fish or tigers?

Also, here's a thought: I wonder if the Souls could take over the plants on Earth? I don't think they do, but I wonder if it's even possible that they could. Didn't Wanda say she's been a Flower before on a different planet?

They pony take over the bodies of sentient beings (emotions, brains, etc.) so our plants would not be suitable for them. Plants on other worlds are capable of thought, as shown by the See Weeds who communicate through thought.

I don't think so. Do you remember when the Seekers assumed Wanderer/Melanie and The Seeker (Lacey) had been killed by animals in the desert? Surely if there had been souls in the animals they wouldn't have thought that.

Completely true. I don't think I've every even thought of that before. I mean, I didn't think the Souls took over the animals, but I still don't see why they wouldn't. I'd think they'd take over every living thing they could. But, as you pointed out, there's no way the Souls took over the animals.
