This article summarizes what happens in the first book of the triology, The Hunger Games. They are organized by chapter and can in no way capture the emotion and amazing writing talent of Suzanne Collins.

CHAPTER 1: You are introduced to Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist and viewpoint of the story. In this chapter, you also meet her little sister Primrose, or Prim for short. Katniss has a strong bond with her sister and wants to protect her. Later in this chapter, you learn that Katniss Everdeen lives in one of 12 districts in her futuristic society, District 12. District 12 supplies their society of Panem with coal, and is one of the poorest districts. (The riches and ignorance heightens with each district.) To survive the endless hunger of her district, Katniss illegally hunts outside the electric fence border of their district with her hunting partner, Gale. Here, you learn of Katniss's talent with the bow and arrow. You also learn more of Katniss's family: How her mother, a healer, fell in love with her father who mined coal in the mines. But, after her father's death due to a mine explosion, Katniss's mother fell into a pit of despair and neglected her children. Katniss learned how to take care of her and her sister though but grew a sense of hate for her mother. Later, the two hunting friends take their "game" to the black market of District 12: The Hob. They also drop off a bucket of strawberries to the Mayor's house where they run into the mayor's daughter, Madge. Once Katniss and Gale are done selling their game, they return home to prepare for the Reaping. Katniss and her little sister Prim, dressed up for the Reaping. We later learn that the Reaping is the ceremony where 2 "tributes" (one male and one female) between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen to participate in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is an annual competition where a total of 24 tributes must fight to the death in an arena. The tributes are chosen lottery-style. At the Reaping, we learn how the Hunger Games was created: How a country called Panem rose from the ashes of what was North America after the world flooded. Panem was originally made up of 13 Districts, but was later reduced to 12.
    As we read on through this chapter, we fear for Katniss and her name being pulled from the glass jar filled with other female names at the Reaping. Effie Trinket, the district’s escort chooses a name from the jar to choose the female tribute to fight to the death in the 74th annual Hunger Games:
