As Brad Bird begins to promote the release of his first live-action film, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” fans of his work in animation wonder if he’s ever coming back as a animation director — especially to make the one animation film that fans have been waiting for him to do, the sequel to “The Incredibles.”

Movies.com had the chance to interview Bird recently and asked the director of “The Incredibles” if there were any plans for him to do a sequel and if he will ever come back to animation. Regarding a possible sequel to “The Incredibles,” Bird said, “I want to...

The Incredibles is a great movie. It might be the best superhero movie, and it is certainly one of the best Pixar efforts. With Pixar making sequels more often now than in the past, naturally questions arise about a follow-up to Brad Bird‘s story of a super-powered family. But we’ve never heard anything that suggests a sequel is likely to happen.

Brad Bird is starting to promote Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, his first live-action movie. While talking about that movie last week, he was asked about a possible Incredibles sequel, and his answer was simple. And you know what? I’m LOVING it. So when Brad Bird, the original director, talked about a possible sequel with the AP, my interest piqued long enough for me to write this post about a — gasp! — CGI kids movie....

Many fans are craving for a movie sequel to the Incredibles, the 2004 CGI animated written and directed by Brad Bird for Pixar. And we are all wondering why we haven't seen Incredibles 2 yet. The first film was an awesome mix of wit and fun, and there is no shadow of a doubt that an Incredibles sequel would perform more than well if it was released.

Before its acquisition by Disney, Pixar was known for its posh policy to ignore sequels, but that policy has since changed. But there is still an entrenched creative culture at Pixar: at its core, Pixar is still a director-driven animation studio. So no sequel can be put into production unless the director of the first film gives the thumbs-up and/or is on board in some sort of creative capacity on that project. So it's more than likely that The Incredibles 2 isn't produced yet because of Director Brad Bird.

Brad Bird, director of the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, told Movies.com that there’s a good reason that there hasn’t been a sequel to The Incredibles, the one film among Pixar’s canon that seems most ripe for a follow-up: he hasn’t been working on one. “To say that I’ve had trouble [coming up with a story] is to say that [a sequel] has been my pursuit,” Bird said in a recent interview interview in Los Angeles, Calif. “I haven’t really been pursuing that.”

Suffice it to say that there are plenty of films that fans demand sequels for which their makers aren’t...
