Chapter 2

After a greeting from my family, I went up to my room and laid the box on my bed. Curious, I opened up the box rather quickly. I started pulling out the contents: A black hooded cloak, a black and rather…body conforming suit, black slip-on boots, black elbow length gloves, 3 sets of daggers, face paint, a mask, and a bizarre liquid in a small vile.

“What the hey…?” I asked no one in particular, glancing over at the stuff. I looked back into the box and noticed more writing on the bottom, in the same golden letters. It read:

“I know what you may be thinking. But trust me, you’ll need these. Quickly, drink the blue liquid. Listen to me when I say this…it’ll change your life forever. For the better or worse? Well…it’ll be up to you.”

Hm…I didn’t know what to do. But against my better judgment, I decided to do what the box told me. I popped the small cork of the vile off and took a swig of the liquid. I felt it run cold down my throat into my stomach. And…I still feel the cold to this day.

T-That…that liquid…the box was right…it had changed my life forever. I still have yet to decide whether for better or worse, though.

I shivered at the cold feeling, but shook it off as nothing…until that night. In the middle of the night, while I was chatting with my boyfriend, Raymond, like I usually do, I starting feeling that cold more than before. I tried to ignore it, but…this time it was easier said than done.

I took a long while to reply to Ray…:

Raymond: Juli?

Juli: Ugh…I’m here…

Raymond: what’s wrong?

Juli: N-nothing…

Raymond: tell me

Juli: It’s just…

Raymond: what?

Juli: Cold…

Raymond:  you ok?

Juli: N-no…I’m sorry, I have to go. I can’t stay on tonight, I’m sorry, love…

Raymond: wait!

I didn’t wait…I couldn’t. I unplugged my laptop and set it aside. I sat up, breathing hard. I got up and flipped on the lights. I stumbled over to my mirror…wish I didn’t. I just made it so I could see what was happening to me.

My eyes started to become more animal like. The pupils slowly changed from round to a slit; the dark chocolate color of my irises was replaced by a blood red. My teeth all because pointed and sharp, so sharp in fact, I pricked my tongue from a simple touch. My lips became a blood red color. My ears became pointed, like an elf’s. My darkest brown and dull red hair became wavy and felt as is a gallon of hairspray was sprayed into it. The color became more vibrant, as if it was freshly dyed. My skin became incredibly soft and silky, which was about the only thing I liked at that point. My nails became like claws, but had no other change. The most radical change would be…the wings. I screamed in pain, white hot pain exploded from between my shoulder blades. Two blood red dragon-like wings sprout out; this brought up some blood…oh God, the blood…my blood…it wasn’t the normal dark red as it usually would. Instead…it was dark blue. I instantly remembered the liquid. That accursed liquid…

My transformation seemed to have been completed, as the cold was now gone. I panted, just staring at my new self, both awestruck and terrified. The room was as silent as a graveyard…until my phone rang to life. I jumped, as the phone snapped me out of my thoughts. I ran towards it and grabbed it quickly. It was Raymond calling me. I pressed the button and slowly raised the phone up to my ear.

“H-H-Hello…” I managed to squeeze out.

“Uh…Juli…? You sound weird, are you okay??” Raymond asked, worry filling his voice.

“W-What do you…” I trailed off, realizing what Ray meant. My voice…it sounded different. It sounded…deeper. Deep enough to make me sound older, but not deep enough that you can’t tell it’s obviously a woman’s voice.

“Um…Ray…I’m gonna have to call you back…” I said quickly, about to press the “end call” button.

“NO WAIT!!!!” I heard him yell just before I could touch the button.

“What…? I asked.

“Tell me what’s wrong! I’m really worried about you!” he exclaimed, panic rising in his voice.

“I…I can’t tell you…” I said softly.

“I’m serious, Juli. Please tell me.” He said in a gravely serious tone.

“Very well…g-get on Skype. It’ll be easier to explain there.” I sighed, not wanting to fight.

“Why on Skype? Why not on the phone?” He asked, confused.

“Just…get on please! I’ll call there…” I said, and then hung up.

I jumped onto my bed and grabbed my laptop, plugged it in, and turned it on. Grabbing the webcam I borrowed from my uncle for a school project, I started to become nervous. What if Ray sees me and freaks out? I mean…look at me! I look like something that came out of a monster movie! I gulped, and plugged in the webcam. The Windows start up chime played rather loudly, and I thanked the Lord that I had my headphones plugged in, so no one else could hear it. I put on my headphones and launched Skype. I signed in and went to contacts. I stared at Raymond’s name…that is until I got a call from him. I sucked in my breath and picked up.

I didn’t turn on the camera…not yet anyway. I saw Raymond on my screen, fixing his hair that was covering his eyes, like usual. From what I can tell, he was looking at the screen with a frown.

“I can’t see you”, he said “Turn it on; I wanna see your pretty face!” He smiled slightly.

I sighed and replied, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you…” I said, slowly moving my finger on the track pad to the camera icon. I sucked in my breath again, and turned on the camera...
